His over-the-top support of Israel was partly conditioned by his religious leanings. -- --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

It was taught to me by the same folk who expected me to provide, on a school test, some of the reasons that the "Negroes" were better off as slaves. Some of the same folk who took in an occasional cross lighting. (That school was in Florida, in the 1960s.) I could go on, but…" I think Michael is entirely correct to point out the glaring contradiction between an anti-racist message and other behaviour by some fundamentalist Christians. I observed this in the church I grew up in. If the church was going to do outreach among non-whites they had to discourage racist expressions among their congregants. An uncle of mine told us that he had one day in Sunday School referred to some housing as “not fit for a Chinaman.” He was a decent man and felt bad when he realized that he had said this in front of a Chinese boy. Our minister tried to discourage the use of the word “Chinatown” to refer to a part of our small town. He referred to it as “Glendale.” So I was surprised by an odd statement by the same minister one Sunday. Speaking of interracial marriage, he said why would a white woman want to be one of the wives of an African chief. It was not until many years later that I understood what was being said. I learned the our church, The Christian and Missionary Alliance was quite strong in the southern US. Presumably, that part of the church was asking their church in the north and in Canada to come to the defence of segregation. Given the widespread sympathy for the civil rights movement, it was hard for the church to do this explicitly and so we had this puzzling and tangential reference to what was happening in the US. I caught a whiff if this on one other occasion when one lay activist in our church explained to me that black people preferred to stick to themselves. Again, a roundabout way of referring to segregation. ken h _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

No longer a Christian, and I don't think Christianity was the fault of Jesus. He supposedly said that the lawyers killed the prophets (it's in the Bible, it must be true, right?). I eventually concluded that it was the Christians who killed Jesus. _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

Somehow, I remember the song Ken mentions: "red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world." it's a nice sentiment. my father never went to church, but i am pretty sure this is one thing he believed. he loved little kids. _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

I can still sing Jesus Loves the Little Children. Amazing. My old girl-friend Debby from the Houston branch of the SWP, who is featured in the comic book I did with Harvey Pekar, was the daughter of a Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor. She, him, her mom and her sister used to perform as the Singing Jenkins at revival meetings. I wish I had held on to the record she gave me of them performing. When she was at Wheaton College, a religious school, she met her husband Tom who was also religious. The two got involved with the Vietnam antiwar movement and then joined the YSA on campus and then the SWP after they graduated. After the Houston branch went nuts, she and a couple of other women were expelled for not informing on pot smoking comrades. The last I heard, she got religion again and married a member of the congregation. _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

They have a constituency not only at home, but many have missionaries overseas. I wonder what conversations those missionaries are having in the countries where they are active. I was raised in a fundamentalist church, The Christian and Missionary Alliance. I can still sing Jesus Loves the Little Children. Jesus loves the little children All the children of the world Red and yellow, black and white They are precious in His sight Jesus loves the little children of the world The use of these words might not be well received from me, as I long ago rejected my religious training. You might decide that they are useful in your work. ken h _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
