That was the reason we haven't pursued it for ticketing, as we need
something that will also handle tour reservations.

Dear Amber,

We are in the process of implementing Retail Pro for our museum shop.
It has advanced inventory control; point of sale; and merchandising
capabilities. It also has extensive reporting. We had to customize the
system for ticketing. I do not believe it handles tour reservations -
but you may be able to customize it for that too.

We purchased the system from IMS (International Micro Systems Inc.,
www.ims-pro.com). The company also sells software entitled STADIS that
integrates ticketing, concessions, and merchandise.

So far, it seems to be powerful enough for our operations. I have not
compared it to VISTA - but it can collect customer data and zip codes
that is useful in targeted mailings. I will be able to let you know if
it works as we hope it to work in a few months when we are fully
operational with the system.

Sincerely,

Janet

I've been told Retail Pro has been used at ski resorts for selling lift
tickets and it is a very powerful POS. Retail Pro doesn't have the
ability to collect marketing information that VISTA does and obviously
the POS doesn't do scheduling. We find that we need the ability to
modify scheduled groups because the number of individuals often changes
 from the initial reservation.

I asked our Vice-Director of Operations what he does. He uses
MS-Project, and he said:

"This is about the way I use [MS Project]; only I do not program the
individuals. I have the number of men (resources) and the time allowed
to do the job. All of it is reviewed on the Gantt Chart which I use to
plan my manpower resources. It is possible to do what you are asking;
but I would go into those details only if I had 30 or more people to
schedule. With 3 or 4 people per shop, it is more important to schedule
to "windows" for the shops rather than the individuals."

By "shop" he means carpentry, electricians, engineers, painters, etc.

FYI, there is a free, open-source analog to MS-Project called "Planner"
(http://www.imendio.com/projects/planner/). I use it and it seems very
similar to MS-Project to me, but I'm not an expert in either. I've been
hoping to switch some of our Project users to Planner; they're expecting
the Windows port to come out in a few weeks (no Mac ports planned, as
far as I know).

To say the least we are looking for a software package that does a lot, but
something to help get us a little more organized so that everyone knows what

any tips on anything good out there, it would be greatly appreciated.

  Subject: Software Question

  Hello,

  I was
wondering if anyone is using any type of software program to track/log
exhibition tasks and schedules.  For example, we are looking for
something that includes which person is responsible for painting pedestals as
well as a start and finish date for that task.  We would also like to log
when the art arrives, the installation and de-installation of it, who is
hanging it, etc.  Additionally, it should be able to include curators and
curatorial assistants tasks related to the exhibition.

  To say
the least we are looking for a software package that does a lot, but something
to help get us a little more organized so that everyone knows what is being
done and when as well as who is responsible for it.  If anyone has any
tips on anything good out there, it would be greatly
  appreciated.

  Thanks
  much,

Collections management software question

2004-06-02 Thread Trudy Levy
Does anyone know anything about ArtSystems - http://www.artsystems.com/

1300 leading art and antique galleries, dealers, private and corporate
collections, small art museums, professional artists, and other businesses
on six continents rely on Artsystems software for their critical information
management needs. Since 1989, Artsystems has been selected by more galleries
than all other systems combined.

Thanks for any information.
