2019-09-01 Thread Barry Hadder
Well, I have to correct myself.
Anne was correct in that the keystroke in the DefaultKeyBinding.dict file to
place a mark is control-space. I have just tried it and I can confirm that it
still works.

Hi, I'm not Jonathan, but the answer to your question is yes, it works.
Just make sure after pressing vo-return, not to stop pressing vo, then you
can errow to select as much as you want.

You can sorta do this if the text is in a block, but if there is graphics
or tables or even perhaps font changes I find the below method does not
 work.

 1. Go to starting text and interact until it says interacting with text.
 2. Press VO-return. VO says start selecting.
 3. Move to where you want to end the selection while moving VO will make a
dragging type of sound. and press vo-return again. VO should say stop
 selecting.

Now perform what ever actions you need on the selection. The good thing
about this, is if you somehow break the selection, the sound will stop.

 Best wishes,

Re: Copying text from a web site

2019-09-01 Thread Barry Hadder

First, you need to create a folder in your Library folder called
KeyBindings if you don’t already have one.

Second, the key stroke to set a mark is actually control-@ as defined in
the dict file. Note however that you can change it to whatever you would
prefer.

I also want to note that the keystroke vo-enter that Jonathan mentioned is
correct. However it seems to be dead in the current version of Mojave. It
is working in Catalina developer beta 6 however.

Re: Moving Quickly from Cells Populated w/ Data in Numbers

2019-09-01 Thread Dave Carlson
Nicholas,
Very interesting, indeed, and I’m surprised to realize that I understand the
concept of what you suggest. I create my own spreadsheets with data that I
collect from Credit Cards, Banks, etc. and after accumulating a year’s worth of
data, I start the arduous task of assigning a relevant category to each
transaction.
This is all for doing my taxes, which so far I can still benefit from itemized
deductions.
So of course I do a lot of sorting on columns, and after assigning categories,
do a final sort and then do a sum of values for each of the categories.
So with your idea of filters, how would I insert a cell entry if I’ve skipped
over it due to the filters? Do I need to first work without any filters, until
I’ve finished editing, and then use the filters to quickly move to cells with
meaningful data?
Hope this makes sense.

there's an unzip utility on the Mac already. as long as it's zip and not rar or

to delete the zip file manually after you have opened it.

opening zip files

2019-09-01 Thread Hemachandran Karaha
Hi all,

How do we open zip files on a Mac? Do we need a special utility for doing
it? Kindly let me know the steps.

Take care,

Hem.

Re: Moving Quickly from Cells Populated w/ Data in Numbers

2019-09-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I use Numbers heavily and I do not know of any command like the one you seek,
but I may have a work around.

But, given the differences between Numbers and Excel, such a command should
not be needed with Numbers on the Mac.

As you probably know, each sheet with Excel is a giant never-ending grid.
Sighted people enter data in arbitrary locations to make the layout more
visually appealing. For instance, the first few rows and columns may be left
blank to provide a margin, and different kinds of data may be grouped together
in different places on the grid. This makes navigating with a screen reader
difficult as, when you come to a blank row, you don’t know whether there is
more data if you scroll down or not. So without the commands you speak of, you
could be left hitting the down arrow indefinitely just in case the next row had
data.

But in Numbers, each sheet can hold multiple table objects. Each table object
can be visually arranged anywhere on the blank sheet canvas. So there is no
need for a table object to have blank rows or columns to create space; instead,
the table objects can be positioned to leave space between them. Moreover, each
table object can have designated header rows and header columns so again no
need to leave blank rows to separate data rows from header rows. And each table
object should contain only related data, with different unrelated data being
placed into its own table object. That way again it’s not necessary to use
blank rows/columns to separate and group data; you can use separate table
objects to do so. Navigating table objects with VoiceOver in Numbers is easy,
so I find this method much more accessible for screen reader users.

Now, with that said, if you wanted to ignore blank cells in a table, you could
use the filter options to filter the table to show only cells that are not
blank, or that have values greater than 0, for instance. There are a number of
ways to do that but one way is to select the organise radio button from the
toolbar, then navigate to the table you’re interested in, then use VO-j to jump
to the format inspector, then select the filter tab/radio button, and then
interact with the scroll area and add a filter. Once the filter is set, you can
then navigate within the table using only the arrow keys to navigate only the
displayed cells. If you use VO + arrow keys you will navigate to all cells
regardless of whether they are displayed or hidden (i.e. ignoring the filter
rules). If you do that (navigate with the VO keys), and you end up on a hidden
cell, then the arrow keys probably won’t work until you navigate back to a
displayed cell using the VO + arrow keys.

Simon,
Yes, I know I need to find other ways, but I used that set of commands a lot
with JAWS to speed up the whole process of navigating, as well as
copying/pasting large amounts of data. Tax time is approaching, and I need to
start looking at all the data from our bank accounts and organize the
transactions into the various types for itemized deductions.
More on Taxes in a separate message, btw.

Re: Sound effects in the mail app

2019-09-01 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Hi,
Try adding your new email sound,
But if it doesn’t work, follow the below instructions on disabling the security
feature.

If you are using High Sierra or Mojave,
There is a security feature you must disable first.
To do this, Boot into recovery mode,
by pressing command+R at boot up.
Wait awhile and press command+F5 to start Voice Over.
Now go to Terminal and paste in this command and press enter
csrutil disable
OK, you can restart the mac, make your changes and come back to recovery mode
and reenable the feature by pasting the following in terminal:
csrutil enable

First you have to find the sound folder.
While on the Desktop, go to the go Menu.
While pressing the VO keys, press the down arrow to Library.
press VO+Space to choose it.
Now open Library and choose Sounds.
This folder may be empty.
Paste your new mail sound here.
It may need to be in the .aiff format, but I’m not sure. It is what I’m using.

Here is how to change the empty trash and move to trash sounds:

, use your Finder and click through to:
Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> Components
When you get there, find CoreAudio.component in the list and VO Space on it.
Then click Show Package Contents.
Then go to:
Shared Support -> System Sounds
The drag-to-trash audio file can be found in dock.
The empty-trash audio file can be found in finder.
You can rename the origional file instead of deleteing it.
Now paste in your new files with the same name as the original ones.

Actually Marie, I was referring not to the QuickStart tutorial, but to the
getting started guide. That’s a much more in-depth tutorial it’s an actual book
of chapters devoted to various functions of voiceover. It’s the bottom most
entry in the help system just below the QuickStart tutorial. It also has
appendices for various keystrokes and functions etc. Good luck.

Marie, don’t forget to plow through the getting started guide. You can find
it by pressing the help menu keys VO plus h. The getting started guide is down
at the bottom of the list. You might find some trouble in browsing at first,
but try to bring up the table of contents and you’ll find a wealth of
information about using voiceover on the Mac. Also check out the other items in
the voiceover help menu while you’re at it. I think you’ll find all you need
there along with questions on list you should learn quite quickly.

  Marie,

You heard from John already. I recommend you visit his web site at
macfortheblind.com and look at his audio tutorials. Many are cost-based, but
there are about a half dozen basic tutorials that are free, and are very well
done. I learned a lot from John’s tutorials, and also from those done by David
Woodbridge on appleviz.com (did I spell that one right?).

I did a lot of listening and struggling in my first 3 or 4 months using
the Mac, but am becoming more comfortable with the Sox approach.

I made it a point to become familiar first with the Mail and Textedit
apps, and then spent a whole lot of time learning how to get around in Finder.
Calendar and Contacts were a bit more difficult to use, and I’m still not
comfortable with Contacts.

Other places you should spend time poking around would be in the
Voiceover Utility and System Preferences.

And of course post your questions to this list. There are some real
experts on board.

below method does not work.
1. Go to starting text and interact until it says interacting

2. Press VO-return. VO says start selecting.
3. Move to where you want to end the selection while moving VO
will make a dragging type of sound.  and press vo-return

Now perform what ever actions you need on the selection. The
good thing about this, is if you somehow break the selection,

Hello Anne,

First of all, Thank you very much for your help, this seems to be a
wonderful solution; however, for some reason that I still cannot
understand, it didn't work for me. I followed your instructions and
pasted the resulting folder inside the library folder of my user, but
still, the keystrokes don't respond, and I have even tried this in
combination with the function key with no luck. Besides, I've been doing
some research on Google, but I can't find anything that could lead me to
respond why the keystrokes are not responding.

I'm on Mojave latest update. Would anyone know why this happens?

Best,
   Leo.

Hello Dan,

In Pages, for instance, you may wish to select text between two headings. You
can use the rotor to find the first heading and set a hotspot, then use the
rotor again to find the heading where you wish to end the selection and set
another hotspot. Go to the first hotspot and press Ctrl-Space, then go straight
to the second hotspot and press Ctrl-x-x and the text in between will be
selected.
You can’t press VO-Return at the first hotspot, jump to the second and press
VO-Return again and have the intervening text selected.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: New Mac User

2019-09-01 Thread Phil Halton
Actually Marie, I was referring not to the QuickStart tutorial, but to the
getting started guide. That’s a much more in-depth tutorial it’s an actual book
of chapters devoted to various functions of voiceover. It’s the bottom most
entry in the help system just below the QuickStart tutorial. It also has
appendices for various keystrokes and functions etc. Good luck.

Re: Copying text from a web site

2019-09-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Leo,

You can select text between two markers in any text document on the Mac if you
do the following:
Click on this link to download Keybindings.zip
>

In your Downloads folder, open the Keybindings.zip with Cmd-o.
Paste the resulting folder into your user library folder.
You should now be able to mark the start of your selection with Ctrl-Space,
navigate to the place you wish to end your selection and press Ctrl-x-x. The
text in between wil be selected.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Copying text from a web site

2019-09-01 Thread Leo

Hi,

well if you red the question that started this thread, you'll notice
that basically your question and my question are the same. Though I
wanted to copy text from a web page, you want to copy from a text
editor; in addition, as far as we've been told, there is no way to place
two marks in a text and automatically select the text between them.
Since this is the basic concept behind the function that we are looking
for, this probably cannot be done on Mac, neither on a text editor nor
on a web page.

Best,
   Leo.

You can sorta do this if the text is in a block, but if there is
graphics or tables or even perhaps font changes I find the below
method does not work.

1. Go to starting text and interact until it says interacting with
text.

2. Press VO-return. VO says start selecting.

3. Move to where you want to end the selection while moving VO
will make a dragging type of sound.  and press vo-return again. VO
should say   stop selecting.

Now perform what ever actions you need on the selection. The good
thing about this, is if you somehow break the selection, the sound
will stop.

Hi Andrew,

Both methods work perfectly on a web page, and that is something.

Thanks for the feedback.

You could try using shift key and arrow keys to see whether you can
select the text.  If that’s failed, I use copy last phrase to the
clipboard method which copies the last chunk of text Voiceover says by
pressing vo+shift+c.  You don’t have to wait until voiceover finishes
speaking the block of text. As soon as it starts speaking, you can
press this key combination and the chunk of text gets copied to
clipboard and you can then paste it elsewhere.  This is not a tidy way
of doing this but it works if all else fails.  But do try the shift
key down and arrow keys method.  It’s been improved of late by Apple

Thanks for the clarification.

What should I do if I need to select long passages after placing a selection

I need to end selection. Is there a way to place sweet spots and make a text
selection between them? I will be grateful for an answer.
