Great idea, Sam. If it can’t go through MM, then at the system level,
seems like you should be able to get it to work the way you want. I
would try through the app itself and if not found there, the at the
System level.

2022-03-04 Thread Henry Seiden
Good to hear. There are clearly some issues we uniquely have with MM and
they’re different in differing conditions, connection methods, etc.
They do occur.

On another subject, I posted an issue with registering MM on specific
servers, when moving laptops’ locations wirelessly connecting them.
Particularly Yahoo! where the server claims it gets overloaded with to
many requests (error A1) from MM and results in error reports and
failures when changing from one connection method to another. That was a
Yikes(!) moment for me, although to be honest I hardly use Yahoo!

[MlMt] Mailmate r5874 Issue with accounts [Yahoo Server fails to stay online when laptop moves to a new internet connection]

2022-03-07 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello,

Just letting you know of continuing issue with Accounts staying on line,
in particular Yahoo! Coming back with an A1 connection error. I found
that do duplicate the issue regularly in this version, and I think later
revisions as well of MailMate here are the steps:
1. Starting with a working, non-failing condition of MailMate, select a
different connection method. For instance without leaving my house, I
chose to go from a LAN connection (plugged in LAN cable) to wireless
connection (unplug the LAN cable and turn on the Wireless on the same
machine).

2. MailMate was left open on the desktop.
3. Immediately (within 30 seconds of changing connection methods the
warning popped up that the connection to Yahoo! Server had failed due to
the error and a choice of try later or take the account off-line was
required.
4. Disconnecting the account (taking it off line) got rid of the
warning.
5. Leaving it off for over 30 seconds, then turning it back to online
did NOT solve the problem. However, closing MailMate app for about a
minute and then restarting did solve the problem permanently, until the
next move to another wired or wireless connection.

Re: [MlMt] "Date Received" column width

2022-03-11 Thread Henry Seiden

Hi Randall,

There may be additional steps, I see that when the Date Received column
is on the far right it appears to act differently. Firstly, the
rightmost column is right justified. I tried moving that column one
space to the left, then adjusting it size-wise , then pushing it back
over and it seems to work. [Maybe we should share some screen
shots](https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2a80zy41i2usxwk/AACvqtzpwrJ4gLqTmDRtuqona?dl=0)?

How about if you send an example of the problem you’re seeing?

Not sure why your “virtual” mailboxes are labelled differently than
mine, but they seem to be so. Possibly the name is inherited from the
name of the IMAP Servers default accounts list? Not sure of that.
Subject of another question for someone else.

So, I am sending several step-by step screen shots of the menus and how
I did the column adjustments. If it doesn’t work the same for you in
r5875, please file a feedback report with Benny. I believe that it works
the way I demonstrate it and that’s bout all I can tell you, that
setting the top level account or virtual account (E.G. Inbox/All
Inboxes) adjusts all the sub-mailboxes, both as to width and relative
column locations and I find it very handy to have this feature. Looking
just at the All Inbox while we adjust.

See my Dropbox link for the 4 screenshots, and images’ descriptions:
1. Starting position of the Date Received Column all the way over on the
right hand side. Time stamp@21.09.41.
2. Moved the date Received column in on spot to the left. You can check
other sub mailboxes to see if the size is reflected there. Time
stamp@21.10.16.
3. Use your cursor to adjust the column in question. I this case I made
it much bigger. Note that Today would be replaced by the full date
because for some reason I am using a relative setting, the column goes
all the way over to the TOD. Timestamp @21.11.22.
4. Slide the column back to its original spot. Note that the same column
width travels to the new location and that the new location and column
width is reflected on all sub-folders below in the hierarchy. Time
stamp:21.12.06.

You can change the columns displayed in the list by CTL+clicking in the
heading to show your column choices. I tried the same functionality in
specifically created, non-generic mailboxes like this User Group. Works
the same.

So what I’m saying is that any single grouping of mailboxes can be
adjusted the way you like, not just a grouping. Extremely versatile!

It's a general problem (except I don't see the window opening twice).
MailMate appears to not properly wait for the message to be ready to

This is a likely bug to have been introduced in relation to recent

You were right. Default Signature placement on Top needed to be
reselected for some reason after new update installation. Not sure
how/why Caret Placement is supposed to work, but the Above Signature
setting choices seems to work for new replies.

For me, these two settings place the replies after the signature as in
this message, without having to move anything manually. NB, a
previously prepared Draft message retains however it was previously set
without respect to Signature Preferences’ settings. Not sure what the
caret position is defined as (thought it was the leading character on
the reply, which in this reply follows the last part of the signature

Sadly, none of these settings are explained adequately, IMO, in the Help

[MlMt] Build 5871: Setting date sorting parameters(^) and columns in, folders/sub-folders in the Left Bar

2022-02-22 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello All,

I made two interesting discoveries that seems undocumented in the Help
Menus in this Build. It seems interesting that it isn’t mentioned, but
it seems to hold true in all tabs affecting settings of sub-tabs within
tabs of settings like columns adding or deleting them and setting the
ordering parameter (E.G., sorting early to later or vice-versa). Also
found a specific exception which you may also find interesting.

Case 1: You have or have created a folder like “Archive” (in my case
I renamed it to All Archive 2022 for reasons unimportant but obvious).
In that folder there are default columns or added columns. Within that
group there are several Account folders with messages:
1. You add a new column to this top level folder. The change is
reflected to all of the sub folders automagically. I can find no rules
or setting methods to affect this change in the default settings, it
just happens. The only exception I can find, is that the position of the
column at the end of the list of columns by default may be respecified
in the sub-columns or changed in any sub-folder to whatever you want
independently from the main column or other sub-folders after the main
folder changes. Kind of like a hierarchical ordering setting.
2. Likewise a setting to the top level folder in terms of date ordering

I tried out Case 1. above for my own folders and found it works between

Quinn,

I agree, but it’s above my pay grade to decide that part. Frankly, I

have no idea what it was before in previous iterations. This part does
makes sense only if its consistent. And its barely so at this stage,

Hello All,

I made two interesting discoveries that seems undocumented in the

of sub-tabs within tabs of settings like columns adding or deleting
them and setting the ordering parameter (E.G., sorting early to later
or vice-versa). Also found a specific exception which you may also
find interesting.

Case 1: You have or have created a folder like “Archive” (in my
case I renamed it to All Archive 2022 for reasons unimportant but
obvious). In that folder there are default columns or added columns.
Within that group there are several Account folders with messages:
1. You add a new column to this top level folder. The change is
reflected to all of the sub folders automagically. I can find no
rules or setting methods to affect this change in the default
settings, it just happens. The only exception I can find, is that the
position of the column at the end of the list of columns by default
may be respecified in the sub-columns or changed in any sub-folder to
whatever you want independently from the main column or other
sub-folders after the main folder changes. Kind of like a
hierarchical ordering setting.
2. Likewise a setting to the top level folder in terms of date
ordering - oldest to newest or vice-versa will affect all the

[MlMt] Keystroke combination that seem to work for me in MM Build 5670+

2022-02-22 Thread Henry Seiden

I found these keystroke combos that seem to work on my machine without
any alteration in MM. Maybe we should start a list of them to see if
they are “universal” for all or use the list to build up something
for Benny to put in his help docs?

Anyway, I think these are supported system level (Finder) keystrokes.
Some may need to be enabled in the System Preferences and when enabled
there, seem to work OK in MM:

* ⌘ +SHIFT+”U” = mark as read
* ⌘ + right click mouse= select or deselect (highlight) a
non-contiguous message(s).
* Shift+right click = select a contiguous group of messages starting
from the top, click the first one, then go the bottom of a contiguous
group and then do this to select them all.
* All text based substitutions you may have in MacOS. Like the ⌘ CMD
key, ⌥ OPT keys.
* Fractions, superscripts, Universal charactersets if enabled in your
system settings.

Got any more?

Hello Francesco,

I can see in my IMAP setting there is a button called “Edit
Subscriptions” below the IMAP section in the Edit screen. Have you
looked into that to show or hide sub-folders within your default IMAP
folders or others you may have added?

So, no you don’t have to recreate the account to fix those issues. But
yes, they perhaps need to be adjusted when you add an account to
MailMate, possibly when you’ve added folders in some outside Client
other than MailMate to that same account.

I would start there to review the settings. Benny limits the size of
responses to our posts or I would send you a screenshot of the Edit IMAP
Account screen. But you probably can find your way, I suppose. If you
need details, let me know and I will throw a screen shot up on Dropbox

Right, normal click on both.

Also, the first one (⌘ +SHIFT+U - mark as read) keystroke marks a
varied group of read and unread messages as read first, then a second
click will flip it to unread.

Yes, both are standard settings MacOS Finder for file handling.
That’s how I discovered them.

Benny mentioned in another post that he doesn’t want to include
instructions on anything but MM app operation, not System defaults text
substitutions or configurations. Probably a very good idea as they are
subject to modification from outside the app, about which he has no
control.

I think it’s worthwhile for users to know that it’s supported in MM,
as not all apps do (even though you’d think it was true everywhere, it
isn’t). MM has added many features that take getting used to, but so
far, none that affect the system setting’s functionality within the
app environment.

[MlMt] Feature Request: Keystroke to turn on/off all HTML, including html-style signatures in new mail and replies

2022-02-16 Thread Henry Seiden
Hello,

Is there a way in MailMate to automatically set a message going to a specific
address as text only? Failing that, what is the impression here about a
keystroke command to force it off for one email? Here I have turned off the
HTML Signature variant and set that signature for use with this addressee.
Don’t know if this will stick.

Since MailMate is plain text by default, will this do the trick to send plain
text? Replies ought to be plain text with replies that do not include markdown
nor signatures… True?

Re: [MlMt] Auto-typo

Trying in MM… UID did (the CAP typed term is NOT auto-corrected, the lower
case is auto-corrected as shown. Maybe that is why some run across the anomaly
and some do not?

The other option stated by commenters is to turn off correction completely in
MM, from it’s default setting. I’m considering which to do. There are other
spelling corrections I have noted but do not have handy to share with you.

If MM relies entirely on Apple’s correction as it appears and other apps have
their own table or do not rely on Apple at all, could this be why? I do not
know how to check on spelling auto-correction in other apps. So I guess my
question is do other app relay on their own lookup table for spelling
correction or some combination of processes or what?

[MlMt] Moving settings to a new computer from an existing installation

2022-02-19 Thread Henry Seiden
Had no success moving IMAP accounts/settings from an existing installation to a
new computer. So, importing accounts from scratch (actually exporting them is
impossible because that functionality doesn’t seem to exist on the new
computer. Tried copying my account setting (Users>username>Library…) which
didn’t move any accounts.

Tops on my list of new/workable features is to move all settings (account
settings, MM options, installed features) en masse by copy or export/import in
Finder or MM, from a working installation of MM to a new computer, in the case
of a clean install onto the same computer, or a different one from a file
backup.

MailMate clean install’s just fine by itself but all features, IMAP accounts
and settings now need to be individually installed.

The feature called Import Accounts contains nothing in the new installation and
can’t use accounts created on the System (System Preferences>Accounts) or in
another app (like Mail.app), unless they are appear installed in MailMate. That
seems weird. Tried it on a new Beta (12.3) OS installation that had Mail.app
accounts already logged in on that app, but the accounts installed there were
not visible in MM, but some are visible as choices in the old, previous
version(?).

Re: [MlMt] Auto-typo [language customizations, two-step approaches, more]

2022-02-19 Thread Henry Seiden
I found several support docs about auto-correction in either or both specific
application and related to System Settings, so it is possible to use some
auto-correction and language customizations in other apps… So are these desired
features?
Apple: HT207767, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207767
How-to-Geek:
https://www.howtogeek.com/363905/how-to-disable-or-customize-autocorrect-on-mac/
Microsoft (relevant to their own apps, particularly Outlook and Word for
spellcheck and auto-correct options:
*
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/let-outlook-for-mac-automatically-detect-and-spell-check-languages-in-your-emails-1a94b031-78c3-4aa8-abe2-c2d89a01a2d4

Not in my opinion for MM, but that is me I suppose a feature request to Benny
would be considered, but I think off or on with Apple’s System settings is good
enough. Similarly for language customizations. For example, I use a set of text
substitutions in MacOS to handle fractions, superscripted numerals that has
served me well. Luckily these carry through to all apps and to iOS devices
(mostly).

Benny,

With r5875 I have a new problem with this build… “Ridiculously long
signature error,” detected by SMTP Server (AWS). I’m reverting to
old version to compare on the same account and email previously sent,
but to my gmail account to sample the error.

Since I am limited by space for attachments, I can send you a raw header
example (attachment, not enclosed), showing the problem that’s being
grabbed by AWS SES servers. However I would have to do so to a different
address if you provide me with one. Speculating, I assume it’s
actually sticking all or part of the message body content into the
signature Markup to cause it to swell to that extent.

Since they did not say that the message was returned or trapped, I
assume it’s being delivered with the warning in place. Reverted back
to the previous build and tried it again to a Gmail account and there
was no trapping error returned to me. I therefore conclude it’s
something within your latest update causing it. So, until you un-revise
the Test Build, will not use 5875. The scrolling issue on reading
messages was NOT a problem for me anyway.

Yeah, that would never work.

So, that’s what I thought too, but it actually does work, as long as
I never click the “Include messages in any submailboxes of this

As far as I can tell, these smart mailboxes aren’t synched to the

I'm sorry; I should have been more careful here -- the keystroke is a
toggle, and what it does is dependent on the state of the selected
message. Whatever the read/unread state is cmd-shift-u will change it
to the opposite state.

I don't remember what the keystroke does if you have multiple messages

Don’t know if you’re interested, but I’m using the developer

fluid aspects of MailMate, you should know that Develop Builds are

The “Check for Update” changes to “Test Build”. Benny is much

defaults delete com.freron.MailMate MmMailboxRelatedStates

After relaunching MailMate, I selected the top-most view of my IMAP

Columns”. This worked! It didn't apply to Drafts, Sent, or Spam
folders, but all other folders now have the default columns applied.

However, I still don't see a way to reset the sort preferences in the

I've resigned to just using the basic columns that are set with

Maybe I'm overlooking how it should work.

[MlMt] HTML formatting Kudos [kudos & hints at formatting HTML versions of email]

2022-03-29 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello Benny,

Just a note to tell you how much I enjoyed the HTM feature that I
discovered in the new version 5882. Don’t know if this feature was
there before this version, but since I had need to format the page
simply and the signature specifically and you helped me out on the
signature formatting in the recent past, I return the favor to document
this feature I discovered by accident. It proved very useful for me in
combination with some research.

Don’t know if you recall my previous questions and your answers about
formatting an HTML variant signature section such as the one below in
this message. You helped me to understand that the inline formatting was
the correct way to utilize the page construction features of MailMate. I
use it all the time now, even if it is only for message formatting.

I recently was interested in using a default format style to match the
signature text, and found a very simple way to do so for the entire
message page, using the CSS style, Body. My page as you may note is set
up to use specific styles, backgrounds and insert a small logo as well,
just in the signature line using your signature settings. So, to format
the entire message body, I simply found that the ‘body’ command
works for the entire message and added that style to the body rather
easily.

Your manual is unfortunately unclear that the body command formats an
entire HTML (variant) version message page but it seemed a worthwhile
try to to experiment with it. Lo! It worked great. So, thanks for your
insight into the working a of MailMate and using CSS styling to format
an entire page and signature line all in one CSS layout.

Not to mention, for people who only want to see text format versions of
email, the text version remains untouched and can be read out in any
font the user desires.

[MlMt] Test Build 1.14 (5869)

2022-02-06 Thread Henry Seiden
Using test Build 5869 update, installed on MacBook Pro 2019 in MacOS
(Monterey) 12.1 (21C52).

Don’t see progress on any issues previously reported addressed in this
build (in particular, summarizing my previous posts which BTW don’t
seem to be published on this list):

*No bulleted or numbered lists available.
*Organization of Archived mailboxes not as expected (cannot show
archived specific mailboxes defined by rules). Thew only way that works
is to use SmartMailbox but that can only be categorized in one
level/method, E.G., by date. I would want the groupings in
archived-specific files and by date in some way. This is similar
functionality to Apple Mail.app and has been in place for years.
*Font specific email in the HTML version of Mail matching that of the
non-html version. Some have expressed the same thing in a different way
as using partial HTML for the signature block only, instead of the full
HTML of text+signature, similar to other apps like Apple Mail, Airmail,
others. In another way could I use a preset HTML code to do it?
*Better Manual for the release versions (when released that goes into
more detail on use of signatures, composing, and other parts of
MailMate. I discovered many nice features almost by accident rather than
by intent. My suggestion to the author (Benny) is to have someone
outside build a better manual for the release version of Mailmate.
Failing that, maybe a build list which gives some idea as to what was
fixed historically by build number. These “standard practices” seem
to be overlooked in doing updates and not followed up later. I realize
the author’s constraints and trying to be positive about the
development of this fine application.

Re: [MlMt] migrating from apple mail to mail mate - prospective user

Seems like an IMAP Server locally run could defray the entire expense of
personal email servers. For business where it’s likely necessary on a
company/private server that wouldn’t be an option.

For me, iCloud accounts are included with other services so there’s no
financial incentive. My message counts/sizes are entirely within the
scope other storage plan. However I do manage the storage of archival
data by year and keep two years only current and previous years data on
line per account.

[MlMt] Reinstalling MailMate after a Mac OS Erase and Install

2022-02-08 Thread Henry Seiden
Here’s a MailMate question I’ve been thinking about: I occasionally
completely reinstall the entire drive from scratch, when new operating
systems are installed and just for that eventuality has anyone had a
similar occasion to reinstall MailMate from scratch?

First there are the “built-in apps that come over with the OS. Their
set up are almost exclusively in /Library/Application Support files.
Cache files are not included but usually rebuild just fine.

Second, I have a nice list of Apple apps that for instance, come over
from the App Store with all but Application Support files. So those are
relatively easy to reinstall.

Then there are non-App Store apps that have varying levels of additional
application settings stored hither and yon. Many of those are
rebuildable after installing the app alone from a blank slate. What
about MailMate? Figuring that it belongs in the this third tier.

For instance would installing the entire MailMate Support file structure
intact from a back up do a complete job of it - all user settings,
mailbox settings, the lock mailboxes, smart mailbox settings and
contents. I’ve discovered that the Messages for example are in,
~/Users/com.freron.MailMate. Will the app/system rebuild the rest
-caches, other files, with just that?

upgrade and I don’t notice it for awhile. Just noticed today and
remember turning it off before. Just sayin’. Anybody had this one?

one of my sent messages folders and then back to that inbox, the
displayed columns in that inbox are now different than what I started
with.

Specifically, when viewing my gmail inbox, I see the expected columns,
including "From", etc. I then switch to my gmail sent folder, where I
have a "To" column instead of the "From". So far, so good. But if I
then switch back to my gmail inbox, I'm left with the "To" column,
rather than it switching back to viewing the "From" column. Other
columns (e.g. Attachments) also disappear. I have to manually select
"Revert to Default Columns" to correct it.

I can't tell if this is new behavior in one of the recent test builds,
but I certainly find myself needing to "Revert to Default Columns" way
more often in recent weeks.

Any thoughts?

Hi Bob,

I’m in a similar situation to you, but using MailMate for a couple

“Mailing Lists” which was created for us, the tabs along the top of
the edit window, Mailboxes, Conditions, Submailboxes and Rules. You can
change the operation of that root mailbox and the messages it contains.
In this case the root is selecting “ALL MESSAGES.”

Likewise you can edit the sub mailboxes contained in the root,
similarly. To your question about the use of Conditions… In this
case, this root folder is dedicated to selecting all messages where they
are marked by the sender as a list (the list-ID>identifier in the header
is “existing”). So the server says the message is from a “list”.

You can also ‘ripple down’ the settings in any message box/folder
to its sub folders, by merely changing the root folder’s settings. In
this particular case we create subfolders to hold all specific messages
and the root shows all of them lumped together.

Does that answer your question?

2023-09-03 Thread Henry Seiden

Benny,

Please understand, I continue to support your efforts. Despite what
others here call “being salty”, I remain a fan and user of a level
that works for my needs, presently experimental build 1.14 (r5978). If
anyone needs a more stable product, recommend you try the latest test
build, r5937.

In case no one has said it here recently, MailMate certainly
out-distances the performance of other Mail apps in both it’s
versatility, customization and overall performance to users of any
version of MacOS. That is in itself a fabulous achievement.

The site for downloading these *experimental builds* is therefore not
well publicized for the reason you say, Benny. You can find all builds
in the archive page but your own needs and use levels may be worth
considering before installation of an experimental build.

Look for Test Builds in the normal way when Benny chooses to get one to
that level of his own expectation.

Re: [MlMt] Why do I get a skinny window?

2023-09-15 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello Annamarie,

Saw your skinny viewer message window link. Some additional context
would be helpful. Without regard to that, sharing some thoughts on how
to proceed further to fix what I would term from your description, a
restart OS window re-size problem (one I have not seen before)…

Questions:
* When did this start? Perhaps after an OS upgrade, new version of MM,
an Erase and Install of your startup disk or migration to an entirely
new Mac? Generally something triggers a similar situation.

* What version of MM are you running and did you recently upgrade it?
* Seems this is (depending on the above) related to some settings in
your installation got changed/updated, particularly one(s) that affect
the size of the message viewer window. MM has user settings and default
settings. It could have been a user-adjustable Layout setting. If not a
user setting, then its possibly one set in MM’s numerous default
settings made through a CLI (command line interface)- Terminal. I would
recommend saving your current settings before experimenting further.
* Have you tried to adjust the Layout settings to different ones? Do the
settings made “stick” after rebooting (come back to the size
selected)? How? The Layout option is in the View Menu. They are
contextual, that is different depending the selected, active screen.
* So you could try to open a message and select a Layout for it in
Menu>View>Layout from the presets there. See if it the Layout remains as
you had it when restarting your machine. This will tell you that your
settings remain as selected. If they don’t the problem is an internal
setting (Terminal setting) within MM.

* You might also try an app upgrade as a solution.

Communicating results of your troubleshooting might give users here some
further clues as to what happened. Others may have added thoughts or
experiences.

Re: [MlMt] Ver 1.14 (5937)

2023-09-14 Thread Henry Seiden

Thomas,

If you had a saved version of the MailMate settings and databases in a
back up somewhere, all your previous settings could be restored, likely
including those mentioned and perhaps some you didn’t realize as yet.
Because of the high level of functionality and customization afforded in
MailMate, settings become very important to restore functionality when a
major storage component is replaced.

There is a topic in the User Manual that discusses that topic. Have you
looked or tried to restore any of those settings, or the database? With
it you could have brought back your previous settings, even to a new
version.

You’ll find a topic in the Help Menu (or User Manual) discussing,
“How to Transfer MailMate Settings to another computer.” (MailMate
Help>Table of Contents>Rebuild Database).

Some you seem to have rebuilt manually. The sender folder assignments
not so much. If you don’t have such a backup, you will also need to
manually recreate those folder assignments.

Recommend you save your settings for future use with the procedure
described in the above and back them up as you would all your files. Use
the method described to reinstall them as needed when migrating to a new
storage medium (called erase and install in Mac terms, I like to
describe as a bare metal install).

Good luck.

Hello All,

After getting (so far) three CPU Panics after installing/using r5975 in
a release version of MacOS (13.5), admittedly though, not a 100%
proof/direct causation of all crashes, I feel a need to remove and walk
back MM to 1.14 (r5970), my last known, stable experimental version.

Hopefully this will end my cycle of strange cpu panic crashes.

I rarely get crashes now or in the past and have witnessed at least one
related directly while using MM 5975 (failing during use of the app). I
received no developer feedback to the Crash Reports from MacOS and no
acknowledgment/status of the Ticket presented to Benny. All were

Re: [MlMt] r5978

2023-09-01 Thread Henry Seiden

Steve,

Sorry to say, I cannot replicate what you’re reporting. But your issue
should be forwarded to Benny.

As to what I see, in my install of M-M, the menu when a message is
selected, (right click>Junk State>options) has **BOTH “Junk” and
“Not Junk”** checked! This is true fro any selected message in the
Inbox. So I would agree that is weird, since no junk is filtered in M-M.
In my case, it comes pretty close - having for years used SpamSieve for
junk mail filtering.

Here on my virtually unattended Mini, Apple Mail running SpamSieve 3.0
b4 (beta) on a MacMini 2020 M1 to accomplish with Remote Training. That
lets other machines drop suspected spam that get through easily. I’m
told the new SpamSieve build 3.0 supports MailMate, however. Michael
Tsai (developer of SpamSieve) says he will continue to support MailMate.

If there is a final imminent release of MailMate, I may try it using
SpamSieve, but that seems way off.

My set up on the MacMini does all the filtering outside all other device
applications (both for mobile devices using standard iOS Mail apps and
other Mac like the MBP, both mobile and desktop connections.

So, I don’t use MM for ANY junk filtering. It can, I suppose, but it
simply isn’t worth my time to try, plus a clean inbox is much too
valuable to give up what works.

Take your point on experimental builds 1.14(r5978), though. R5975 seemed
a bust having caused crashes on my machine (MBP2021 M1Pro) running MacOS
13.5.1 (22G90) and apparently others, too.

I’m sure our clever member could give some further hints on how to use
count for threads in a (smart or other) mailbox since a thread is simply
a particular mail. As to attaching a count to the parent email, (which

There is a shortcut also, ^⌥⌘D (control+option+command+D) to turn

I did come across the Viewer/Fonts/Size parameter, but I didn't
anticipate it affecting the message view as well. I set it to 25 and
it seems to be working fine.

However, I've noticed some minor layout glitches in HTML emails when
using 150% compared to resizing via Font Size 25.

Nonetheless, this has been a significant improvement. Thanks a lot!

Hi All,

For those interested in a new build it was found to be posted by Benny

Note that these are **not yet** classified by the developer as “Test

You can revert back to your previous install by keeping a backup of the
app and deleting this one. It uses the same settings files previous
installed (but don’t if it updates them further). It works on at least
the current release of MacOS 14.1(23B74) to the extent of the features I
use. You’ll be able to see in the revision history what has changed
going back to what you had installed.

Some people take the thought that if the current app meets my needs,
then why go to a new one. Why indeed! No rush. Others like to see the
new stuff.

Good luck and thanks for moving this app forward, Benny!

Jo,

You create an app specific password in iCloud.com. However, you need to
enable two-factor first. Then you can create the app-specific password
there. Maybe that’s why things are different with the changes you
made?

Here’s an [Apple Support document on implementing app-specific

All version of MailMate have no problem using the third party passwords
once updated in iCloud. If you changed your base password in iCloud that
is the first place to look to confirm its settings are still in place.
Usually they stay put, I have not seen them change for this reason, but

Brock,

I replicated what you did in my Experimental Build r5975 installation
with two unread messages (one was yours) showing in my Inbox. Works fine
to advance to the next subsequent message. Reads fine after changes, as
it was set. Seems like any group selection works in a similar fashion
for me.

Did not check in advance, but it seems that that this would be the
desired (default) action, one previously set as default. But I’m not
sure of that. I do note that this setting keeps the unread status of the
message as it was set (there is a 30 sec time delay, so it is expected).

The logic with this enabled (then, selecting archive icon) moves and
locates the icon down the list, until the end of the selection, then
moves upwards to move the remaining, selected items one at a time or a
group at a time depending on your selection grouping.

Does anyone know what the default setting is supposed to be, if
different and why?

Here’s what I set from Terminal:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmMessagesOutlineMoveStrategy
-string "unreadOrNext"

I have not changed this setting recently, but I set it again before
posting this, and I checked it by reading it back to make sure it is
set. Deleting a message or archiving one always moved the selection to
the next unread message either immediately above or below it in the
list, but now in 5975, it regularly selects a read message when an
unread one is adjacent.

Re: [MlMt] r5975 Experimental option Update[first look]

2023-08-25 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello All,

First look at experimental version 5975 updated from 5970 (changing no
settings) and using the correspondence view, 3 pane display. So far (1
hour of use):
* No issues crashing (cause of concern to others, but I never
experienced in Ventura or Sonoma OS).
* Still have a previously report column issue with the message layout
where the date column is compressed too small by defalkt and has trouble
being widened since it’s the rightmost column. I have to drag it
around a lot to get it to even display a date. The truncating operation
of that column CUTS OFF the date portion completely, so dragging the
column is a multi-step process. If Benny wants a video of it, I can do.
It’s been like this a long time and I suspect it goes back too the
latest beta depending on settings.
* No problem composing messages in my current settings migrated as
above.

Re: [MlMt] app specific password??

2023-08-14 Thread Henry Seiden

Jo,

What I can’t tell in iCloud (without doing what you did -
removing/replacing the original password) is when you did that did the
old app-specific password(s) disappear. I suspect they did, but don’t
know for sure if that’s so. I found a post in [Apple Community
discussions](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252417570) that a user
says that it is so. So based on your experience and theirs, I would
agree with you.

It sounds like you have now created a new app-specific password, it’s
the only one there and it exists and you have named it. So, that should
be it. The thing is the **ONLY** place to see/confirm it is on the
iCloud.com web site.

You won’t see it in the Mac (System Settings) or iPhone settings. So I
believe you are correct that any previous settings were cleared as a
result of your password change. If you care to complain about that
possible issue, the place to go is Apple Support.

And you should of course make note of it. Why? Because in MM(MailMate)
it won’t be visible either (security) even though it can be copied as
a setting to use if migrating to another machine in the future.

By the continue on your device(s) message in iCloud it’s telling you
to use the device needed and the application on that device for that
password. Doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong so far. So let’s
look at MM, where of course you’ve already entered the new
*app-specific password* appropriately.

Going to MM… The menu Edit IMAP setting should indicate whether that
password is now working for you there. In MM you input that
*app-specific* password **INSTEAD** of the regular iCloud account
password for MM’s IMAP Server and SMTP Server. Have you tried that?
Sometimes if MM has trouble it will pop up the warning screen for the
password to enter. You can enter it there or in Edit IMAP settings.

Within MM’s edit IMAP settings, don’t forget to Apply your changes.

How to check in MM that all is well? Click the edit subscriptions button
to see if the screen populates with the server mailboxes showing (tells
you that MM is communicating with the iCloud server). If it is, then all
your mail should be showing up. Please confirm.

Re: [MlMt] remove text from incoming/outgoing emails

2022-04-22 Thread Henry Seiden

Hi Martin,

Looks like the message was purposely placed in the body of messages at
the server level, for a reason.

Seems to me that they want to discourage use of their servers,
Pratt.edu, for non-company uses, heavily filtering both incoming and
outgoing messages, hence the attachments to both the IMAP and SMTP
sides.

IMO, this could be solved by using a personal (free) account and/or a
discussion with your server admins.

FWIW, earlier versions of MailMate actually defaulted to listing

Hello Benny and all at MailMate Developers,

I have a suggestion which occurred to me from a comment in the Users

I can’t find any way to search for a word or group of words in the

check for an edition a given trouble was resolved in, or a myriad of

Select all, copy, paste in your favorite text app, and search.

How about just opening this with whichever web browser you prefer:

file:Applications/MailMate.app/Contents/Resources/ReleaseNotes.html

It will retain all the formatting, although Text Edit might, too. And
it may be bookmarked. The file has been in this same location for

Re: [MlMt] Regex search?

2022-04-10 Thread Henry Seiden

My suggestion to you is use SpamSieve.

It’s the BEST app for filtering out spam hands down. A time-saver and
headache saver to doing it yourself. I use it in Mail.app running on a
drone machine set up (MacMini M1, 2020). You can find the details in his
[extensive user manual application online
pages](https://c-command.com/spamsieve/manual#setting-up-other-mail-c).
that also runs all my backup and has network-accessible storage for two
machines on the home network 24x7.

Using the training filtering methods there, there’s no trouble
filtering all junk from my Inbox. I have not taken the time to find out
if and how well SpamSieve filters with MailMate by itself, simply
because I have not found it necessary to so.

Spam just doesn’t get to the drone client machine running MailMate. I
understand that Benny’s interface for SpamSieve is supposed to be
pretty good (according to SpamSieve’s developer, Michael Tsai). I
can’t say enough about Michael’s [support of that app and others he
developed](http://c-command.com).

Re: [MlMt] How to reliably move incoming messages to separate mailboxes?

2023-11-08 Thread Henry Seiden

Hi Pierre,

Given your experience, I can see this working if for example, you move
message within MailMate only. I **usually** move them that way, but like
not always to the Archive Mailbox per account. Also this not a “Smart
Mailbox”.

So it doesn’t seem to be worthwhile trying, unless there is a rule to
first move a message to a temporary mailbox, then apply the setting(s)
desired, E.G. color, then move it back to the original place. It may get
the setting wiped out at that point anyway.

So, in short while it’s nice to colorize the email by a color code
similar to what was applied to the icon of a standard mailbox (which
still works, BTW), but no longer apparently, to the message contents
itself.

Mail does seem to allow the contents to be colored - both the background
and characters when placed in the spam folders. How do I know this, you
may ask? SpamSieve uses the techniques of coloration to apply it to
aspects of the email (subject) IN THE MESSAGE LIST. That coloration is
NOT reflected in the same message and the same folder in MM however.

Just giving some background for your issue. Frankly, the coloration
mentioned here is not of great enough interest to pursue it further for
me. Seems like it could be done, but don’t know the reasoning not the
the issues. Just providing some hints for your background study. Good
Luck.

Hi,

With the elimination in recent versions of MailMate of support for the
“hidden” feature for colouring messages in the inbox message list
using a file called Styles.plist, I have been told by Benny that I
need to use smart mailboxes to apply colours to messages in a combined
message list.

My problem is that I can only see doing this in a practical fashion by
using rules to automatically move incoming messages to specific
(coloured) mailboxes and then by using a smart mailbox to combine the
contents of these various coloured mailboxes into a single message
list, with each message retaining the colour of its parent mailbox.

HOWEVER, this only works if my rules for moving incoming messages to
specific mailboxes works reliably for all messages. But I am finding
that it doesn’t work reliably. Sometimes incoming messages stay in
the inbox even though they do meet the criteria of the rule that is
supposed to move them.

My impression is that this might be because the move action only works
when messages actually “arrive” in the inbox, and I am assuming
that this “arriving” state is not always detected because incoming
messages might arrive in my inbox during a time when MailMate is NOT
checking for new mail and one of my other devices (iPad, iPhone) IS
checking for new mail, so that the arrival of these messages is not
detected by MailMate. (I can “force” MailMate to move these missed
messages to their destination by manually moving them to another box
and then back to the inbox, but obviously I cannot keep doing this
every time MM misses one.)

Is that really what’s going on? Or is there another reason why
sometimes incoming messages are NOT moved to their respective
mailboxes even though they do meet the criteria of the rule that is
supposed to move them?

If my theory is correct, how can I ensure that incoming messages are
ALWAYS moved from the inbox to their destination mailbox reliably,
regardless of whether they “arrive” first on my iPhone or iPad
before showing up in MailMate on my Mac?

Apologies if I am misunderstanding something obvious.

Pierre

Re: [MlMt] Message colouring hierarchy?

2023-11-09 Thread Henry Seiden

Pierre,

Here’s my manual workflow to handle my mail in 10 accounts in a single
session, runs about 10-20 min depending on items counts:
1. Manually read and mark as read from the generic All Inboxes (smart)
mailbox. I do not have the option to auto-mark mail when opened as read
for security reasons (do not want to auto-mark when opened).
2. Move read items to Archive as needed, before or after reply, as
suitable.

3. Delete the rest whether junk or copied Mailing List items.
4. Compose new mail or reply to inbound mail:
a. Send immediately (goes to sent mail folder).
	b. Save to Draft folder which goes to relative account’s folder upon
saving the draft item.
	c. Save to draft as future delivery (setting a future delivery date),
which goes to the relative account’s draft (smart) folder.

d. Inbox is left empty for future incoming mail.

Working on use of colored mailboxes as prompts for handled mail in MM.
Will sorted mail from an iOS device share the coloring scheme? Will find
out soon…

Re: [MlMt] MailMate, Gmail, & OAUTH2 verification

2022-05-20 Thread Henry Seiden

Hi Antonio,

That was likely and either/or scenario, fully played out by Google.
I’ve been using OAUTH2 for several accounts on Google. Others -
iCloud(Apple), Outlook(MS), Yahoo have new methods of verifying accounts
with SSL. Both adapt fairly well to email clients like MailMate for me.

Yahoo! has one quirk I wish Benny would fix in MM. Don’t know if
it’s related, but what happens is that Yahoo cannot verify the account
if the laptop is moved to a new locale or IP address (not always a
different router). It fails authorization/recognition by the server.
Then requires me to take that account off line and re-register it (log
it back in). Yahoo becomes happy again, until the next time.

Benny, care to comment about this one and how you want me to report it
as a bug? I’ve been seeing in all 1.14 releases tried on this server
only, including Test Builds for a while now. Currently on 1.14 r5895,
MacOS 12.1.3 (Monterey).

FWIW, Christian, I have not had this issue, ever.

I would have done what you did, if I had. As to your concern over nuked

status of the server using Mail.app immediately.

If AFTER a search in MM is complete check in the sidebar where you are.
Sometime the display of messages will be blank because of the search
conditions are showing nothing, so you’ll need to hit cancel if the
search window isn’t cleared.

Can’t imagine a program like MM nuking email on your server, but I

iCloud similarly uses 3ᴿᴰ party app passwords in their (Apple ID)

Randall,

I get it. Also somewhat problematic as to both, the flag and importance
are shared in one column, as are status (unread, forwarded and replied).
Could it be that those shared columns are in some ways more important,
hence larger?

Since Benny and his team have chosen to include so much flexibility, not
sure about all of that flexibility being necessary but if it is, I would
agree that those leftmost could be in some way more adjustable than they
are (currently neither in size of the icon nor column widths, though
they are draggable in position).

As said previously, in my perfect world the particular sizes of those
icons is good as is. Particularly, the rightmost column, signaling only
an attachment. From what you say, I think you have no objection to that?

How do you enable importance, BTW?

  - Improved integration with Contacts when using smart mailboxes

Stephen,

Any idea what is going on in Preside? I sent in a support request to
them about an issue with Google Mail (gmail).

I tried it with my Google (gmail) account and it was a bust. Preside
refused to accept the OAUTH login info from Google and quit at that step

So, I’m kinda done there.

Re: [MlMt] Bcc list

2022-07-04 Thread Henry Seiden

Randall,

Thought of another solution, one I use regularly to include a list of
BCC Contacts. It works well for me in an email. It is outside MM but I
find it useful if I need to send to a list of contacts.

I use Busy Contact as my contact manager (instead of the built-in
Contacts.app). I has a function to select a contact group using a
scripted “filter” function and to select those filtered contact as a
group to send a BCC. This function works perfectly integrated into any
mail client and also in MailMate. So it opens up ANY contact or group
you want to regularly BCC.

So my process is:
1. Select the Contacts you want to BCC first in Busy Contacts. Use a
pre-built filter or just manually select them.
2. Once selected, send them to a BCC email from the Menu>File>Send Blind
Email.
3. The email page is opened with the selected contact’s email address
(first one in case of multiple emails) in the default email client app
in any version of MacOS.

4. Type the email and send.

That’s my answer. I irregularly do a 70 member group email to a
contact group as BCC (from among, in my case, thousands of potential
contacts). Sounds like what you may be seeking. You can filter among a
huge parameter of contact fields and/or attributes. You might want a
free trial from [Busy Contacts](busymac.com).

Just my 2¢.

Re: [MlMt] SpamSieve Question

2022-06-29 Thread Henry Seiden

All,

FYI, this is not an answer to using MM with SpamSieve, however I do have
slightly off-topic suggestions and comments to two questions posed here
about junk mail filtering:
1. Try contacting Benny directly posting suggestions to the address for
that stating which version you use and requesting the suggestions you
made here.
2. If you have a spare computer to use as a SpamSieve server for your
IMAP (or MIME) accounts you can do as I have done pre-MM. My Junk filter
running on Mail.app on MacMini M1 also serves as a net backup for local
backup and two other computers.
3. You should be aware that SpamSieve is a scripting based application.
It uses a different set up from MailMate (code-based). That has and
continues to successfully service all my computers’ backups and all my
accounts junk mail filtering very, very well. The developer of SpamSieve
doesn’t support M-M, but does support his app standing alone on Mail.
4. [Michael Tsai’s developer
support](https://c-command.com/spamsieve/) for SpamSieve and updates for
updates with new versions of MacOS has been invaluable to keeping Mail,
MacOS happy with SpamSieve. Highly recommended.

NB, Not a sales pitch for anything, just sharing some background and
user info that may prove helpful to anyone looking for junk filtering in
M-M and especially with incorporating SpamSieve. I have had continued
success using this approach, it was recommended to me by Michael.

Re: [MlMt] Font options - Underline missing

2022-07-08 Thread Henry Seiden

John,

Thanks for that info and explanation.

I thought something had changed (new versions, updates to Markdown,
etc.). I’m not desperate for Underline, just that it’s always been
missing, thought there were options, but no. I use that function only
occasionally.

FYI, if already rendered in a supporting app (Mail) the quality is
displayed and sent by MM.

Other non-mail Mac apps are not HTML based and do have those options.
That said, I can see why coding to HTML is needed for email.

FYI, I found a workaround for [Markdown,
here](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44840416/how-to-make-a-word-underline-in-markdown).
Also noted, a different Markdown is likely incompatible with M-M
(Markdown-it.js) and does support it.

[MlMt] Recent 1.14 Test Build 5903 and Contacts integration

2022-07-11 Thread Henry Seiden

Hi Benny,

I have noticed in prior test builds that there is a problem with
extracting email information into M-M for an email address in
MailMate’s Composer, To:, CC:, BCC: headers, of those Contact entries
sorted by Company. Just got and tried r5903.

Here’s an example:
1. A contact record is sorted by Company (the checkbox selected). There
is also a Name and a Company in the entry.
2. In MailMate, in Composer you enter that name information to attempt
to pull in the email of an addressee. Nothing is found. However, if you
instead enter the Company Name, then all entries with that Company Name
are found. Moreover the Company Name is treated as person’s name and
the last part of the Company name is parsed first.
3. When the box is checked, typing in MailMate finds occurrences of
Freron and MailMate. Attaching the contact card in question so you can
see the issue and possibly duplicate it.
4. If the contact card has no Company (first) checkbox entry, then the
name is found and the email address will be found. And the email heard
is properly populated and shown as above, “Name”
with a dropdown to select from the emails in the contact.
5. If the Company first box is NOT checked, MailMate will find the entry
and populate the email address either way (company or name).

So, is this the Apple bug in Contacts that you referred to in your notes
about r5903? If so, then it’s still the same result in this build as
it was before. If not, then I think this is a bug of a different sort,
relating to searching within MailMate for an email contact address with
the Company sorting checked in the entry. In my view the sorting of the
view should have nothing to do with the data found. Please advise.

[MlMt] Font options - Underline missing

2022-07-08 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello All,

Are there available options for font shortcuts that aren’t yet
implemented like a shortcut for underline. MacOS shortcut ⌘+U works
fine in Mail, but there is no working shortcut in MM r5902 using
standard fonts (Times New Roman, Comic Sans MS, Helvetica, etc.).

The underline adjustment (in M-M Menu>Format) that option is missing,
not shown, similarly, which explains that it isn’t working in a
shortcut. Guessing the menu options follow what is set up in the CLI.
Can it be reset?

Why?
