Comrades,

Sorry link to the article didn’t work. Here’s the AP story:

US duty free owners give millions to Israeli settlements
BY URI BLAU AND JOSEF FEDERMAN
Yesterday [July 1, 2019]
JERUSALEM (AP) — When travelers shop at dozens of duty free shops at airports
worldwide, they may be paying for more than a bottle of vodka or box of
chocolates.

The Falic family of Florida, owners of the ubiquitous chain of Duty Free
Americas shops, funds a generous and sometimes controversial philanthropic
empire in Israel that runs through the corridors of power and stretches deep
into the occupied West Bank.

An Associated Press investigation shows that the family has donated at least
$5.6 million to settler organizations in the West Bank and east Jerusalem over
the past decade, funding synagogues, schools and social services as well as
far-right causes considered extreme even in Israel.

The Falics’ philanthropy is not limited to the settlements and they support
many mainstream causes in the U.S. and Israel. However, they are a key example
of how wealthy U.S. donors have bolstered the contentious settlement movement.
Most of the world considers Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east
Jerusalem to be obstacles to peace, but Israel considers the territories
“disputed.”

The Falics support the ultranationalist Jewish community in Hebron, whose
members include several prominent followers of a late rabbi banned from Israeli
politics for his racist views, and whose movement is outlawed by the U.S. as a
terrorist organization. They back Jewish groups that covertly buy up
Palestinian properties in east Jerusalem, and they helped develop an
unauthorized settlement outpost in the West Bank. The outpost was later
retroactively legalized.

They have supported groups that are pushing for the establishment of a Third
Temple for Jews at the holiest and most contested site in the Holy Land. They
also have given more money than any other donor to Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, a strong supporter of settlements, and have donated to other leaders
of his Likud party.

In a response to AP questions through his lawyer, Simon Falic, who spoke on
behalf of the family, said Jews should be able to live anywhere in the Holy
Land, whether it’s Israel, Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem or the West Bank. He
condemned violence and claimed none of the groups he supports do anything
illegal under Israeli law.

“We are proud to support organizations that help promote Jewish life all over
the Land of Israel,” said Falic, whose business is based in Miami, Florida.
“The idea that the mere existence of Jewish life in any geographical area is an
impediment to peace makes no sense to us.”

However, the international community overwhelmingly believes the settlements
violate international law, which prohibits an occupying power from transferring
its own population into the territory it occupies.

Since capturing the West Bank and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war, the
settler population has grown to about 700,000 people, roughly 10% of Israel’s
Jewish population. In recent years, it has received a boost from Netanyahu’s
pro-settler government and from a far more tolerant attitude by President
Donald Trump, whose top Mideast advisers are longtime settlement supporters.

This growth has been fueled in part by fundraising arms for leading settlement
groups in the United States. According to a past investigation of U.S. tax
forms by the Israeli daily Haaretz, fundraising organizations in the U.S.
raised more than $230 million for settlement causes between 2009 and 2013 alone.

“Far-right foreign donors are a pillar of the settlement enterprise,” said
Peace Now, an Israeli anti-settlement watchdog group.

Other prominent settlement donors include casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, U.S.
billionaire Ira Rennert, American financier Roger Hertog and the U.S.
ambassador to Israel, David Friedman. Names of dozens of other lesser-known
donors adorn buildings, playgrounds and even park benches throughout the West
Bank.

But the Falics stand out for the wide scope of groups they support and their
close ties with leading Israeli politicians. Critics say activities billed as
harmless philanthropy have come at the expense of Palestinians.

Duty Free Americas is headed by three Falic brothers: Simon, Jerome and Leon.
The chain operates over 180 stores at airports and border crossings in the U.S.
and Latin America. Leon Falic told the trade publication TRBusiness that the
privately held company last year posted over $1.65 billion in sales.

The family has two main charitable organizations, the U.S.-based

In this video that examines the term "late capitalism" in the spirit of the
happily late William Safire, the narrator declares the possibility of a
socialist revolution as being far-fetched. No doubt The Atlantic will continue
to publish and support every measure to attempt to prevent one.

I probably deserve to be howled off this list for these questions but I
admit to have been living under a rock so here goes (sorry if these topics
have already been addressed - just point me to the posts):

1. If a discussion can be had without a long polemic about David North,
what do people here think about Google directing people away from
left-leaning sites as described in this open letter to Google from North:
http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2017/08/25/pers-a25.html

2. Is there a weekly summary of the left press, internet posts and left
journal articles available online?

3. What's the low-down on North? In brief, please. I really don't know and
haven't asked any comrades to spend time explaining this to me before. If
this is too contentious for this mail list, just send me some links to
articles you think I should read.

4. What's with the robotic, monotone newscasts and funereal music on the
WSWS podcasts?

At 50, El Teatro Campesino still speaks up for la Causa

By Lily Janiak

July 4, 2016 Updated: July 4, 2016 9:30pm

In San Juan Bautista, a town 37 miles northeast of Monterey, chickens still
roam downtown streets, and the air is thick with the scents of cabbage and
berry crops this time of year. The San Benito County town is most famous
for its Spanish mission, the only California mission to have never
interrupted its weekly Masses and the one that spelled doom for James
Stewart and Kim Novak in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.”

But if San Juan Bautista is best known as an iconic movie set, it’s also
home to the first major Chicano theater in the country: el Teatro Campesino
— Farmworkers Theater — which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.

ETC’s venue suits its town and its name. A former vegetable warehouse, the
theater’s administrative office still has a walk-in freezer, which, though
no longer active, offers the building’s only cool respite in the heat of
summer.

ETC’s main audience demographic is one that’s vastly underrepresented at
most Bay Area theaters: working- and middle-class Latino families. Parents
and children eat dinner together on the theater’s wide porch before shows,
and no one shushes the littlest ones as they make comments and ask
questions during a performance.

No one shushes the company’s emerging young artists either. Producing
Artistic Director Kinan Valdez, son of ETC founder Luis Valdez, has even
given Christy Sandoval and Emily Morales, two young artists at the theater,
the reins to direct and produce ETC’s anniversary show, “Viva la Causa.”

For them, ETC is an artistic oasis. “I hear the complaints in regional
American theater now,” Sandoval said. “There aren’t Chicanos being
represented on stage. It’s a nationwide thing. I’m fortunate. Why would we
ever leave this place? Every show we do here is entrenched in a beautiful,
rich culture. ... Every single piece has a lesson or message.”

On the picket lines

That artistic purpose dates back to the company’s origins. Founded in 1965
during the Delano grape strike, ETC helped organize the Central Valley’s
grape pickers into the United Farm Workers union. Under the leadership of
Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and Larry Itliong, the UFW fought for higher
wages and better working conditions for farmworkers in California and
eventually nationwide.

ETC performed on the strike’s picket lines and in the flatbeds of trucks in
farm fields. Its theatrical form was the *acto*, an agitprop sketch with
multiple goals: to chronicle and validate the farmworkers’ plight at a time
when no one else did; to ridicule the opposition (farm bosses were
typically costumed in pig snouts) to make it more approachable; and to
suggest solutions — boycotting, striking — aimed at inspiring audiences to
social action.

In devising the new show, Morales, Sandoval and six other contributing
writers knew they wanted to create a retrospective that honored that
history, embodied in the show’s title — “Viva la Causa” refers to the
campaign to unionize Mexican American farmworkers and invokes the Chicano
movement as a whole. They knew they wanted to make the production
immersive, inviting audience members to explore different rooms in their
facility for the first time. And they knew it should be a series of short
plays, one for each of ETC’s traditional forms: *mito* (myth), *corrido*
(Mexican folk ballad) and *historia* (history), as well as the *acto*.

But it wasn’t until weeks before last weekend’s opening that Sandoval and
Morales realized they needed to settle on just what *la Causa* means for
the company, both today and in the future.

“We realized, unfortunately, it’s still the same,” Sandoval said. “It’s
still searching for self-determination of Chicanos and Chicanas in the
United States. It’s still fighting for our culture to be recognized and
represented. The cause is not over.”

Ethnic theaters

With that decision, ETC stands out among ethnic-specific theaters in the
region. Although many such groups are going strong in the Bay Area, such as
African-American Shakespeare Company, and newer ones like Ferocious Lotus
Theatre Company are already wielding sizable influence, others are in
tenuous positions, or gone. Lorraine Hansberry Theatre has not been
producing regularly since it lost two venues and its two founders died.
Traveling Jewish Theatre and Asian American Theater Company both closed
their doors in 2011.

Often when these companies close, it’s not for only

The kings of Spain brought us the conquistadores and masters, whose
footprints remained in the circular land grants assigned to those searching
for gold in the sands of rivers, an abusive and shameful form of
exploitation, traces of which can be noted from the air in many places
around the country.

Tourism today, in large part, consists of viewing the delights of our
landscapes and tasting exquisite delicacies from our seas, and is always
shared with the private capital of large foreign corporations, whose
earnings, if they don’t reach billions of dollars, are not worthy of any
attention whatsoever.

Since I find myself obliged to mention the issue, I must add - principally
for the youth - that few people are aware of the importance of such a
condition, in this singular moment of human history. I would not say that
time has been lost, but I do not hesitate to affirm that we are not
adequately informed, not you, nor us, of the knowledge and conscience that
we must have to confront the realities which challenge us. The first to be
taken into consideration is that our lives are but a fraction of a
historical second, which must also be devoted in part to the vital
necessities of every human being. One of the characteristics of this
condition is the tendency to overvalue its role, in contrast, on the other
hand, with the extraordinary number of persons who embody the loftiest
dreams.

Nevertheless, no one is good or bad entirely on their own. None of us is
designed for the role we must assume in a revolutionary society, although
Cubans had the privilege of José Martí’s example. I even ask myself if he
needed to die or not in Dos Ríos, when he said, “For me, it’s time,” and
charged the Spanish forces entrenched in a solid line of firepower. He did
not want to return to the United States, and there was no one who could
make him. Someone ripped some pages from his diary. Who bears this
treacherous responsibility, undoubtedly the work of an unscrupulous
conspirator? Differences between the leaders were well known, but never
indiscipline. “Whoever attempts to appropriate Cuba will reap only the dust
of its soil drenched in blood, if he does not perish in the struggle,”
stated the glorious Black leader Antonio Maceo. Máximo Gómez is likewise
recognized as the most disciplined and discreet military chief in our
history.

Looking at it from another angle, how can we not admire the indignation of
Bonifacio Byrne when, from a distant boat returning him to Cuba, he saw
another flag alongside that of the single star and declared, “My flag is
that which has never been mercenary...” immediately adding one of the most
beautiful phrases I have ever heard, “If it is torn to shreds, it will be
my flag one day… our dead raising their arms will still be able to defend
it!” Nor will I forget the blistering words of Camilo Cienfuegos that
night, when, just some tens of meters away, bazookas and machine guns of
U.S. origin in the hands of counterrevolutionaries were pointed toward that
terrace on which we stood.

Obama was born in August of 1961, as he himself explained. More than half a
century has transpired since that time.

Let us see, however, how our illustrious guest thinks today:

“I have come here to bury the last remnant of the Cold War in the Americas.
I have come here to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people,”
followed by a deluge of concepts entirely novel for the majority of us:

“We both live in a new world, colonized by Europeans,” the U.S. President
continued, “Cuba, like the United States, was built in part by slaves
brought here from Africa. Like the United States, the Cuban people can
trace their heritage to both slaves and slave-owners.”

The native populations don’t exist at all in Obama’s mind. Nor does he say
that the Revolution swept away racial discrimination, or that pensions and
salaries for all Cubans were decreed by it before Mr. Barrack Obama was 10
years old. The hateful, racist bourgeois custom of hiring strongmen to
expel Black citizens from recreational centers was swept away by the Cuban
Revolution - that which would go down in history for the battle against
apartheid that liberated Angola, putting an end to the presence of nuclear
weapons on a continent of more than a

More documents about former Black Panther leader Richard Aoki have been
released by the FBI under a new Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

As a former friend (and perhaps a reported subject) of the late Aoki, I do
not think these documents are FBI fabrications as some of his other and closer

is important to study police practices if we are serious about studying history

An October 23, 2014 review of Naomi Klein's This Changes Everything in the
London Review of Books:

Spoiler - Concluding sentences:

Kahneman won a Nobel Prize for his work on the psychology of human
decision-making, which may be why he’s so gloomy. ‘This is not what you might
want to hear,’ he says, but ‘no amount of psychological awareness will overcome
people’s reluctance to lower their standard of living. So that’s my bottom
line: there is not much hope. I’m thoroughly pessimistic. I’m sorry.’

In other words, the truth doesn't set us free.

[Marxism] Hollywood Blacklist - NYT Aug 7 article

I was waiting for Louis, the movement's film critic, to post this but I
didn't see it. Although the political viewpoint is rightist and leaves out
important background, it has some information that I found useful. I wish
I was in NYC to see the films. UC Berzerkley has useful bibliographic info
on the topic at http://lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/blacklist.html. I read on
Portside that Norma Barzman (The Red and the Blacklist, autobiography) at
93 is still fighting the good fight and kicked off a UCLA film festival in
July -

If my post is too long for this list, please let me know so I don't make
this mistake again.

The close-up, the big screen, the eternal klieg light of unending media
coverage: Motion pictures, especially those made in Hollywood, are a
technology of magnification. How else to explain that the tale of the 300
or so movie studio employees whose political associations cost them their
jobs has come to dramatize the repressive hysteria of the McCarthy era?

A real-life film noir featuring danger, betrayal, selflessness and close
encounters with movie stars, the Hollywood blacklist is a juicy narrative
and remains an enduring object of fascination. New scholarly histories roll
off academic presses, most recently “Hollywood Exiles in Europe
http://rutgerspress.rutgers.edu/product/Hollywood-Exiles-in-Europe,5055.aspx”
by Rebecca Prime and “Film Criticism, the Cold War and the Blacklist
http://www.ucpress.edu/book.php?isbn=9780520280670” by Jeff Smith, with
more on the way. This month, Anthology Film Archives and Cineaste magazine
will initiate an ambitious three-part series, “Screenwriters and the
Blacklist http://anthologyfilmarchives.org/film_screenings/series/42990:
Before, During and After.” And on Friday, the Film Society of Lincoln Center
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/f/film_society_of_lincoln_center/index.html?inline=nyt-org
revives “Red Hollywood,”
http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/294302/Red-Hollywood-Movie-/overview the
influential 1996 documentary by Thom Andersen and Noël Burch, giving it
context with screenings of eight features chosen by Mr. Andersen that were
directed or written by blacklisted artists.

“A policy of nonemployment for known Communists,” as it was characterized
by The New York Times when it was implemented in November 1947, following
the House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings on Communist
influence in the movie industry, began with the contractual termination of
the “unfriendly witnesses” — eight writers, one director and one producer —
known as the Hollywood 10. Political theater of the highest order, the
hearings directly involved and furthered the careers of two future
presidents, Richard M. Nixon
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/general-article/nixon-early/
and Ronald Reagan
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1985-08-26/news/8502250710_1_fbi-informant-hollywood-independent-citizens-committee-fbi-agent,
even as nonemployment accelerated in Hollywood with additional committee
hearings in the early 1950s.

Blacklisting had a pronounced effect on movie content and was not
restricted to Communists. Progressives like Charlie Chaplin and Orson
Welles were effectively driven out of the country. Although the ban ended
in 1960 when the credit for Dalton Trumbo, one of the Hollywood 10, flashed
on the screen in two liberal-minded superproductions, “Exodus”
http://movies.nytimes.com/gst/movies/titlelist.html?v_idlist=16326;302624;416531;448939inline=nyt_ttl
and “Spartacus,”

some on the blacklist would not work in Hollywood for another decade or
more, and others would never return.

Conventional wisdom has it that they were a marginal and mediocre lot.
“Only two had talent,” Billy Wilder claimed of the 10. “The rest were just
unfriendly.”

The Anthology series, which features a number of credible movies written by
members of the 10, means to dispel that assertion as well as another that
is directly addressed by “Red Hollywood

advanced, for

[Marxism] Cointelpro never ended

Cointelpro started long before it was labeled with the acronym and will never
end until (if you want to believe it is possible) a utopian communist society
with no class antagonism can be achieved. We should expose and oppose
infiltration, subversion, provocation, informing, etc., but thinking that
opposition will force the government to end these counter-revolutionary
practices is delusional and hampers the building of a well-disciplined left
movement.
