Re: M1 Mac mini just beeps

2022-07-18 Thread Violet Gill
Hello everyone just wanted to update you all. My new Mac Mini is fully working
and operational. Having a pointing device during set up connected did the
trick. Thank you so much for all your help.

You definitely need a display and mouse for the initial set up process that’s
what I have heard here and from doing research for these couple days I hope I
can use my new Mac soon.

Brad,
I didn't realize I had replied to this thread. Yes I agree, I find
the meny on the Mac version of Word just fine. I hope to spend some time
working on this and seeing what works for me. Ultimately I will
translate some documents to braille. Using styles will make this easier.

Thank God the menu bar is always there on a Mac. You can access everything in
the ribbon through the menu bar.

RE: M1 Mac mini just beeps

2022-07-16 Thread matthew dyer
Hi, Perhaps this is different, but I have never had to connect a mouse to go
through the first setup. I have always just pressed enter on the keyboard to
get get things going. Maybe this is different on the m1 machines. I can not
test as I have no m1 here to test with.

Re: M1 Mac mini just beeps

Brad,
Wow. You must have heard me griping about that annoying beep. Thanks for the
tip.

Another source of persistent “beeping” on Macs running the Big Sur or Monterrey
operating systems, is an alert that lets VoiceOver users know that there is a
notification or system dialog present on the screen.

This alert can be disabled as follows:
1. Open VoiceOver Utility using VO + F8.
2. Select Verbosity, from the Categories table, or just press CMD + NumRow 2.
3. Select the Announcements tab, and then navigate to the item labeled, "Play
Tone When system dialogs are displayed”.
4. Open the Pop-Up button, and select Do Nothing, if you wish to eliminate the
audible alert.

Re: M1 Mac mini just beeps

2022-07-15 Thread Brad Snyder
On windows, the ribbon is very accessible. There are keyboard shortcuts, called
Key Tips, that are very accessible. These Key Tips do not exist on a Mac, and
I find the ribbon to be worthless when using MS office on a Mac.
Thank God the menu bar is always there on a Mac. You can access everything in
the ribbon through the menu bar.

What do you do with the mouse or trackpad once you have it connected does
voiceover then turn on normally with the key combination cmdf5.

Re: M1 Mac mini just beeps

2022-07-15 Thread Brad Snyder

HTH.

Re: M1 Mac mini just beeps

2022-07-15 Thread Brad Snyder
When setting up a new Mac mini, iMac, or Mac Studio, you MUST connect either a
mouse or Magic trackPad to get past the initial setup process.
Even if you do not need one of these peripherals because you are a blind
VoiceOver user, you still must connect a pointing device to get past the setup
process on one of these new Macs.
Not sure if this is a hardware requirement of the M1 Macs, or if this is a
requirement of the current OS. Either way, in my experience, you cannot
proceed with the setup process until you meet this requirement.

Additionally, when using a Magic bluetooth Keyboard with one of these new M1
Macs, you will need to use CMD + F5 to turn VoiceOver on/off. You cannot use
the Touch ID sensor as on a TouchBar MacBook Pro.
It just doesn’t work.

Performing a 3-finger double tap gesture on a trackpad, only mutes VoiceOver
speech. This does not toggle VoiceOver on/off. You must use CMD + F5 for this.

HTH

2022-07-14 Thread Dave Carlson
Don’t think you hold the control key while pressing the power button three
time. Try without the control key. Also, are you using the built-in keyboard,
or a Bluetooth or USB connected keyboard? If so, you may need to press a
different key to emulate control.
