Re: Speed test comparison between Google Pixel and iPhone 7+

I’m not sure the phone is built to work anywhere in the world. Verizon is the
only US carrier that sells it in their stores but places like Best Buy in the
US carry it. I think it’s for global consumption.

Re: Mirai-based DDoS attack highlights benefits of Apple's secure HomeKit platform

2016-10-22 Thread Scott Granados
Now that’s interesting. That’s a pretty heavy duty technical article but it
makes me wonder about some of these home devices. I never looked in to the
home kit stuff that much. I’m a lot more likely to now knowing that level of
security is involved. With advanced features like that I can see why the
Government hates Apple.:) A 3072 bit key is 3 times the required bits for
military cyphers. You could probably get DOD certification on a system like
that. Wow!

Re: Dropbox behaving, not at all

2016-10-22 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Hi,

I got the issue solved, it was my darn ISP that for some reason throttled the
hell out of anything to do with DropBox. I connected my Mac to the iPad threw
personal hotspot and got all my stuff where I wanted it.

Warm regards,

Brandt Steenkamp

Yes, it will, so you probably don't wanna go that route for privacy sake.

Oh, crap! I didn't wanna have you hear me in the bathroom farting away when
you called. LOL! I'm just kidding with ya, Chris, but you get the point.

straight away? Not like what a typical answering machine will do?

Re: Answering calls on Skype?

2016-10-22 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Depends. Are we speaking of iOS, or OSX.

If the ladder, then make sure you're focused with Skype's incoming call
window in the foreground, then, command+Shift+R to answer, and again,
provided you're in the foreground with Skype, Command+Shift+H to hang up.

  Hi List,

I just received my iPhone 7+ 2 days ago and used the battery upp
completely before charging it last night.

Now when I got up this morning and unplugged it from ac power the phone
felt very warm and I could not unlock it with the pin code or get it to turn vo
off / on

I started getting a bit concerned that things might be wrong but finally
foud the instructions on how to reboot the iPhone 7 range, power and volume
down,
This seemed to correct issues I was having with pin input and fingerprint
scanning

The charging seemed to really screw up the input.

H has anyone else noticed this sort of behaviour with their phones
especially the device heating up when charging
Warm enough for me to feel it through the leather wallet case it was in,
I never felt this with my 6s+ or previous 6 etc.

  Cheers for any info.

Subject: charging iPhone 7+ issues

Warm enough for me to feel it through the leather wallet case it was in, I
never felt this with my 6s+ or previous 6 etc.

Cheers for any info.

Scheduling a video to be published on youtube with voiceover (Video inside)

2016-10-22 Thread Michael Babcock
In this video i just published 2 hours ago, i walk you threw the process of
Scheduling a video on youtube with voiceover to be published. The only add on
that I want to add to this video is you can only select for the time the
section of the video to be posted at the top of the hour, or the half hour. So
for example you could only schedule a video to be posted at 12 AM,, or 12:30
AM… but you do have all 24 hours to choose from.

I only mention this because I forgot to explain that better in the video,
however here's the video and hopefully it helps someone…

Pressing VO m does nothing at times, and makes radium busy at other times. This

Re: Is there any way to unlink contacts?

2016-10-22 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Tim,

Thanks for the help. Just in case anyone else is following this thread, here
is what I finally did.

when reading Tim's message, I missed one important point, "on your Mac." lol
So, I ended up continuing to fiddle with my phone. I finally figured out that
you can access the Unlink option by selecting the linked contact and using the
rotor. Unlink is one of the choices the rotor brings up.
Cheers,

Mirai-based DDoS attack highlights benefits of Apple's secure HomeKit platform

2016-10-22 Thread Mary Otten
Really worth considering before you get less secure iot devices.

Mirai-based DDoS attack highlights benefits of Apple's secure HomeKit platform
AppleInsider

A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that on Friday severely impacted
internet access for many U.S. web denizens was found to be in part enabled by a
botnet targeting unprotected "Internet of Things" devices. For Apple, the
revelation vindicates a controversial walled garden approach to IoT, borne out
through the encryption HomeKit protocol.

As detailed yesterday, unknown hackers set their sights on Dyn, an internet
management company that provides DNS services to many major web entities.

A series of repeated attacks caused websites including The Verge, Imgur and
Reddit, as well as services like HBO Now, and PayPal, to see slowdowns and
extended downtimes. Follow-up waves played havoc with The New York Times, CNN,
Netflix, Twitter and the PlayStation Network, among many others.

Though Dyn was initially unable to nail down a source, subsequent information
published by security research firm Flashpoint revealed the targeted attacks
involved a strain of the Mirai malware, reports Brian Krebs. Krebs has
firsthand experience with Mirai, as the malware was deployed in a DDoS attack
that brought down his website, KrebsOnSecurity, in September.

Mirai searches the web for IoT devices set up with default admin username and
password combinations, Krebs says. Once discovered, the malware infiltrates and
uses poorly protected hardware to facilitate a DDoS attack on an online entity,
in this case Dyn.

Poor security practices are nothing new. Uninitiated or lazy end users have for
decades left factory default settings untouched on routers, networked printers
and other potential intrusion vectors. But this is different.

DVRs and IP cameras made by Chinese company XiongMai Technologies, as well as
other connected gadgets currently flooding the market, contain a grievous
security vulnerability and are in large part responsible for hosting the
botnet.According to Krebs, DVRs and IP cameras made by Chinese company XiongMai
Technologies, as well as other connected gadgets currently flooding the market,
contain a grievous security vulnerability and are in large part responsible for
hosting the botnet. As he explains, a portion of these devices can be reached
via Telnet and SSH even after a user changes the default username and password.

"The issue with these particular devices is that a user cannot feasibly change
this password," said Zach Wikholm, research developer at Flashpoint. "The
password is hardcoded into the firmware, and the tools necessary to disable it
are not present. Even worse, the web interface is not aware that these
credentials even exist."

To prevent another Mirai attack, or a similar assault harnessing IoT hardware,
offending devices might require a recall, Krebs says. Short of a that,
unplugging an affected product is an effective stopgap.

By contrast, Apple's HomeKit features built-in end-to-end encryption, protected
wireless chip standards, remote access obfuscation and other security measures
designed to thwart hacks. Needless to say, it would be relatively difficult to
turn a HomeKit MFi device in a DDoS zombie.

Announced in 2014 alongside iOS 8, HomeKit debuted as a secure framework onto
which manufacturers of smart home products can build. Specifically, the system
uses iOS and iCloud infrastructure to securely synchronize data between host
devices and accessories.

Apple details HomeKit protections in a security document posted to its website
(PDF link), saying the system is based on public-private key pairs.

First, key pairs are generated on an iOS device and assigned to each HomeKit
user. The unique HomeKit identity is stored in Keychain and synchronized to
other devices via iCloud Keychain. Compatible accessories generate their own
key pair for communicating with linked iOS devices. Importantly, accessories
will generate new key pairs when restored to factory settings.

Apple uses the Secure Remote Password (3,072-bit) protocol to establish a link
between an iOS device and a HomeKit accessory via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. On first
use, keys are exchanged through a procedure that involves entering an 8-digit
code provided by the manufacturer into a host iPhone or iPad. Finally,
exchanged data is encrypted while the system verifies the accessory's MFi
certification.

When an iPhone communicates with a HomeKit accessory, the two devices
authenticate each other using the exchanged keys, Station-to-Station protocol
and per-session encryption. Further, Apple painstakingly designed a remote
control feature called iCloud Remote that allows users to access their
accessories when not at home.

Accessories that support iCloud remote access are provisioned during the
accessory's setup process. The provisioning process begins with the user
signing in to iCloud. Next, the iOS device

Cheers! So, if I check the automatic answer checkbox, will it, like, answer
straight away? Not like what a typical answering machine will do?

Re: 1Password Update

2016-10-22 Thread christopher hallsworth
It will be in either your application chooser or window chooser menu, accessed
with VO-f1-f1 and VO-f2-f2 respectively. You should see “popover”. Press return
on that, and it should have keyboard focus.

Re: How To Increase the speed of a youtube video using safari and OS X (Video inside)

2016-10-22 Thread Michael Babcock
Thanks for your kind words…

I'll try to explain this in more detail!

When I'm recording videos on my Macintosh computer, I use an application I
purchased for US$99 called screen flow. This will allow me to record the camera
from my computer, the screen from my computer, VoiceOver from my computer, and
my voice. I can also record in any combination of the four mentioned recording
abilities. So for example I could record just my screen and voiceover, or my
screen, my voice, and voiceover, or maybe just my voice and my camera…

Regarding videos on my iPhone, I use the Camera application that comes natively
installed on iOS. I find the camera mode selector, flick to video, make sure
the proper camera is selected rear facing or front facing, then press either
one of the volume keys to start recording. Press either one of the volume keys
to stop recording.
Let me know if any more clarification is necessary.

Hope you're doing amazing

Well, USB-C will replace the magsafe power adaptor as USB-C is powerful enough

Re: Braille Navigation annoyances

2016-10-22 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I think it's important to have all the text shown in it's bold or italicised
and so on as only then one would know how the written word is on paper or
digitally. A good braille transcriber will do this for all users who use
Braille.

That is the only good thing with Jaws, you get flawless braille. May be it
will happen on the Mac if we all wrote to Apple and said that we wanted better
braille support.

Hi Michael.

Please explain to me further what you mean re your message below as I don't
understand. If need be, you can write to me off list as you did yesterday.

As I said, you were very kind to send me my answers off list. Also, I really
liked your podcast as it was rather like another person I know who does to the
point podcasts. Yours was straight to the point which was brilliant.

Thanks again and I look forward to your replies when ever you wish to reply, no
rush.

I did not expect a message from you so again, thank you very very much.

Re: Alternative radio apps for the mac?

2016-10-22 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
I was surprised to read about this problem with Radium. I have Sierra on my
Mac. And I have used Radium successfully recently. I do have an alias for
radium on my desktop. Maybe that's why it still works for me.

Re: Is there any way to unlink contacts?

2016-10-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In the Contacts app on your Mac, make sure All Contacts, or All iCloud, is
selected from the Groups table, then go to the card that is now linked. press
cmd-l to Edit or press on the Edit button. Interact with the Scroll area and
just to the VO-left of the Notes field, you'll find the references to the
linked cards. So, for example, if you linked the FaceBook card and your iCloud
card, you'll see entries for both, along with Remove buttons. Press on the
Remove FaceBook button from this area and it should unlink the FaceBook card
from your iCloud card without removing either from your contacts.

HTH.

Re: Braille Navigation annoyances

2016-10-22 Thread Devin Prater
The main thing I miss on Mac that is in NVDA's braille support on
Windows is formatting information being shown. This includes italicized
or bolded text in HTML documents. I haven't been able to try Chrome's
braille support, so I don't know if it supports the showing of
formatting information, but neither Mac nor iOS show this at all, mainly
putting the differently formatted text in a different element than the
rest, which can get annoying in things like Bible apps, where sometimes
even lone words are italicized. NVDA just shows the text as italicized
in braille and moves on, as any good braille transcriber would.

Yeah I could have done with my lighteing to 3.5 mm jack adaptor this morning,
almost tried to plug a line in cable into my ipHone 7+, yeah that wasn’t going
to work…

However I still want to know how I plug my lightening connector headphones in

Or other audio device I need to plug headphones into

Has anyone heard of any company developing a lightening to 3.5 mm headphone

1. How will OLD light function strip work with VoiceOver?
2. I look forward to USB-C, as I've got many of these cables, including 65-watt
adapter for various surfaces already.
3. Hope they'll have 32GB or 64GB ram options for MacBook. this MBP with 16B
RAM is a huge boost over MBA 8GB RAM--I wish I made the jump years ago.
4. lightning to 3.5mm adapter is ~1" in between either end, but I've only used
it a couple of times the first day to see how it worked, but I've never used it
since then.
5. I've mostly used the lightning EarPods or Bluetooth headset, but look
forward to the AirPods.
6. I love the iPhone 7 with stereo speakers and VoiceOver!

Alternative radio apps for the mac?

2016-10-22 Thread christopher hallsworth
So now we’ve discovered a possible critical bug in the latest Radium for mac
where the menu bar cannot be invoked with VO-m and instead closes it, are there
any alternatives besides My Tuner Radio? Asking as have tried this, and I think
for someone new to the mac, expecting them to route the mouse pointer to the VO
cursor and clicking it is all too much for them at this stage. At least that’s
been my experience when opening My Tuner Radio from the menu extras. Thanks for
any offers.
