At $308. each, that only accounts for 3 shop hours at a decent body shop. 3
hrs to repair, to paint standard, a rusty fender,
Try POR.

It those establishments were autobody shops then being reputable will not
change anything. Body shops have no idea how to correctly repair rust. It needs
to be taken to a high end restoration shop. Any other alternative besides doing
it yourself in a skilled manner will surely lead to disappoint

the electrolytic conversion do. Instructions are somewhere on Jim

Since I intend for my '84 300D to be my last car and last me the rest of my
days, I replaced the RF & LR fenders in '09 after finding rust that I was
convinced would spread. I've had rust "repaired" in the past by reputable
establishments only for rust to reappear a couple years later. Even i

We are thinking of repainting her 1985 300CD. It has some rust in
both front fenders, esp. the passenger side. Would it be less costly
to 1) buy and install (relatively)
How bad is the rust?
Big rust would require lots of shop time to fix, and sourcing fresh
fender might be less costly.
Second the new fender. I have not priced a fender for a 123 lately,
but give Q a chance. Last I knew 124 fenders and 126 fenders were
just a little over $100 each.

They stopped using that somewhere around 1982 on W123s. Our '82 240D/3.0
was built without the seam sealer and the fenders are easy to
If rust can be repaired properly without removing fender then I'd opt for that.
Fender removal means removal of that undercoating stuff which is a job in
itself. That might also predispose to future rust if not prepped and re-
undercoated properly.

They use some nasty seam sealer on the top edge. You have to use a heat gun or
a torch to soften it up.

Are these glued on? I seem to recall some reference to difficulties
changing MB fenders because they are bolted and glued on.

Big rust would require lots of shop time to fix, and sourcing fresh fender
might be less costly. PnP fender should be very inexpensive. Still lots of
shop time to prep for paint and mounting. Probably same a for a new made
fender. Maaco paint job with fix would be least
No, no, no --- This is where you get to justify buying the mig welder,
the air compressor etc. DIY!

to 1) buy and install (relatively) rust-free used fenders; or 2) have
the body shop repair the existing ones?
