Re: Recording an emailing

2020-03-15 Thread Brad Snyder
Tim,

I don’t think changing the file extension will damage the file, but it
definitely does not change the file’s format and the file will not work.
I think if one does change a file’s extension, the file extension can be
changed back to the original extension, and all is as it was in the beginning.

Re: Silencing Voice over

2020-03-15 Thread Brad Snyder
Hi Eric,

Your memory is correct. Pressing the CTRL key while VO is speaking will
silence speech, and pressing it again will resume speech.
This has not changed in recent and current versions of the macOS.
Sometimes VO misbehaves and it is necessary to toggle VO off and back on to
correct its behavior.
When silencing speech with the CTRL key, be sure you press and release the CTRL
key and do not continue to hold the CTRL down. This makes it clear what
command you are giving to VO.

In most cases when I press the control key VO just keeps talking and than at

So, for example in mail I may press down arrow to hear a message and then want

Is there another key now to obtain silence and then return to speech?
A little more experimentation is indicating to me that if I turn VO off and on

Are others experiencing the same?

I find I have to toggle VO off and on a lot lately to get it to work correctly.
This happens a lot when editing text in mail.

working. If there is a program that works well just using VoiceOver I would

Re: backblaze and voiceover

2020-03-15 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Robert and others.

I just found I still had this thread in my messages so I wanted to add
that I don’t have experience with Super Duper but if I were starting over I’d
use that app over Carbon Copy Cloner. The reason is the VO support Robert
mentions.

I’ve had good luck with CCC but the developer doesn’t seem to go out of
his way to make sure the app is fully accessible. Recent experience after
upgrading my Mac was that I had to set up CCC again to have full access to my
hard drive. This required dragging a fish icon to the table in the security
settings.

I remember years ago writing to the developer asking for another
solution. He sent me a reply but it was not workable. So, in the end I used
sighted help.

It sounds like Super Duper would not have this issue and likely be easier to
use.

I will say the CCC clone worked perfectly when I needed it, so having a
bootable clone in your back up solution is something I’d recommend.

Re: Group wisdom on upgrading to Catalina?

2020-03-15 Thread Eric Caron
Hi folks,

I did the upgrade and all went well. No longer able to use my 32 bit
version of Microsoft word. But, for my purposes Pages seems to be working out
very nicely and I have Text Edit as well for some things.

I am not sure I want to add more to my learning curve right now with
Windows.

Thanks for the tips and encouragement.

One note. In a earlier thread about back up solutions I mentioned liking
Carbon Copy Cloner. In the process of upgrading I needed again to give Carbon
Copy Cloner some permissions. This was not easy to do. They wanted me to drag
a file into a table. It was a fish icon.

I remember years ago writing to the developer and explaining it was not easy
for a blind person using voice over to do. It has not been changed.

He did send me a way to do it but it was not easy and ended up just having my
sighted partner drag it over.

So, though I have not used Super Duper I’d take the advice given by Robert
Carter and go that route for a application that does Cloning.

I’ll stick to what I have as it is working and paid for but I won’t upgrade it
in the future.

So far, I’m enjoying Catalina.

New I should have waited for the expert to reply, I might keep your email
anyway incase there is something I want from the App store one day. I’ve never
had to purchase anything with it on the Mac yet. The only apps I’ve installed
so far have come directly from web-sites.

You should then get the regular purchase dialogs whether you need to confirm,
whether it comes out of a Store credit etc. Once you confirm, it will start
the download. The app will reside in your Applications folder after the
download is complete. There will also be an Open button within the App Store
after it completes the download.

That is strange. I have always found the Mac AppStore to be accessible using
VoiceOver.
If you find the price, place focus on it and press VO + SHIFT to initiate a
purchase. You will need to repeat this action to confirm that you really want
to make a purchase.

I just check in the Mac AppStore and Just Press Record is there. Of course, I
am using the US AppStore, so it is possible it is not in your AppStore, but if
you found it in your iOS AppStore, I would assume it would be available in your
Mac AppStore as well.
I can’t see the price because I already purchased it, but it is there.

Well I managed to do a small recording with Voice memos on my Mac, but haven’t
worked out how to attach it to an email if one can at all that is? So that
could be an option if it is possible.

Re: Ms teams

2020-03-15 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
When I last used Microsoft Teams on the Mac, it seemed to be accessible, but I
didn't work with it extensively. I've been using it under Windows recently. My
understanding is that it is an Electron application, so the user interface is
the same across multiple operating systems.

When you're in a meeting, there is a "share" button, if I remember correctly. I
haven't tried it, but I suspect it will give you the option to share a file.
Also, if you have a Teams channel set up to which everyone you want has access,
you can share a file there. The Files tab would be the place to look.

Hi,

Basically because of the coronavirus the university has decided to move all
teaching online - given we are a university not geared up for this and are
having to literaerally do it overnight we are having to use what we have access
to and one of these things is teams. So I have managed to set up a team for one
of my courses and I think sent out a meeting request for an online video
session tomorrow - - but I wanted to add a file for the students to use during
the session - how do I do this?

I am finding that if I use my phone it is easier - I can’t quite work out how
things work on the laptop yet - and of course trying to learn quickly is never
great.

Another question I have is if I want to share a ppt with the group whilst using
the meetings function - how do I do this and can I control the ppt whilst in

RE: Coronavirus impact: Apple moves WWDC to online format, citing 'current health situation' | Fox News

2020-03-15 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Anne,

I’m sorry to hear that but yes this is an interesting time and world we are now
living in.

I can not remember ever being in this type of situation before

Mind you at 50 we’ve had things pretty quiet here in NZ during that time.

Hello Simon,

Well, things are much worse here now. All restaurants, bars, cafés, cinemas and
theatres are closed as of midnight last night. Only essential travel is
permitted. However the local elections are going ahead. We are certainly living
in interesting times.
Cheers,

Anne

Hi Anne,

It is that,

I’m currently living in a city where a shooting of 51 people happened a year
ago.

That’s also a pretty weird situation to be remembering
Especially when people are continually looking over their shoulders for
something to happen again.

Hello Simon,

I live in one of the worst affected departments in France and the hospital
where I was recently treated for cancer is where the first local case was
diagnosed. My husband is an independent English teacher and already some of his
classes have been cancelled. It’s a very weird situation to be living through.
Cheers,

Anne

Hi Barry,

Yeah this virus is going to cause some slow downs globlely for a while,

So anything anyone was expecting to purchase this year, chances are you’ll need
to wait a couple of extra months.

New Zealand will be some what restricting international travel in to the
country as of Sunday night and anyone coming in will go in to a somewhat
forced 14 quaruntine / isolation

And I know we’re not the first to do this but it will get worse before it gets
better.
