Ms Word and comments/track changes
I am also interested in this thread. I find 2 problems: 1. Although I can make the comments appear I can not reliably move back and forth between the comment and the exact place in the text to which the comment applies with voiceover. 2. My understanding is that voiceover is supposed to indicate places in a document where there is a track change by saying anotation. I can not get mine to do that. Any help with these two questions would be appreciated. Jean -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list. MS Word and track changes
Hello All: I just started using ms word for mac and I need to be able to read and interact with comments and track changes. The problem is that voiceover is not reading the annotations in the text that indicate where a revision has taken place. Any ideas? Re: system voice irritation
Jonathan: Would that turn on quicktime from anywhere? The problems isn’t really starting play but navigating from zoom to the video player. If quick time or whatever could be started from zoom that would make it possible to turn off voice over thereby eliminating the possibility of the system voice interfering with things. VLC is a bit easier to manage. For whatever reason, the hot keys in Quicktime have never worked correctly for me. How do you keep track of where are? For example, when you share a video and you need to switch apps to get to the video player how do you know where you are if vo is off? Once you are in the app you can use hot keys or whatever. BTW, are you using Big Sur? I am having some issues, not really access-related but still. Anyway thanks for getting back to me on this. using powerpoint with voiceover on Mac
Hello All: I want to show slides using the slide show function in Microsoft Powerpoint. When I am in slide show mode however, the slides do not advance properly when voiceover is on. When voiceover is turned off the slides advance correctly. I have also tried using the space bar for this and also p for previous and n for next with the same result. Sorry but using Windows is not an option. The same slide show works fine with Keynote leading me to conclude that it is a powerpoint/voiceover issue. Is this a bug? Any suggestions Many thanks in advance for any help, Jean ? Hello All: Thank you for the responses to my question but I am still having trouble with choosing the disk drive to back up. In the settings of Backblaze you can choose which disk drives to back up. When I interact with the table where they are listed, I get an error message saying that I can’t exclude my computer hard drive. No other parts of this table appear to be accessible. When I look at the number of files that have already been backed up it doesn’t seem to match the number of files on my drives. I have given it full disk access through the security settings on my Mac but nothing has changed. If someone could walk me through this process either on or off list I would be most appreciative. backblaze and voiceover
Hello All: I am considering purchasing Backblaze and have some questions. I am a bit hesitant because they do not publish a customer support phone number and they don't say anything about accessibility on their web site. Thus, I would like to hear from the group about your experiences as follows: 1. I did the preliminary backup as part of the 15 day free trial. I found the interface to select drives tricky to use so I am not sure exactly what is selected for backup and what is excluded. 2. Naturally, the ultimate objective of having such a service is to be able to restore files in case of a problem. I went to the view and restore files interface but was also not able to find things like documents, desktop, downloads etc. How does this work and is the restore process accessible? If so, how is it done with voiceover? 3. What is people's experience with their customer support? Are they responsive? Do they have enough knowledge to be conversant about how to perform functions using voiceover? Replying off list is fine in order to reduce clutter on the list. My email is: radioforever @gmail.com Many thanks in advance for your help. braille notetakers
Hello All: I am in need of an immediate replacement for my Vario Ultra which has just quit working. I know that there are many people on this list who were Vario users so I am hoping someone can help with recommendations. I am looking for something as close to the Vario as possible in function, size and price. I know that Mark Taylor who is the moderator of this list has recently viewed a number of devices at a tech conference so perhaps he can weigh in on this issue as well. skype nonsense
Hello All The window chooser did it! Yay! Now, there are two pending problems. First, I find that the typical shortcuts do not work. For example, in the past I have been to us command 3 to go straight to the contacts with another shortcut to quickly make a call. These shortcuts don’t seem to work any longer. Second, when I open skype it goes to a preview window in which I have already set my preferences. I find no quick way to get rid of this. Thanks so much for everyone’s input as it is now working more or less. If I can get these two questions solved I will be a happy kid. skype nonsense
Hello All: Thanks everyone for your many suggestions. Perhaps I wasn’t clear, when I open skype all it says is that skype has no windows. Voiceover says absolutely nothing else. Everything in the menus is dimmed out so I can’t get to settings of any kind. Also, I am located in US, but I work for the folks in Geneva, so there should be no issue with location-related settings. skype nonsense
Mark and All: I believe what you say is true but it isn’t my experience. I tried turning vo off and on while skype was opened and no change. Then I tried uninstalling skype and restarting my computer, then installing it again, still no change. Then I went to the web site and downloaded a fresh copy of the app and installed that, same thing. I can’t even go to skype preferences or settings to check the microphone and camera because absolutely every menu item in skype is dimmed out. skype nonsense
Hello All: I made the mistake of updating skype trying to resolve yet another problem it was causing. Now it is totally nonfunctional. When I open it, it says that skype has no windows. None of the shortcut keys work except for command 1 which opens a totally inaccessible web site. Everything in the menus is dimmed out. I can’t even make the thing quit correctly and have to do a forced quit to close it. I am using the latest version of Mac OS. I haven’t heard any complaints about skype for a while so I assumed that it was behaving itself. Or, maybe everyone has just given up on it, a perfectly understandable response to be sure. Interesting, I have now tried it as you have explained it and everything works as expected. Re: Clarification about alius folders
Hi John: Ok, I got it to work. What I was missing is that apparently the shortcut has to also remain in the original folder. Seems very strange. Anyway, now the problem is that I can’t delete the first alius folder I made from the desktop. I clicked on remove from sidebar but that didn’t accomplish anythin. I have deleted the folder in question from where it was made. I hope this makes sense, the only problem now is deleting the first alius from my desktop. > On 17 Nov 2018, at 11:11 am, John Panarese wrote: > > If I am understanding you correctly, an Alias is just a shortcut or a > pointer file to the original item. Re: Clarification about alius folders
Hi John: I created the alius folder by making the original folder in its original location as an alius folder. Then I moved it to my desktop and made a change in the alius folder. Clarification about alius folders
Hello All: I need some clarification about how alius folders work. I had been under the imppression that if a change is made in an alius folder that it would also be made in the actual folder. So, I put a folder that I use often on my desktop thinking that keeping an alius version of folders I use frequently would save me time. However, I added something to the alius version of that folder but the change has not been reflected in the actual folder located in my documents folder structure. Can someone explain how this works? mail problem
Hi All: Thanks Tim for your tips on handling outgoing mail. I have reported this to Apple as I still find it clunky to use. I encourage others to do the same so it gets the needed attention. Aside from brief messages that require little or no correction, I have taken to composing in a word processor then pasting it into the message. Apple wants to hear from others experiencing this problem. I have screen reader optimization turned on but still can’t make any sense of it. So, there are two questions. calendars, time zones time changes etc
Hello All: Let me try to explain this question properly. I travel a lot for work and frequently change time zones. Simultaneously, I have to schedule appointments with people who are in various time zones. If I am in one certain time zone and I want to set a time with someone who is located in a different time zone I can figure out the time difference with no problem provided that I am staying on the time zone I am on when I set the appointment. However, if I set the appointment then change time zones myself the time I have set doesn’t come out right. To my way of thinking, a smart calendar should be able to adjust these timings correctly but that doesn’t seem to happen. Does anyone have suggestions for solving this problem? Is there a setting on the native calendar app that will accomodate this or is there an additional app I can use? I hope I have explained this in a way that is understandable but if not, do ask for clarification. Safari reader navigation not working properly
Hello All: I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but recently, Safari reader opens with the cursor located at the bottom of the page. I haven’t updated anything yet this change had suddenly occured. Someone on Applevis mentioned using vo plus function and left arrow to go to the top of the page but that doesn’t work for me. Has anyone else noticed this and if so, are there suggestions for getting to the top of the page efficiently? p cloud problems
Hi Simon: I have been using dropbox for many years. I have it linked to an external drive because I have a large number of files on their and I don’t want it taking up space on my hard drive. Currently, I have between 5 and 6 hundred gigs in my dropbox. Recently, I went to make some adjustments to my dropbox and found that I couldn’t open it. So I tried to uninstall it and I keep getting error messages implying that it can’t deleted because it is in use, which it isn’t, or that some extentions are in use, or some other cryptic nonsense. To try and remedy the problem I thought to try p cloud thinking that I could store all of my files in it and it wouldn’t take up space on my drive thereby eliminating the external drive issue. I installed that and basically the same thing happened. It won’t open and it also won’t uninstall. Honestly, I get so tired of this sort of thing! p cloud problems
Hello All: Hoping someone can help. In an attempt to find a backup service that doesn’t take up space on my hard drive, I downloaded and installed p cloud. I put some files into the p cloud drive but according to the web interface it is not uploading those files. Now, whenever I land on p cloud in the finder it says p cloud drive can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found. So then I tried to uninstall p cloud and when I try to do this from the applications folder I get an error message saying that the item p cloud drive can’t be moved to the trash because it is opened. I can’t find anything useful in the context menu or anywhere else for that matter. Any suggestions? skype and ios weirdness
Hello All: I have several skype accounts and today when I signed out of one and attempted to sign into another of my accounts the app wouldn't let me sign in. reading epub books in ibooks
Hello Michael and All: I have had similar experiences to Michael with Ibooks. Reading a book is fine and there is a way to navigate to the various pages in the document. I found however, that Ibooks doesn’t keep my place in the book. So I exported the files to text and have been reading them in Itext Express, I suppose Text Edit would also work for this purpose. Of course you lose the exact page numbering this way so if you needed a citation you would have to open the original in Ibooks to find it. If others have helpful experiences to share about this I would like to hear them. mini disk
Hi Chris: The mini-disk machines sure do have a nice clean signal compared with some of the inexpensive digital recorders. If you want to use it as a recorder and can not figure out how to either use it as an external drive or transfer the files via USB to your computer, I would upload in real time by patching from the audio output of the recorder into either an external sound card or directly into the audio input of your computer and do all of the editing on the computer with your audio editor of choice. You will have to monitor your levels throughout the upload process to make sure nothing goes to hot. I had to do this when I digitized my mini-disk arkives several years ago and it is time-consuming. sluggish voices
Hello All: As I wrote previously, I have also noticed slugishness in the voices after upgrading to Siera. I was able to fix this for the most part by making adjustments in the customization section of vo utility. For some reason, the default settings of the voices are not recognized. One thing I am having difficulty with though is vo keeping focus in some documents in Itext Express. All of the documents are not this way and I have not been able to arrive at any conclusions that would identify a pattern. voices under siera
Hello All: Let’s see if I can explain this coherently. I upgraded to Siera last Thursday. I use the Serena voice but when the upgrade completed, that voice was not installed correctly. We have to redownload it and reinstall it. Now there are two issues: 1. The voice just doesn’t sound like it used to exhibiting a mechanical sound, almost like a compact voice. According to the vo settings, it is, in fact, the noncompact version of this voice. 2. No matter how I adjust the speed in the settings, the voice does not change. Last night for example, I put it way up to 70 percent to see what would happen and the voice remains at about 50 percent or so. The speed does change in things like the list of emails or other information coming from the computer but it is when it is reading text that the speed does not change. Is anyone else having this or similar experiences? Do people have suggestions about what can be done? bluejeans network
Hi Simon and All: The Bluejeans network is a video conferencing service similar to Zoom and Linda I guess. It is used for a lot of global academic applications. The interesting thing about it though is that it calibrates to the band width potential of each user. So if you have a mix of participants with some having high-speed capacity and others having only audio phone capability, it adjusts. This makes it possible for people to participate who have little or no tech infrastructure. Jean -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list. dropbox on external drive
I have used my dropbox on an external drive for over a year and while there have been frustrations, it is certainly doable. The most important thing I have found is that you have to remember to quit dropbox prior to disconnecting the external drive. Similarly, the external drive should be connected for some time prior to starting dropbox. The most recent time I had trouble, the problem was rectified when I disconnected then reconnected the external drive then restarting dropbox. Also, remember that dropbox keeps files for 30 days after deletion so even if things become hopelessly tangled it is possible to relink everything and resync it. Finally, the dropbox web site where files are stored has been significantly improved and is now quite usable so even if you don’t want to use an external drive you can deselect the larger folders so they won’t be copied onto your drive. If you do this then you would just continue with the desktop app as before but you would only keep the files you need often on the desktop app. Moving files around on the web site can be a bit tricky though.
