The head of the NY State Nurses Association sent out an email telling a
nurse who complained about lack of ppe's to "shut the f__k up". And this
union is supposed to be oh-so-different and wonderful. I guess not.

[Marxism] [SUSPICIOUS MESSAGE] Peter Dreier, Bhaskar Sunkara, and the Green Party | Louis Proyect: The Unrepentant Marxist

On April 28th, a 71-year old professor named Peter Dreier lit into
Bashkar Sunkara in The Nation magazine with the kind of ferocity that
made you wonder if the Jacobin editor had co-produced “Planet of the
Humans”. Titled “WTF Is Jacobin’s Editor Thinking in Voting Green?,”
Dreier reacted to an April 22nd Tweet that was probably not intended to
generate any kind of controversy.

You can even describe the Tweet as damning with faint praise since it
disavows support for the Greens a party and uses most of its 280
characters reminding his readers to vote for Democrats.

Like many other liberals, Dreier repeats the same arguments that have
been heard ad infinitum ever since Ralph Nader was blamed for allowing
George W. Bush to be elected in 2000. Rather than holding Al Gore up to
the scrutiny he deserved as Bill Clinton’s neoliberal sidekick, people
like The Nation’s Eric Alterman and the singularly loathsome Todd Gitlin
viewed blamed Nader for being a “spoiler”.

Thanks, Louis. I am deeply honored and am blushing. The move to Marx occurred
when I was a fellow in Law and Humanities at Harvard Law School in 1975-76.
The fellowship meant I could audit any undergraduate course, and I gleefully
took every one (not in science) taught by a Marxist. This, plus their reading,
plus friendship with many graduate students and teaching assistants, moved me
onto the road towards Marxism. It greatly helped also that liberalism was (is)
such a failure, at democracy, at equality, and at telling the truth. And here
I still am. Wythe

Wythe Holt

Wythe is too modest to mention his background so I will do it for him.
It makes his transition all the more interesting.

Wythe Holt

Professor Holt served on the Law School Faculty [of the University of
Alabama] from 1966 through 2005. He received his B.A. from Amherst
College and his J.D. and Ph.D. (in American history) from the University
of Virginia. In law school he was elected to Order of the Coif and
served as Virginia Editor of the Virginia Law Review. Within the
Alabama Law School, Professor Holt received one of the first four Chairs
awarded, and is now University Research Professor of Law Emeritus.

Professor Holt taught and published in the fields of federal
jurisdiction, conflict of laws, trusts and estates, and future
interests, while his primary field of teaching and publication was
American legal history, particularly the history of American labor law.
In retirement his chief production has included books on the Whiskey
Rebellion of 1794, the early history of the American federal court
system, and a Civil War battle which took place near his hometown of
Hampton, Virginia. At the University of Alabama, Professor Holt also
taught or co-taught courses in the English, History, American Studies,
African-American Studies (as it was then), New College, and Criminal
Justice departments of the College of Arts and Sciences. He served as a
visiting professor at the law schools of George Washington University,
West Virginia University, and the University of Miami, and was a
visiting member of the faculty of history at the University of Virginia.
He has also served as a visiting lecturer or professor at Mekelle
University in Ethiopia, Fribourg University in Switzerland, and the
Australian National University in Canberra.

Professor Holt was a founding member and early Secretary of the American
Society for Legal History. He has served as Secretary of the Southwest
Labor Studies Association and as a member of the American Legal Studies
Association. He also served in the University of Alabama Faculty Senate
for many years, being elected its President for one term by his peers there.

Having The Flu And With Nothing Else To Do
by Charles Bukowski

I read a book about John Dos Passos and according to
the book once radical-communist
John ended up in the Hollywood Hills living off investments
and reading the
Wall Street Journal

this seems to happen all too often.

what hardly ever happens is
a man going from being a young conservative to becoming an
old wild-ass radical

however:
young conservatives always seem to become old
conservatives.
it's a kind of lifelong mental vapor-lock.

but when a young radical ends up an
old radical
the critics
and the conservatives
treat him as if he escaped from a mental
institution.

such is our politics and you can have it
all.

keep it.

sail it up your
ass.

Housing is not a major problem. Although journalists have trouble
keeping track of the bewildering array of mansions purchased by
America’s billionaires, Jeff Bezos reportedly owns 14 homes, including a
newly-acquired $165 million Beverly Hills mansion. Another of his lavish
dwellings, located in an exclusive section of Washington, DC, contains
11 bedrooms and 25 bathrooms. Although Mark Zuckerberg apparently
possesses only 10 homes, Larry Ellison has bought dozens of incredibly
expensive mansions and real estate properties, plus (at a price of $300
million) a Hawaiian island.

Mainstream commentators in the US, both liberal and conservative, tend
to portray the South as a region whose culture makes it a permanent
bastion of reactionary, racist, and anti-labor politics. Michael
Goldfield’s new book, The Southern Key: Race, Class and Radicalism in
the 1930s and 1940s (Oxford University Press, 2020), challenges these
truisms, revealing the possibilities for a racially egalitarian
industrial unionism in the South during and after the Great Depression
and how the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) squandered those
opportunities. Spectre’s Charlie Post interviews Mike Goldfield about
his provocative contribution to discussions of race and class in the US.

s a famous philosopher, Slavoj Zizek is a rare creature. Unlike
Socrates, to achieve this impossible status, Zizek did not have to die
from a final drink of hemlock at the hands of his tormentors. Au
contraire! Zizek has been a celebrity and symbol, analyst and joker, all
rolled into one for over two decades now. His philosophy is as
performative as it is prolific. Taking an upside-down view, only to
point out the absurdity of contemporary culture, signature style. In
memorable phrases like ‘alcohol-free beer’ or ‘fat-free chocolate’, he
forced us to re-evaluate virtues that masked a guilt or an evil.

In the current coronacrisis, the slump is accompanied by high global
debt, both public, corporate and household. The Institute of
International Finance, a trade body, estimates that global debt, both
public and private, topped $255tn at the end of 2019. That is $87tn
higher than at the onset of the 2008 crisis and it is undoubtedly going
to be very much higher as a result of the pandemic. As Robert Armstrong
of the FT put it: “the pandemic poses especially big economic hazards to
companies with highly leveraged balance sheets, a group that now
includes much of the corporate world. Yet the only viable short-term
solution is to borrow more, to survive until the crisis passes. The
result: companies will hit the next crisis with even more precarious
debt piles.”

I am reminded of Don Fitz's review of Ozzie Zehner's 'Green illusions:
The dirty secrets of clean energy and the future of environmentalism',
which was also published in LINKS here in Australia in 2014.
http://links.org.au/node/3750
In it , Fitz wrote this, which I agree with:

:"At several points the author (ie:Zehner) implies, but does not
clearly state, what might be the fundamental theses for building an
environmental society:
1. Reducing CO2 enough to avoid environmental catastrophe requires a
massive (not a small) reduction in the use of fossil fuels.
2. Such a reduction in use of fossil fuels requires a large decrease
in industrial production.
3. Current capitalist society is so permeated by the production of
useless and destructive stuff that it is possible to decrease
industrial production simultaneous with an increase in the quality of
life globally."

Fitz has pursued the perspective in other articles he has
written...like this one: 'Should socialists support degrowth?'
https://climateandcapitalism.com/2013/03/25/should-socialists-support-degrowth-2/
Don Fitz: “Rather than being dismissive toward ongoing struggles
against growth, socialists should enthusiastically participate and
point to their anti-capitalist essence.”

Nonetheless, it seems to me, that what Fitz is arguing is a very long
way from the politics advocated in 'Planet of the Humans'...even if we
take into account the developments (significant changes in costs and
efficiencies) in wind and solar technology over the past decade.
I don't want to enter a debate about the film as there is plenty of
that to go around. But de-growthing the economy has to be recognised
as an ecosocialist essential and you can't do that without replacing
capitalism otherwise you fall victim to populationist arguments.
