[MCN-L] Art Institute of Chicago's Online Catalogue Preview

2011-11-18 Thread Sam Quigley
Dear Colleagues,

The Getty Foundation?s Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI)
challenged a select group of nine museums to create an innovative online
scholarly publication that would transform how museums publish curatorial
and conservation research about their permanent collections. The Art
Institute of Chicago is pleased now to invite you to participate in the
review of the first stage of this exciting initiative. Below this message
you will find links to the first entries of the catalogues that have grown
out of this research and collaboration: *Monet Paintings and Drawings at
the Art Institute of Chicago* and *Renoir Paintings and Drawings at the Art
Institute of Chicago.*

We are extremely interested in your feedback and ask for your assistance in
making the experience of these catalogues the best it can be. Please share
with us your reaction and comments at *
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OnlineCatalogueFeedback* or directly by
emailing us at OnlineCatalogueFeedback at artic.edu.

The Catalogues:

*Monet Paintings and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago*

*Renoir Paintings and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago.*

http://publications.artic.edu/reader/renoir-paintings-and-drawings-art-institute-chicago

There is also a video demonstration of the Online Scholarly Catalogue
Reader, that you might find useful as an introduction at

Thank you in advance for any feedback you may have!

[MCN-L] Looking for Digitization Strategy/Implementation Plans

2011-01-14 Thread Sam Quigley
Others more knowledgable than me should chime in here. I have generally been
told that the camera is just plain faster and more flexible. Just think of
the time it takes for a typical scanner to process a whole page as compared
to a shutter ... and then multiply that by 100 or 150 processes a day.

One of the issues I am curious about - for 'flat' works (documents,
letters, photos, etc) how do you decide between scanning or photographing?
  Are there benefits/drawbacks between them?

I'd love some input on that.

 Thanks.

Yes, that's the situation we're addressing. We have no intention of changing
our policy concerning shepherding professional crews with major equipment

we're addressing.

 pre-arranged
with our Press Office and there are conservation and scheduling
requirements. I can send you those offline.

[MCN-L] new job

2010-10-18 Thread Sam Quigley
Congratulations, G?nter!!
This is great news, not just for you, but for all of us who care about our
Nation's largest repository. With this smart choice, they're obviously
intent upon making a great place even better.
We'll miss you in Austin.
All best,
Sam

 Dear colleagues friends,

I am sorry to say that I'll miss this year's MCN conference in Austin. I've
attended every single conference from 1998 Santa Monica on, so Austin would
have been my 13th MCN conference in a row.

My reason for missing the conference is not superstition, but that I'll be
in between employers. My last day at OCLC Research will be this Friday,
October 22nd, and I'll start as Director, Digitization Program Office at the
 Smithsonian Institution on December 6th.

In my new role, I'll be the owner of the Creating a Digital Smithsonian
strategic plan (http://bit.ly/bpMksJ). I think of it as a companion piece
to the Web New Media Strategy (http://bit.ly/9XnCZU) many of you have
heard Mike Edson present at recent conferences. While the Web New Media
Strategy is predominantly concerned with how to engage the public, Creating
a Digital Smithsonian is predominantly concerned with back-of-the-house
tasks such as creating and managing digital assets so they can be optimally
 leveraged.

I'll send my new coordinates once I have them. In the meantime, you can
reach me at guenter.waibel at gmail.com. Forward me your Austin restaurant
recommendations - I think we'll be passing through in November while driving
to DC. I'll see you all at MCN 2012.

[MCN-L] rapid digitization workflows

2010-08-04 Thread Sam Quigley
In the better late than never department...

For a some detail on the work flow we employed at the Art Institute,
please see our entry on the MCN Project Registry by following this
link: http://www.musetechcentral.org/project.aspx?projectid=60. There
you will also be able to access some historical production data buried
in the Update for WebWise 2010 pdf file.

And just in case you haven't used this valuable resource, I recommend
poking around MuseTechCentral to see what great work our colleagues
have been doing ... it can be really useful in framing your own
project plan.

All best,
Sam

 Hi everybody,

I've recently had the good fortune of seeing the rapid digitization
process the National Gallery has set up for its works-on-paper. (I
know Alan and Peter are on this list, so rather than bungling the
details, I'll leave it to them to describe what they're doing -
needless to say, it's impressive.) At MCN, I've overheard that
various other folks are working on rapid imaging workflows, or
already have them in place - the Art Institute, Harvard U Art
Museum, Yale U Art Gallery, MoMA come to mind. I'd be curious to
hear who has an established workflow, what you are imaging, and what
your throughput is as compared to your high-end workflow.

 Cheers,

ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO LAUNCHES LANDMARK VIRTUAL GALLERY TOUR ON
MUSEUM WEBSITE
First Art Museum to Combine Panoramic Gallery Images with Wayfinding
System

Today the Art Institute of Chicago launched Pathfinder,
www.artic.edu/pathfinder/
, the museum?s new interactive floor plan and virtual gallery tour
system on its website. The first art museum in the world to
dynamically combine its floor plan with fully up-to-date high-
definition and panoramic views of its galleries, the Art Institute now
offers web surfers and visitors planning a trip to the museum a
completely unique experience of the galleries. Pathfinder features not
only the interactive floor plan, which is part of the wayfinding
system installed throughout the museum for the opening of the Modern
Wing, but also the ability to zoom in and out of the panoramic views
for closer looks at works of art, direct links to the available
catalog information for individual works, and Spanish-language prompts
and on-screen navigation tools. The initial launch of Pathfinder
includes views of nearly a third of the museum?s permanent collection
galleries, with images of the remaining galleries to be added
throughout the year.

?The Modern Wing has really been the impetus for numerous wide-spread
changes in the ways the museum makes itself accessible to all
visitors, both virtual and real,? said James Cuno, President and
Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute. ?We have a new
building, with its fresh approach to our collections, to the city, and
to the landscape around us. And now, with our new interactive
pathfinder on the web, we are bringing these fresh approaches to the
hundreds of thousands of people who come to our website seeking
information about our museum and collections. This pioneering
development is a testament to the efforts of our information
technology department and our constant quest to serve our visitors to
the best of our abilities.?

Led by Sam Quigley, museum Vice President for Collections Management,
Imaging, and Information Technology, the Art Institute team worked
with Slate Roof Studio, designers of interactive media, and AvantLogic
Corporation, the creators of the interactive mapping software
MapsAlive. The web version of Pathfinder is based on the new
interactive digital wayfinding system which was installed in the
museum on touch screens in May for the opening of the Modern Wing.
Taking the wayfinding system to the museum?s website offered the
museum the opportunity to link it to other web-based resources, such
as the online collection catalog and information about daily programs
and current exhibitions. Now web visitors are able to view the
complete floor plans, click an icon for gallery shots, and virtually
?wander? through specific galleries via high-definition digital images
that have been stitched together to create 360-degree views of the
galleries. Viewers now also have the ability to navigate within the
?virtual? galleries by zooming in on individual works of art for a
better look or seeing them with other works displayed nearby, the way
the curators arranged the galleries. Web surfers can also click on the
images to access full information and often descriptive label text
about the work using the online collection catalog.

Pathfinder additionally offers information about daily programming and
gallery tours, all current exhibitions, special activities in the new
Ryan Education Center, and visitor amenities such as restaurants and
shops. The site is available in an English language version as well as
a Spanish language version. The museum will continue the ongoing
process of photographing all the permanent collection galleries
throughout the summer, fall, and winter, with the goal of making
available every Modern Wing gallery by December. The remainder of the
permanent collection galleries will be available online as they are
reinstalled as part of the museum-wide renovation project.

[MCN-L] Tricky question - is Mac better than PC?

2006-09-08 Thread Sam Quigley
Being a fool, I'll rush in...

Go with Macs.
The entire high-end hardware and software imaging industry is
optimized around the Macintosh platform.
And the skill set of most fine arts photographers is centered around Macs.
I would very much doubt that this is undergoing change at a measureable pace.

PCs may be marketed as the machine for everyman and everywoman, but a
museum-grade imaging operation is a completely different arena.
But then, that's just my opinion.

At 11:35 AM 9/8/2006, you wrote:
Hello,

We are hoping that the wonderful members of mcn-l can help us with a
question we are debating here in Houston. I hope this isn't a question
that has been posed recently to the list and I've just missed it.

We are currently involved in a project to convert out photo studio from
film to digital. It's a very exciting project, but it has brought up an
old question that I had hoped to avoid - the dreaded Is Mac better for
graphic applications than PC? question.

The MFAH is predominantly PC-based, with only a few Macs in our Graphics
department. Our IT department would like to keep it this way, but a
consultant has recommended that our new photo studio and imaging lab use
Macs. Our current digital equipment is running on PCs and it seems to
work just fine. Since we're making decisions about pretty expensive new
equipment we want to make sure that we're not overlooking anything.

Can anyone explain why Macs are better for graphics and digital imaging
than PCs? Not just that graphic designers and photographers prefer
Macs, but why they're different and better? This would be a great help
and I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Harvard University Art Museums' Collections Online

2003-04-22 Thread Sam Quigley

Please forgive the cross postings
Harvard University Art Museums (the Fogg, the Arthur M. Sackler, and the
Busch-Reisinger Museums) is pleased to announce the third data upload to
its searchable database, Collections Online, available to the public at
www.artmuseums.harvard.edu

This research discovery tool now provides basic information on about
76,000 objects more than half of the permanent collection. Deeper
cataloguing data, such as bibliography, marks and inscriptions,
provenance, and exhibition history, are included for about 10,000 of
these objects.
Approximately 12,500 object records are illustrated with images
currently, and this number is growing rapidly. Increasing the number of
images representing objects in the searchable database is one of the
primary objectives the Art Museums has articulated for its digital
initiative in the upcoming year.
Collections Online also includes a number of “Tours,” which are groupings
of objects, pre-assembled according to various thematic principles.
Initially, four Masterpieces of the Art Museums’ Tours, chosen by the Art
Museums' former Director, James Cuno, were presented. In addition, these
are now augmented with tours of two special exhibitions, namely A
Private Passion: 19th-Century Paintings and Drawings from the Grenville
L. Winthrop Collection, and Bruegel To Rembrandt: Dutch and
Flemish Drawings from the Maida and George Abrams
Collection.
It is our hope that making this data available will prove useful to the
scholarly community as a reference and discovery tool, especially to
those preparing to visit the Art Museums to conduct research. Recognizing
that the amount and extent of information online will never be complete,
email and telephone contact information for each curatorial department is
prominently displayed, as is information about how to set up appointments
for close inspection of the objects. As internal cataloging and research
continues a normal part of curatorial activity future uploads
of additional information and images will increase the usefulness of
Collections Online over time.
For information about the technical infrastructure supporting Collections
Online, see
http://www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/collections/servlet/webpublisher.WebCommunication?ia=tric=ptt=xhtmlx=techinfo

We invite you to use this resource and welcome your comments and
critiques.
