Re: Saving a document under many folders, and input short cut

2016-10-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello,

The command to change your input source can be changed in System Preferences,
Keyboard, Shortcuts. Select Input Sources in the first table, then go to the
next table and change the shortcuts.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Braille Navigation annoyances

2016-10-24 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Hi there Christopher,

Most people, when reading standard 6 dot Braille, use their fingertips to do
so. years of experience have taught me that the easiest way to read 8 dot
Braille is to use the flat part of your finger, just behind the tip.

Yes, it is rather awkward in the beginning, but a little bit of practice does
help.

Warm regards,

Brandt Steenkamp

What I! wanna know is, how! can one stress test a Macintosh based computer,
regardless the model. I got one over here who's battery might be on the way out

this point, but that said, I don't wanna over! stress it. I wanna put it to
it's absolute limit, but I want to do so without pushing it past that one

Just a quick question, if you over heat the MacBook Pro, will it shut it self
down like some of the other laptops out there?

I know my old HP ProBook 4510S use to do so whenever it got to hot.

Re: Braille Navigation annoyances

2016-10-24 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I don't think I'd really mind UEB per sé, and face it, like it or not, we may
as well get used to it, as it's not going anywhere. I didn't say it's pretty,
don't get me wrong, but yeah.

Now, again, we're really! veering off topic from mac related things, so I'm
gonna therefore ask that this only be answered off list, as I don't wanna
generate unneeded traffic here on list, but can someone off list explain to me
the concept of grade 3 braille? I hear it's basically more a very contracted
shorthand kind a thing. Like... you're never really going to see it in official
writing. I hear it's more for things like notetaking. Would I be correct on
this theory?

I cannot state my hate for UEB strongly enough. In South Africa it is called
UBC, for unified Braille code, instead of Unified English Braille. All 11
official languages in this country was hit by this cluster f*** of a system.
Let me rather shut up now.

I only prefer dots 7 8 for the blinking cursor. I don't even like it to

reader. I mean, I'm decent, but definitely am not where I should be! It takes
me about 5 minutes to read an entire 8X11 sheet of braille paper single spaced
if that tells you anything.

I suppose dot 7 8 braille is something I could get used to, but right now, my
finters just are not sensitive enough, and it feels like the dots 7 and 8 run
into the rest of the braille cell making it very very confusing for me to make
out each character. If anyone knows a specific exercize when practicing that
may help me with this, I'd love off list to know! I have a very open mind to
trying getting used to 7 8 braille, as it really can tell you so much on a
braille display. I just don't know what it's gonna take to build the
sensitivity up for me to be able to suffer through it, until finally it become
second nature, and no longer be a painful task.

I know it's just practice practice practice, but if there specifically are any
little games or exercizes I can do by myself that may help, I'd love to know.

Anyway, so, yeah, that's my thoughts on dot 7 8, for what it's worth.

Re: VMware with MacBook 2015

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
Hi there, one thing you can do is make sure you have enough cores dedicated.
On a 13 inch MacBook pro I’d probably go 4 GB for the VM and at least 2 cores
for the CPU. Remember it’s 2 cores in software per every real core do to hyper
threading. If you have the I5 processor then you have 2 cores so you could
bump up to 4 but it will impact the Mac side. It’s a nice little power house
though so you should be fine. Also wait a minute after windows boots as the
boot process is a real drain on resources.

As for voice over, you can use the VM with VO engaged but I find it works
better with VO off and just activate it when you need it.

Good luck.

Re: Switching iPhone carriers from AT to Verizon

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
So for you what you want is an unlocked iPhone 7 / 7+. You need one with the
Qualcomm modem which I understand the unlocked versions are. You can’t use a
GSM model only with Sprint as Sprint’s outdated network still uses CDMA for the
voice channel and to fill in where there’s no LTE which is large parts of the
country.

If you get the correct iPhone then yes, it’s literally as easy as swapping SIM
cards. You can definitely try out what ever carrier you want and then if you
like put in your old SIM and reactivate your Sprint service by using the old
SIM (reactivate is the wrong word just connect to that’s a better way to put
it).

Switch the SIMs and switch networks, literally that easy. Something the
Europeans have been doing for more than a decade before us.:)

Give T-Mobile a shot. It’s years ahead of Sprint in terms of coverage, speed
and features.

Hi Phil, with a 6S+, as long as the phone is unlocked, you can port it to
where ever you wish. This is not the case with the 7 as Apple went through
unifying the hardware on the 6 / 6s series but started using different modems
again with the 7 / 7+.

However insure the phone is unlocked.

Also, Verizon may not be the way to go. As much as I’d love for you to use
my handiwork and there’s a lot of that in the Verizon Wireless network it’s not
the best network any more. It has fallen in to second place behind T-Mobile in
terms of network speed, features and call stability. With voice over LTE using
extended services signaling for example your calls go through faster and more
reliably on T-Mobile not to mention the new encoding schemes which the 6S can
take advantage of some of these features. T-Mobile also has a more developed
WiFi calling feature and is a lot more cost effective under normal conditions.
(***note*** on Verizon you can threaten to cancel and if you get the right rep
get an unlimited plan for $50 but it’s not offered as a matter of course)

If I were you I’d get a test SIM from Verizon and one from T-Mobile and try
each for the allowed 14 day period and pick the one that works best for you.

AT and Sprint are both years behind T-Mobile and VZ so either way, you’ll
be happier.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I haven’t noticed anything sideways with the new release. I am noticing for
example the unlock with watch feature is far more reliable and some small

I don’t recall the post off hand to comment on the specific issue.

Thanks

Anything new, good or bad, related to voiceover in the new update for Sierra

2016-10-24 Thread Mary Otten
On one of these two lists, and I don't remember which one, there was a cryptic
comment not too long ago from someone saying that they were unhappy with
something about the Sierra beta, which is now the official Sierra update.
Because they were running a beta, they didn't want to comment on what the thing
was that they didn't like that had to do with excess ability. I haven't
installed the update yet, and I'm curious what people have noticed, good or bad
who have installed the latest update.

Re: Stress testing the MacBook Pro

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
Hi there, all Intel chips I’m aware of have such a cutoff. In fact all modern
microprocessors I’m aware of have this feature. Certainly an I5 will be fine
and if anything less warm than an I7 do to the power requirements.

You should be good to go.

Re: Switching iPhone carriers from AT to Verizon

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Phil, with a 6S+, as long as the phone is unlocked, you can port it to where
ever you wish. This is not the case with the 7 as Apple went through unifying
the hardware on the 6 / 6s series but started using different modems again
with the 7 / 7+.

However insure the phone is unlocked.

Also, Verizon may not be the way to go. As much as I’d love for you to use my
handiwork and there’s a lot of that in the Verizon Wireless network it’s not
the best network any more.

AT and Sprint are both years behind T-Mobile and VZ so either way, you’ll be
happier.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

There is a thermal cutoff built in to the I7 as well as one on the battery.
You should be good to go. Just remember that MacBook 15 tends to get very
toasty. I brought it up to 16 virtual machines the other day each dedicated
with a core and between 256 and 512 MB and the fan never shut off but it ran
nicely all be it burned through that battery awful fast.

You should be good to go and the thermal cutoffs will save your bacon or your

Re: Braille Navigation annoyances

Hi there,

I cannot state my hate for UEB strongly enough. In South Africa it is called
UBC, for unified Braille code, instead of Unified English Braille. All 11
official languages in this country was hit by this cluster f*** of a system.
Let me rather shut up now.

Hope you all have a grate day.

Switching iPhone carriers from AT to Verizon

2016-10-24 Thread Phil Halton
Here's a question for the techies on the list. I have an I phone 6S plus that I
purchased through the Apple store, and with AT as a carrier, and I'm thinking
about switching to Verizon wireless. Can IPort this phone over to Verizon,
or is the whole GSM/CDMA thing still happening?

Re: Braille Navigation annoyances

2016-10-24 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Folks, since my braille reading is still way too slow, I only use Braille
devices to verify if they behave with our web content. My understanding is
that JAWS uses dots 7/8 to indicate text attributes but that UEB braille
has in line 6 dot ways of indicating these attributes. What are people's
preferences on this? Also, if UEB text attribution indicators are used do
folks only use the dots 7 and 8 for cursor location?

Re: T-Mobile carrier update available

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Mary, this is for all customers not just the beta as it was sent over the
air, not as part of the download package.

Daniel, as for whether it’s for the iPhone 6, I am not sure of that. Most
carriers unify their iPhone releases but with the fractured state of modems on
GSM networks now I am not sure. I am using an iPhone 7+ for reference.

Thank you

T-Mobile carrier update available

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
For folks using an iPhone on T-Mobile, a carrier update was pushed today.

The number is 26.1. Causing an update is easy. Open settings, general and hit
about. If an update is available you’ll be prompted to install, hit OK and
wait about 30 seconds. Your cellular settings will reset. To check your
carrier settings version use the about screen and flick over to carrier
version, insure it’s 26.1.

Good luck

Still cannot delete mail messages

2016-10-24 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I’m frustrated over here. I am still unable to delete messages like I
always use to be. They just keep reappearing.

What I have just tried and it seems to work is select all the messages I want
to delete, then go through the sub menus and move to trash. The messages
finally left the current mailbox. I am not sure this is the behavior I really
want though.

Any further advice or tips?

Thanks,
Traci

Re: iCloud Documents and Data that are hidden

2016-10-24 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I suspect that they're hidden so that we don't mess things up by accident. It
is possible to see these files via the Terminal as well as creating an alias
for the Mobile Documents folder on your Desktop. Be careful though when it
comes to deleting as this is a shared space. That is, iCloud Drive is shared
between all your Macs and iDevices. Therefore, if you remove it from the
iCloud Drive on your Mac, it is also removing access to it for any iDevices
that depend on that data.

In the future, iCloud Drive may become more granular, similar to Google Drive,
where you can configure what's placed locally vs what's left in the Cloud, but
it's not there yet.

Later...

Hi all,

I’m wondering if anyone knows a way to see (and possibly delete) “hidden”
iCloud data that doesn’t show up in the user interface. It would be great if
one had the option of “starting over” so to speak.

For example, I think iCloud stores containers for every app I’ve ever
installed, some of which aren’t visible in iCloud’s “manage storage” settings
or in iCloud Drive on a Mac or PC. However, I can see traces of them here and
there.

To give just one example, if I do a spotlight search on my Mac, I can see a
folder under ~/Library/Mobile Documents/SE69VQ73SR~com~mipsoft~blindsquare.
Presumably this is the container for the BlindSquare iOS app which would have
my database of favourite points of interest and other settings. And, presumably
the reason this is showing up on my Mac is because the Mac stores everything in
my iCloud account.

Now, I definitely wouldn’t want to erase that particular container and I’m glad
it’s there, but the point is I’d love to be able to view all the data stored in
my account and have the option of deleting some of it. I’m not a developer, but
I think developers have the option of hiding their ubiquity containers if they
so choose.

What do you think?

Cheers,

Grant

Re: ogg files in latest itunes on osx siera?

2016-10-24 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Deedra:

You can play any of the Ziph/Vorbis codecs, opus, flac, ogg, etc., using
either mplayer or vlc.

Yes, Apple is, and has always been, quite allergic to these open source
codecs, but I suspect this is one battle they do not win.

I've found vlc quite accessible on my Airbook. Mplayer works perfectly
from the command line on Mac, though we know how compelling the Mac
terminal isn't!

If memory serves, the mplayer build for Mac is Source Forge, and there's
an extended version at:

http://mplayerosx.ch

VLC is available from http://videolan.org

what in the world is up with all these crazy Safari menus

2016-10-24 Thread Ray Foret jr
Okay,

Using the latest version of Safari and I noticed that every single time I open
a web page, I get all kinds of crazy pop up menus which don’t seem to last
long enough for me to try to understand what in the name of sanity they are
supposed to be for. Anybody got any idea wha all this is about and how I can
just shut these off or else learn to manipulate them? Somehow, these menus
seem in some way to be linked to address bar but can’t ever be sure.

Thanks.

Re: IOS version

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
Hi, going to the beta will not erase your content and settings.

What you’ll find with the Beta is it runs a lot smoother than the production
version, not many other differences. The stability is worth it, especially on
beta 5.

A way to play chess online

2016-10-24 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Hi there folks,

I use to play on the FICS chess server using Winboard in Windows, that is, when
I still had a dedicated Windows computer; something I do not gaqve any more. Is
there a way to do so in macOS? I tried using telnet, but that is not a
practical solution for various reasons. among others, voiceover reacting to
slow in time sensitive situations, such as blitz or lightning games.

If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.

Warm regards,

Brandt Steenkamp

but can I find it? Can I heck. I did see it in standard view though. Cheers for

Re: IOS team Viewer

2016-10-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Simon,

You have to get the password from the slave machine before a connexion can be
established.
We use TeamViewer for distance training. The ID always remains the same, but
the password changes for each connexion.
A session is limited to three hours.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: IOS team Viewer

2016-10-24 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Anne,

So your saying that team viewer for the mac will allow me to connect to my mac
mini at work from my MBA and let me start up VO on the mini and run it from
the team viewer connection?

Giving me the ability to do what I can do from my windows machine to my servers
using Jaws!

Thanks Anne,

Great I’ll give that a go and see what happens,

Wish we could do remote access from IOS devices such as my iPad or iPhone.
