I found myself reacting fairly strongly to this suggestion and
personally, I would vote _NO_.
As I stepped back and looked at this option, I had to chuckle
as I reread the 'we' in the subject
Starting back with NT Server 4.0's Option Pack, as well as
Windows 2000 Server, you can create an NNTP server that doesn't allow for
anonymous posts. It uses standard authentication similar to
IIS.

I would vote against.
Many have given valid reasons for this standpoint, and I agree with
them.
The current system works fine, and we are not that many.
A newsgroup approach would only split our efforts and attention, not to
mention the cumbersome process of setting it up.

You will also have to consider, that a lot of us can participate in a
mailing-list but dosn't have access to news groups due to corporate policies
and/or server/firewall configurations

Newsgroups are posted for ALL to see and are routinely searched by spammers
