Any ideas about what I can write in a SQL select statement to select all the objects
in one layer that do not lie within an objects in the layer above. It seems top be so
straight forward to select those that lie within an object on the upper layer, so
presumably I am missing something

I have another column which contains lot, block, plan info for a town in the
format -b-ppp. I need to create 3 separate columns( lot, block, and
plan).
The problem is that Lot# varies from 0-5 digits, and Plan# varies from 3-4.

You may add a Character type column named Full_address for example and then
use the update column function from the "Table" menu and specify the num
column + " " + string column

I am klark, and I believe that your problem is solved of the following way.
1. uninstall the mapinfo
2. reinitiates the PC in way MSDOS
3. in prompt keys in SCANREG / RESTORE
4. chooses the registry but present before happening the problem and restauralo
5. reinstala reinitiates
