Louis,          Here we have got an Indian version of Trumfff, complete with a
blank mind and senseless adventures. Amerinadians will not be any better off,
if they are deported to India. Our Truppfff and his RSS have got plans to
deport 170 million Muslims and many more millions of those 'anti-nationals' who
oppose Hindutva ideology to Pakistan. Pakistan's reaction is awaited.Vijaya

I don't trust Alexander Reid Ross. He banned me and a fellow Palestinian
activist after we started asking whether "antifa" was anti-Zionist or
not, as we thought it ought to be. Even some Israeli citizens publicly
call Israel "fascist". We began to wonder where he was coming from
ideologically and he lapsed into a long tirade about the meanings of
Zion. Thinking he may be a closet Zionist we kept probing but all of a
sudden he banned us from his FB page. As of 4:15 PM PST today I remain
"banned". You may notice that a lot of his critique is of The Left. I
conjecture that, because it is FROM THE LEFT that the most legitimate
criticism of Israel comes (Israel as a settler colonialist state), it is
not so easy to discredit by labeling it as anti-semitic which is how
many Zionists try to handle criticism. Correct me if I'm wrong. Does he
have other virtues which override his possibly closet Zionist leanings?

She stood head and shoulders above much of the British left in terms of
solidarity with the Irish national liberation struggle and she actually
understood the 1916 Rebellion rather better than some folks like Trotsky
(although Trotsky's position improved substantially over the next few
years):

I should mention that the other person interviewed Alexander Reid Ross

very good on these questions and it is striking that he and Draitser

I would add academics to the union staffers and nonprofit people. But I
think what really matters is that, in most of these cases, we're dealing
with people who came of age in the absence of an ongoing movement. There
are dogmatists of the worst sort there--the lesser-evil-doers, but there
are no restrictions as to what can be done.

I think the younger people who've joined the DSA have already gone beyond
Bernie, who's not joined. :-)

[Marxism] NEW BOOK: Reading 'Capital' Today: Marx after 150 Years

NEW FROM PLUTO PRESS:
Reading 'Capital' Today
Marx after 150 Years
Edited by Ingo Schmidt and Carlo Fanelli

Recent years have seen a surge of interest in Marxian political economy and
especially Marx’s great work Capital. 150 years after the book’s original
publication, are there readings of Capital that can help us find new
pathways to progressive or revolutionary change?

In this wide-ranging new volume, leading thinkers reflect on Capital’s
legacy, its limitations and its continuing relevance for today,
highlighting issues including ecology, gender, race, labour, communism, the
‘Third World’ and imperialism.

The contributors also aim to identify the connections between Capital and
various socialist projects of the past, and draw lessons from those
experiences that might contribute to the reinvention of socialist politics
today.

Contributors include: Silvia Federici, Ingo Schmidt, Carlo Fanelli, William
Pelz, Anej Korsika, Prabhat Patnaik, Paul Thompson, Chris Smith, Peter
Gose, Justin Paulson, Jeff Noonan, Hannah Holleman and Peter Hudis.

-
Ingo Schmidt is academic coordinator of the Labour Studies Program at
Athabasca University, Canada. His research focuses on international
political economy and labour movements. His recent books include Rosa
Luxemburg’s Accumulation of Capital (VSAVerlag, 2013) and The Three Worlds
of Social Democracy (Pluto Press, 2015).

Carlo Fanelli teaches in the Department of Politics and Public
Administration, Ryerson University, Canada. He is the author of Megacity
Malaise: Neoliberalism, Public Services and Labour in Toronto, and editor
of Alternate Routes: A Journal of Critical Social Research.
-

‘Reading 'Capital' Today addresses not only capital and labour, and early
experiments in socialism, but also questions of gender, ecology, and
imperialism. What we learn is that reading Marx’s Capital in the present as
history can renew our vision of a more egalitarian world beyond capitalism:
that of socialism in the twenty-first century.'
John Bellamy Foster, editor of Monthly Review

‘2017 is a good year for 'rethinking revolution' and the meaning of
capitalism. This book celebrates and interrogates Marx's Capital on its
150th anniversary for its meaning today, as the neoliberal
counterrevolution mutates into ever more grotesque political and economic
forms. For reading Marx in our time, Schmidt and Fanelli have gathered a
series of vital interventions on some of the most important theoretical and
political themes in Marx for the struggles that lie in front of us.’
Greg Albo, Political Science, York University

In a speech given by Andrzej Wajda to a conference on his work at the
University of Lodz in 2001, he spoke about the importance of a national
cinema. Given the near-hegemony of Hollywood, one might say that
national cinema has seen its day. In the post-WWII period, a number of
directors emerged who, paraphrasing Shelly, became the unacknowledged
legislators of their nation. Satyajit Ray in India, the Italian
neo-realists, Akira Kurosawa in Japan, Ingmar Bergman in Sweden and the
French auteurs, all were shaped by their experiences of WWII and their
hopes that cinema could help to form a new identity out of the ashes of
bombed cities and the mountains of skeletons left behind by the fighting.

For Wajda, the challenge was not just speaking for the hopes of the
Polish people but in helping to form a national identity that had been
suppressed since the early 1800s. In a subsequent CounterPunch article,
I will provide a guide to Wajda’s most important films that are
relatively easy to access as Video on Demand (VOD) but in order to make
sense of his work, it is essential to preface it with a brief overview
of Polish history in order for a left audience to properly grasp the
mission Wajda set for himself as a director.
