[MCN-L] Your thoughts on horizontal mentors?
Museum professionals in both large and small institutions may sometimes feel isolated, lost in the bureaucracy, or unsure of how to take the next steps in their career paths. In preparation for a presentation at the 2013 annual meeting of the American Alliance of Museums, a group of alumni from the Getty Leadership Institute?s NextGen program is exploring the concept of horizontal mentoring as a solution to these problems. We would like to hear from you regarding your experiences with horizontal mentors. Quick survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DNHB2N8 What is a horizontal mentor? A mentor is often thought of as someone with great knowledge and significant experience in his/ her specialty who takes on an apprentice to train and bring up in the profession. This traditional form of vertical mentoring is becoming less common as more and more new and mid-level professionals seek out peer or horizontal mentors. Different from peer or horizontal networks (like Linked In), horizontal mentors are those professional peers to whom one can turn for deeper and more frank discussions, whose advice and judgment about professional and career questions one seeks and values, and whom one can call on for support. Thank you for any time you have to weigh in on this topic. Best, Dana
[MCN-L] Whatever happened to MuseTechCentral?
Hi Ben - I was CC'd on some off-list communication so you know the status, but I thought I should reply to the community and let them know as well. MuseTechCentral launched back in 2008 and was never really maintained or updated. It slowly spiraled into a relatively un-usable state and through inattention the domain was allowed to expire -- and as you've noticed, was snatched up by a squatter. I *think* the actual database and code still exist on an ex-board member's server in Toronto, but after an informal discussion MCN has decided not to invest time and effort into resurrecting the service. I think with the prominence of github and its growing number of museum-centric repositories we as a community would do better to focus there and try to organize those repos. This has come up before, but maybe now's the time... Anyone want to start building a repo that's a list of all museums on github? Here's a start: https://github.com/IMAmuseum/ https://github.com/walkerart https://github.com/cooperhewitt Thanks, Nate On Thu, Mar 28, 2013 at 5:33 PM, Ben Rubinstein benr at cogapp.com wrote: Does anyone know what became of http://musetechcentral.org/ ? I was following an old link to a resource there and was distressed to find it seemed to have been taken over by a bunch of financial scammers (or advisers). Is this a known thing? The Internet Archive was able to display some of the resources (but not as it happened the one I was looking for) - does anyone know about backups? Or is just that the domain was allowed to lapse, and the whole facility is still alive somewhere? Would you now choose Hasselblad, Mamiya Leaf (or another system) for medium-format digital? 2. For the the best compatible lights with said system above, would you choose strobes such as Broncolor, or continuous lights such as NorthLights (or others?) I understand that using continuous lighting systems, or strobes, are a matter of a photographer's experience personal taste... But, given that Hasselblad and Broncolor have recently joined to form Hassel-Bron (at least for their distribution) I've heard the Broncolor strobes are more consistent with color between multi-shots. Is this true, or are there different viewpoints? Are the continuous lights just as reliable between passes i.e does color temp fluctuate, or have Hasselblad and Broncolor really worked it out? Side question: Is it still too early in the photo art-repro world to consider LEDs being a viable and affordable continuous lighting system? I've heard they're currently popular in the movie industry, but what's the word in studio art-reproduction, or in-gallery views? Any and all input appreciated--- Many thanks! Following the recommendations of other MCN folks, we deployed a Phase one 645/P40+ last year from Digital Transitions in NY. So far so good, really good actually.
