Is there a setting to enable this reader view? This morning I was

Intriguing issue.

Office Open XML word processing document 369 KB

From E.T.'s Keyboard...
I reserve the right to be wrong. Which will never happen.

A few notes on Microsoft Word for Mac:

1. Loading large documents (for example 50 pages) is a very slow process
even on a fast M1 Pro machine. I don't know whether it's Apple's or
Microsoft's bug. The fact that Pages doesn't have this problem suggests
it's an MS-Word issue.

2. Use Print Layout, otherwise the document being edited won't be very
accessible with VoiceOver.

Re: Microsoft Word for Mac

2024-01-03 Thread 'Mervin Keck III' via MacVisionaries
I use Word, Excel, and OneDrive on the MacBook Pro M1. I have not had any
issues with accessibility. I have Office 365 but have not played with the other
Office Apps even though they are on my Mac. I did put both word and Excel on my
Dock for faster access. And removed Pages, and Numbers since I also have a
Windows 11 Pro and can move between the two computers. Especially with OneDrive
helping me with document management. Oh, I also have OneNote but have not
really played with it even though it is supposed to be getting better with the
latest version. I did install it but have not had time to teach myself all the

Any suggestions or thoughts?

RE: Microsoft word on the Mac.

2020-04-11 Thread Simon A Fogarty
With office 365 you have a range of products you can purchase and that’s what
it is,

I 2 have the office 365 suite on my notebooks both mac and windows,

I also have office 365 applications word excel powerpoint sway teams sharepoint
outlook tasks
And groups in stalled to my iPhone and ipad

Yes there is a office suite that can be installed to the ipad and the iPhone,

The main thing is that with office 365 it’s an email / password activation to
get these software packages working in a full state on the computer or mobile
device.

With my package I also have the ability to share with 5 other people and
install to up to 5 devices and also I can access documents on my web interface
office applications
Also as for accessible office 365 web applications are very accessible from
what I can tell,

I use excel mainly on the net via teams and it’s fine, and with co authoring of
documents you can see who does what in a document and with sharepoint tied in
you can version check

The only thing I’ve not used in O365 is skype for business but then I’ve got
zoom and a phone for that.

Subject: Re: Microsoft word on the Mac.

Hello Mr. Carlson, yes that is correct let me explain. When you have office 365
you have the choice of either using the web version of an application or the
version of the application that you actually install. Or at least that’s the
way it was initially. These days I believe it is only the application install.
The difference they were blind users is huge. If you use the web version of the
application a screen reader can’t figure out where exact because it’s all based
on a webpage. If it’s on the computer, then of course the screenreader is based
on what’s presented to it locally. So to some of my answers yes I use a local
version of the application but the subscription really is to office 365. I have
the five device pack. That means that I can use Windows, Mac, a tablet if I
wish, and even a smart phone if I wish. Because all of those devices are
natively covered by my subscription. However I believe the tablet and the phone
are restricted to the web version not the installed version. Now that I think
about it, the phone does use and version meant for the phone. But I think the
tablet version is indeed a webpage. All versions have the account pain. It
basically shows the fact that you are using one seat of the license. I hope
this clarification, and explanation helps?

And closing I’ve been using office three $0.65 late 2015.

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

Re: Microsoft word on the Mac.

2020-04-10 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hello Maurice,

Have you tried working with tables in a Word document on the mac side? It used
to be impossible so I was wondering whether you had any experience of tables in
Word on the mac. Another word processing app on the Mac, Nisus Writer, was
very promising but for the tables again. It seems to be one of those features
whose implementation with accessibility in mind has always been a problem.

Okay, thanks. I have an Office 365 subscription, but the actual apps are

Re: Microsoft word on the Mac.

2020-04-09 Thread maurice mines

2020-04-09 Thread maurice mines
Hello, I use Microsoft Word for the Mac practically on a daily basis. The ways
that I’ve made it work for me, is by first going to that ribbon. I stop
interacting with it then I get to the point where it will show me the text
that’s currently in the document. I interact with that and I’m able to read the
document. At least that’s a whole lot better than Microsoft Word to the max
started out back in 2016. Back then it wasn’t usable for very much other than
you could create a document but you had to leave it in draft mode. Today’s
version at least is usable and all of its modes.

When I talk about my experience with Microsoft Word to the math I want to be
clear that it is the version that is actually on the local machine. Not the web
version of Microsoft Word which I believe still is virtually inaccessible. And
when I deal with documents that I create an word on the Mac and read them in
the version of the same program and Windows live had very few compatibility
issues.

For extremely short Word documents, such as the signature file or something of
that nature. I can even use TextEdit or doubt in terms of reading it. I’m going
to include my signature file which actually is a Word document just as an
example. Please note however my signature file is not an endorsement or
discrediting my position which the file mentions. I did not write the actual
text of the file. But in order to make it work for me I converted the document
that was originally in HTML format into a Word document for use as an email
signature. In addition I use word for the Mac for most of not all of my
academic work that requires the use of Microsoft Word. And ideas it depending
on how long the document is for meeting assignments. Yes I think there could be
many improvements to the Mac product but it is at least functional right now
and can be used easily.

So here’s the file. Remember this is just for an example. Of a Word document.
Although I did not write this document, I am responsible for its layout since I
had to make a few adjustments. Thank you very much in advance for reading this.
Everyone stay safe and if possible stay where you are. Have other nice day.

Please note, the above text of this email have spent dictated to the computer
using dictation software. If there are portions of my writing that are not
understandable and/or have grammatical syntax and/or other errors, those errors
may be the result of either the software, or the dictation process. If there’s
something that you truly don’t understand please contact me and I will do my
very best to clear up any misunderstandings.

Yes I find when using word on the Mac that it is less responsive and it does
not always respond to commands to move by para etc so I typically still use
pages but do use word for a couple of things - normally sharing files to one
drive for collaborative working with peers. Interestingly I find the IPAD
versions of ms office much better than the desktop versions.

Re: Microsoft Word for Mac

2020-01-19 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries

Hi Mark,
Good questions. If re-inventing the wheel is like thinking out loud,
it's an oxymoron. (smiles)

Let me boil it down. I want to stop using Windows. I currently have
a license for Duxbury on Windows. If I had a Bluetooth embosser I would
be done with Windows and upgrade to the Mac version in a heartbeat. The
embosser I have is ancient and very heavy. It should work on the Mac but
I need to confirm. Being deafblind, I like creating quick reference or
cheat sheets as something I can fall back in.

MS Word. Ok I had not considered Pages but it sure could work and I
can test with the demo version of DBT. I can use that $99 elsewhere so
appreciate the Pages option.

My "project" includes working more with the iPhone and iPad thus the
focus on iCloud Drive which finally look good.

Are you using Duxbury for Windows? Or Mac?

Why are you using MS Word with Duxbury? Is it because of Duxbury MS Word
template importer?

Are you creating new documents to use with Duxbury? Or are you receiving the
Word files from a third-party? These are important questions that need to be
stated in order for a comprehensive reply, at least, in my opinion.

As others have stated, Pages can import and export documents from and to the MS
Word file format. As long as the file does not contain any extended fonts or,
as long as the MS word file is saved with all of the fonts imbedded in the
document, you should not encounter any problems using Pages, all things being
equal, that is.

Another option you might consider would be to obtain an older stand-alone
version of Word for Windows, if Windows is your preferred platform; say, Word
2007 or Word 2010, or even Word 2013.

As I read this thread, I can't help but get the feeling that you are needlessly
attempting to reinvent the proverbial wheel. (smile).

MS Word is used with Duxbury, but I am going to try using plain text
to import into DBT. My Office 365 subscription is up in 3 months so have
time. I just don't need anything but Word so will see how TezEdit does.
The only thing I need to look out for is hard returns after each line
instead of paragraphs. I didn't see any other options on the Office 365
site.

Somehow, I lost the start of this discussion. My general advice regarding
Microsoft Word for Mac would be to make sure you’re using the latest version
(e.g., Monthly Channel) from Office 365, with an up to date Mac OS/VoiceOver.

There is no doubt that Microsoft Office for Mac has been improving in its
accessibility over time.

Re: Microsoft Word for Mac

2020-01-18 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
MS Word is used with Duxbury, but I am going to try using plain text
to import into DBT. My Office 365 subscription is up in 3 months so have
time. I just don't need anything but Word so will see how TezEdit does.
The only thing I need to look out for is hard returns after each line
instead of paragraphs. I didn't see any other options on the Office 365
site.

Hi ET,

You mean office 365 subscription.

 As for cost,
It would depend on which subscription to the Office 365 system you have,

You can get one where office is based in the cloud that might be your cheapest
But I'm not sure you save a lot and you can't easily get just word,

Have a look at the office 365 page
www.office365.com
and see what they say about different packages available.

What is the status of microsoft word 2016 accessibility on the mac, or office
for that matter? Is it usable or is the iWork suite of products still the way
to go on the mac? Thanks, Brian

inconsistent. I use custom bullets in one of the documents I create, and
there’s no way to identify with VO which one I’m selecting. I’ve also
discovered that things tend to work better with cursor tracking off. I can’t
really speak to how well it compares to Pages, since because of compatibility
and familiarity I have stuck with Word.

Excel is another matter. Maybe others who have been using the Mac longer would
be able to work with it, but I found it nearly impossible. Navigating the
screen, though cumbersome, is doable. Editing cells was another matter. I
would try to edit one and end up editing a completely different cell. I gave
up on it and imported the sheet to Numbers.

Power Point isn’t so great either. I have rarely gotten VO to speak while
trying to edit the contents of an item in a slide. I have not tried it with
Keynote. Mostly what I have to do is small edits on someone else’s work, so I
put up with it in order to insure that the file I save as a .ppsx will work on
the Windows laptop where it will be used.

I can’t speak to Outlook, though others on this list say that it works well.

As for which is best, I guess that will depend on what you need to do.
Everyone here will have an opinion.

Re: Microsoft word for the Mac

2015-09-24 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yes, it has the ribbon.
Currently you need a 365 subscription if you want the somewhat accessible
version, though a box version might be coming out later in the year which you
can buy outright. Office for Mac 2011 is available for purchase outright, but
is not accessible at all.
I’ve found Powerpoint to be accessible so far, but Word I would still avoid on
the Mac if you can. It’s very flaky.

Re: Microsoft Word on the mac does not want to read more than a few pages out of a long document

2015-08-12 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Just a note which is probably stating the obvious, but if you're having trouble
with Microsoft Word or any part of the Microsoft sweet then please please feed
it back to them! I have!! The only way they'll listen to us and improve their
accessibility for us is if as many people as possible feed back and tell them
what's wrong and how it needs to be fixed. If we don't all feed back then
it'll just get ignored/brushed under the carpet, which none of us want! Having
said that, if you find positive stuff then please let them know about that
too, so they don't always think we're just a bunch of moaners.

Thanks, and sorry for the rant, but really, if we want things fixed then the
only way it'll be achieved is by feedback from as many as possible.

VoiceOver becomes, and it stops indicating paragraph and line breaks properly.

Re: Microsoft Word on the mac does not want to read more than a few pages out of a long document

2015-08-12 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Krister,

Thank you for confirming this. I think it's fair to say that I've given
Microsoft Office a good chance on the mac but I find it difficult to justify
subscribing to Office365 any longer. I shall have to pull the plug on this and
just stick to Pages and office on the Windows side I run in virtual machine -
not very convenient.

Thanks again

Re: Microsoft word for mac again.

2013-06-06 Thread Jürgen Fleger
But it's an interesting question anyway. There was a huge thread on this topic
and to me it would be interesting wether there are improvements internally in
the company concerning accessibility for MS Office for Mac.
So, if the Lady from Microsoft still reads our posts she might say a word what
happened so far. Could you please do so?

Thanks and
all the best

Being that Microsoft has not released a new version since 2010 I suspect
VO support has not since been added.
