Dick Nichols, Barcelona

By some estimates, more than 1 million people came out across Catalonia on
September 11 for Catalonia’s national day (the *Diada*) to show their
support for Catalan sovereignty and — for most present — for Catalan
independence from the Spanish state.

For a region of about 7.5 million people, it was an impressive turn out for
the fifth annual mass mobilisation for Catalan statehood since 2012. The
demonstrations were once again organised by the Catalan National Assembly
(ANC) and the Catalan cultural association Omnium Cultural — confirming
that this social movement remains easily the largest in Europe.

Posing a threat to the Spanish state, it will become an increasingly
critical issue for a European Union reeling under the blows of Brexit, its
brutal handling of refugees and its economic stagnation.

For how long can the rulers of the EU maintain the fiction that the Catalan
national question is simply a domestic issue for the Spanish state while
Spain’s rulers deny Catalonia a Scottish-style referendum?

While “Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four”, a
documentary that opened today at the Cinema Village in NY on the
outrageous conviction of four lesbians in San Antonio–three of whom were
Mexican-American–for sexually assaulting one of the women’s two young
nieces, seems to have little in common with “Snowden”, they overlap one
very important issue, namely the power of film to raise awareness over
the rights of the accused whether they are obscure working-class figures
accused of sex crimes or a whistle-blower known across the planet either
as a hero or a traitor.

“Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four” mostly consists
of interviews with the four women and their relatives as well as the
lawyers who got involved with their defense. Among them is an old friend
and comrade named Jeff Blackburn who was best known for his yeoman work
in defending the 39 African-Americans in Tulia, Texas that were victims
of a drug sting. At one point Blackburn states that trials such as these
are not decided in the courtroom but in the world at large when a
mobilization to change the public’s mind is mounted. That has been the
case with the San Antonio Four, the Black men who were victimized in
Tulia and before that all of the major political trials of the past 100
years when dedicated lawyers like Jeff, William Kunstler and Michael
Ratner proved their mettle.

I should have said something about this. I decided that I couldn't
impose a ban on "lesser evil" voting for Clinton because it is
impossible to block discussion of the 2016 elections since they are just
too dominant in the news and analysis on the left to ignore. I certainly
resent Clay making the same points over and over again but at least we
can assume that after November 2nd, he'll move on to other matters.

For those who favor the Clinton model of mass murder, oppression, imperialism,

The Duran reported earlier today, as one of the few media organizations to

A delegation from the US Peace Council (USPC) has recently returned to the US
from a fact finding mission to Syria.
The members spent 6 days meeting with Syrian Government Officials including,
President Assad, Union Leaders, Government Opposition Members as well as Civil
& Business Leaders, NGO’s, Charities and Universities.
The delegation stated that each member paid their own way and that the Syrian
Government allowed them to meet whomever they wanted.
They issued their report and held a press conference Press conference at the UN
on 9th August 2016.
Madelyn Hoffman, Executive Director of New Jersey Peace Action, Member of the
Syria Delegation at the 17:15:

“This is not a civil war in Syria. That’s probably the first thing we heard,
and we heard it over and over again.
It is not President Assad against his own people. It is President Assad and the
Syrian people, all together, in unity, against outside forces, outside
mercenary forces, terror organisations, the names change everyday or every
other day, to try to protect their identity, and maybe keep the connection
between the country that funded it and that group, kind of a little bit more
nebulous, but there are groups, mercenary forces, supported by Qatar, Saudi
Arabia, Turkey, United States, and underneath it, Israel, the state of Israel.
And these outside mercenary forces are the ones that are terrorising the Syrian
people, and are attempting to divide the Syrian people.”

One is…That while the United States would like to divide the Syrians up, by

There wasn’t a Syrian we talked to who would accept that.
We spoke to the Grand Mufti, and he said, ‘People ask me how many Muslims there
are in Syria?’ and his response is always 23 million. That’s is the population

And when we talk to the bishop of one of the Orthodox Churches, he answered the

We will not allow ourselves to be divided up the way the United States has

(Maybe it would help if she wasn't modeling her campaign on Mitt Romney's.)

NY Times, Sept. 16 2016
Hillary Clinton Takes Aim at Voters Drifting Toward Third Party
By JONATHAN MARTIN and AMY CHOZICK

WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton and her Democratic allies, unnerved by the
tightening presidential race, are making a major push to dissuade
disaffected voters from backing third-party candidates, and pouring more
energy into Rust Belt states, where Donald J. Trump is gaining ground.

With Mrs. Clinton enduring one of the rockiest stretches of her second
bid for the presidency, her campaign and affiliated Democratic groups
are shifting their focus to those voters, many of them millennials, who
recoil at Mr. Trump, her Republican opponent, but now favor the
Libertarian nominee, Gary Johnson, or the Green Party candidate, Jill Stein.

While still optimistic that the race will turn decisively back in Mrs.
Clinton’s favor after the debates, leading Democrats have been alarmed
by the drift of young voters toward the third-party candidates.

The principal “super PAC” supporting Mrs. Clinton’s candidacy,
Priorities USA Action, has concluded from its polling and other research
that the reluctance to embrace the Democratic nominee among those who
intensely dislike Mr. Trump is not going away and must be confronted.

“We’ll be launching a multimillion-dollar digital campaign that talks
about what’s at stake and how a vote for a third-party candidate is a
vote for Donald Trump, who is against everything these voters stand
for,” said Justin Barasky, a strategist for Priorities USA.

Mrs. Clinton may also get an assist from one Democrat who has been
largely quiet about the race, but can testify to the importance of
resisting the third-party temptation: former Vice President Al Gore. Her
staff has had conversations with aides to Mr. Gore about bringing him
onto the campaign trail to emphasize the importance of supporting Mrs.
Clinton if they want to make progress on combating climate change.

“I can assure you from personal experience that every vote counts,” Mr.
Gore wrote in an email to The New York Times on Thursday, after a new
CBS/New York Times poll showed Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Trump virtually
tied. “The stakes are high for so many Americans. So I will vote for
Hillary Clinton and I strongly encourage others to vote for her as well.”

More immediately, the Clinton campaign on Saturday will dispatch two
political figures who enjoy a passionate following among young liberals,
Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, to Ohio, where public
polls show Mrs. Clinton has slipped into a statistical dead heat with
Mr. Trump. And Mrs. Clinton will deliver a speech aimed at millennial
voters on Monday in Philadelphia before campaigning in Ohio and giving
an economic address in Florida later in the week.

Democrats say that if the race is close in its final stretch, some of
the voters who do not want to see Mr. Trump elected may shift on their
own accord to Mrs. Clinton to prevent a Trump presidency. But after
spending much of the summer hammering Mr. Trump, through both ads and
stump speeches, it appears Mrs. Clinton has convinced many voters that
Mr. Trump is not qualified to be president but has failed to win them
over to her own candidacy.

On Thursday, she seemed to take aim at their lingering doubts.

“From now until Nov. 8, everywhere I go I’m going to talk about my ideas
for our country,” Mrs. Clinton told reporters on Thursday in Greensboro,
N.C., as she returned to the campaign trail for the first time since
revealing she had pneumonia after nearly collapsing Sunday at a Sept. 11
memorial event.

At the same time, the Clinton campaign will try to more directly address
the pocketbook concerns of blue-collar voters, particularly in Rust Belt
states, where Mr. Trump has appeal.

In Ohio, for example, the Clinton campaign has opened 54 offices aimed
at turning out the vote. But three public polls this week showed Mr.
Trump holding a narrow lead there, and prominent Clinton supporters in
Ohio said the former secretary of state needs to make clear what she
will do for working-class people.

“The more people hear about what she’s proposing, the more inclined
they’ll say, ‘Maybe she’s not my first pick, but she’s got a plan that
is going to help us,’” said Representative Tim Ryan, a Democrat from the
Youngstown area.

[Marxism] Fwd: Carrie Rickey: A Subtler Oliver Stone Is Back in Top Form With ‘Snowden’ - Film Review - Truthdig

In “Citizenfour,” Laura Poitras’ riveting documentary about Edward
Snowden, the whistleblower quietly observes that it would be a mistake
to make him the focus of his 2013 revelations of the breadth and depth
of the National Security Agency’s surveillance of civilians. In other
words, don’t blame the messenger—blame the NSA for reading your email
messages.

Yet Oliver Stone’s “Snowden,” starring a ghostly Joseph Gordon-Levitt,
proves that focusing on the intelligence contractor himself is not a
mistake. As subtly drawn as it is politically urgent, “Snowden” is a
very good film with a phenomenal performance by Gordon-Levitt at its
center. Movie and performance are forceful precisely because they make
palpable the subject’s growing moral revulsion at the extent of U.S.
surveillance. Likewise his shock at how some of his superiors view intel
as a gambit in what resembles a video game that one of them calls, “You
track ‘em, we whack ’em.”

“A director makes only one movie in his life. Then he breaks it up and
makes it again,” said filmmaker Jean Renoir, who could have been
describing the man who made “Snowden.” Like the best Stone
films—“Platoon,” “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Wall Street”—“Snowden”
is the story of a young idealist who suffers a moral crisis compounded
by Oedipal fury against the father figure in whom he has lost faith.

Marxmail subscriber Andrew Stewart continues in a fact-free mode:

Presidents Putin and Xi, despite their shortcomings, have positioned
themselves as opponents of the 1% through their fiscal policies while
Obama has consolidated their stranglehold of the international economy.
It bears mentioning also that, given the history of Soviet outreach to
the postcolonial world, the notion of Russian “imperialism” in its
sphere of influence being somehow akin to American gunboat diplomacy is
a laughable claim. No, the Syrian government invited the Russians to
maintain a naval base in that country just as the Cubans did during the
Cold War.

---

By the late 1990s, the business community that the Asads had created in
their own image had transformed Syria from a semi-socialist state into a
crony capitalist state par excellence. The economic liberalization that
started in 1991 had redounded heavily to the benefit of tycoons who had
ties to the state or those who partnered with state officials. The
private sector outgrew the public sector, but the most affluent members
of the private sector were state officials, politicians and their
relatives. The economic growth registered in the mid-1990s was mostly a
short-lived bump in consumption, as evidenced by the slump at the end of
the century. Growth rates that had been 5-7 percent fell to 1-2 percent
from 1997 to 2000 and beyond.

After Bashar al-Asad succeeded his father in 2000, the architects of
Syria’s economic policy sought to reverse the downturn by liberalizing
the economy further, for instance by reducing state subsidies. Private
banks were permitted for the first time in nearly 40 years and a stock
market was on the drawing board. After 2005, the state-business bonds
were strengthened by the announcement of the Social Market Economy, a
mixture of state and market approaches that ultimately privileged the
market, but a market without robust institutions or accountability.
Again, the regime had consolidated its alliance with big business at the
expense of smaller businesses as well as the Syrian majority who
depended on the state for services, subsidies and welfare. It had
perpetuated cronyism, but dressed it in new garb. Families associated
with the regime in one way or another came to dominate the private
sector, in addition to exercising considerable control over public
economic assets. These clans include the Asads and Makhloufs, but also
the Shalish, al-Hassan, Najib, Hamsho, Hambouba, Shawkat and al-As‘ad
families, to name a few. The reconstituted business community, which now
included regime officials, close supporters and a thick sliver of the
traditional bourgeoisie, effected a deeper (and, for the regime, more
dangerous) polarization of Syrian society along lines of income and region.

Successive years of scant rainfall and drought after 2003 produced
massive rural in-migration to the cities -- more than 1 million people
had moved by 2009 -- widening the social and regional gaps still
further. Major cities, such as Damascus and Aleppo, absorbed that
migration more easily than smaller ones, which were increasingly starved
of infrastructural investment. Provincial cities like Dir‘a, Idlib, Homs
and Hama, along with their hinterlands, are now the main battlegrounds
of the rebellion. Those living in rural areas have seen their
livelihoods gutted by reduction of subsidies, disinvestment and the
effects of urbanization, as well as decades of corrupt authoritarian
rule. The Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings motivated them to express
their discontent openly and together.
