[MCN-L] Rights Statements

2016-04-19 Thread Sarah Clark
After taking a quick look at the Rights Statements (at
http://rightsstatements.org/page/1.0/?language=en ), I'm having difficulty
determining which statements might support my museum's desire to protect its
rights regarding physical materials that it owns. My understanding has been
that collections we own (and our photographs of them) are protected by civil
and contract law. Has anyone else out there encountered that concern?

Announcing the launch of RightsStatements.org
In May 2015, the International Rights Statements Working Group released two
white papers with our recommendations for establishing standardized rights
statements for describing copyright and reuse status of digital cultural
heritage materials, and the enabling technical infrastructure for those
statements. After working for nearly a year to implement the
recommendations of the white papers, the Digital Public Library of
America and
Europeana are proud to announce the launch of
RightsStatements.org.

Re: [MCN-L] Image Metadata for Physical dimensions of subject of image

2016-04-19 Thread Sarah Gillis
Hi Dave,

I am embedding physical dimensions into the image files of the subject
depicted. I use the VRA Metadata Panel/Palette (we're going back and forth on
a relaunch name). With this tool, multiple dimensions can now be added for one
image file.

http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/w/page/74156486/VRA%20XMP%20Info%20Panel

At present, I'm not sure if we follow specific standards in our data entry for
the measurements, but have a working group which came to a consensus on how
dimensions should be captured for our collection.

3D objects are H X W x D, centimeters first, then inches. If the object is on a
mount, we add a separate dimension for the mount/base, and then an overall for
both together.

Paintings are canvas, then framed, then frame only.

Works on paper is Image then plate (if detected), then sheet.

All of this information is added from the database to the image files within my
workflow. I add all basic cataloguing information of the object as well as
Getty thesauri terms (which are now linked through the Panel) so that it
matches the original cataloguing records as much as possible.

I am intrigued by this ruler and look forward to testing this further. Thanks
for sharing!

I hope this helps!

Subject: [MCN-L] Image Metadata for Physical dimensions of subject of image

Greetings,

The IIIF specifications allow for a data service to be registered that returns
physical scale metadata for images which, in turn, can be used to render a
ruler on-screen in order to convey image scale.

http://iiif.io/api/image/2.0/
http://iiif.io/api/annex/services/

I'm curious if anyone is embedding the physical dimensions of the subject of
their photographs as metadata in the image and if so:
1. what metadata standard(s) are you using, and 2. is this practice part of
your imaging workflow or done ad-hoc?

Thanks,

Dave Beaudet
