Short answer - Our GIS Group uses both, and I think it is not uncommon at
all.

Hello list,
Some recent discussions about the new ArcINFO 8 and what is and isn't a
'real' GIS have led me back to an old question. I thought I'd pose it here
and see what happens:
Q: What can ArcINFO do that MapInfo can not?
I haven't used AI in several years, and I've seen so many tools, ut
For Montana data, a fantastic resource is the state library NRIS...

We recently purchased the whole state PLSS from them in one nice file on CD
for about $50. You can also download pieces and patch them together

Hi Myles,
I have done this by the following methods:

Create a new layer called Catchment Poly or something similar and make it

Your MI add-on technical support person must have been thinking about

LAT column with Centroid(y), and the LONG column with centroid(x). Export a
copy of that table as delimited text. Open the text file, and create p
Hmmm...
I have to agree with most of your comments, but not the AV comparison.
First, you can't even save a color/style with an actual map object in AV -
it has to be thematically driven.
Second, in AV, 2click on layer legend to get Legend Editor, then 2click on

Hello List,
I have a question about SQL syntax for the proportion sum function. I
have a couple of polygon tables, one of airspace and the other of land
use. I'm trying to calculate acreage of land use classes underneath the
airspace polygons. What I need is the proportion sum of the area of

Thank you for your responses to my proportion sum question.
The answer is to use AreaOverlap() instead of proportion sum. It was
right under my nose. Just goes to show, when you get stuck staring at
something for a long time, you just might want to step back and look at
alternative approaches.
