Hey Don,
IMO there's no comparison between break in oil and hydraulic oil as
they performs different functions. Much of what engine oil does is
lubricate while much of what AT does is operate the hydraulic controls
(in a way). The engine has many parts moving together which must

One. You need the mann transmission filter for your 124. Not
elring, no FLAPS junk.
Order the Mann and a gasket from Mr. Rusty!
THis is per Sun Vally, the MB transmission gurus.

Last Elring kit I used for my W116 the gasket didn't fit the pan very
well. Just a tiny bit too small, kept popping off.
Elring is fine for all but 124. Sun Valley is very specific to ONLY
use MANN on the 124. He knows his . I use elring on everything
else. But for 124, it is MANN. There is not a big price difference.

If the vacuum controls for the EGR and air recirculation valve are
blown, you can get low vac to the transmission and ACC controls. If
the ACC air handling isn't working right (mainly air out of the
windshield defrost vents when it's not supposed to be), check for
vac. The supply comes

Hey Wilton,
When I put a rebuilt AT in my w124 last year (bought from Rusty, rebuilt
by SunValley) I was planning to get the installation shop to put Mobil 1
ATF in but asked Sun Valley and they quickly replied that I should use
Dexron II.So that it is. Also, Sun valley requires a 24k

I would guess (and that's all it is) that the first fill of oil should be
dino based, like using break-in oil in a new engine. At the first change
and there after, I'd use M1 - but that's just me.

Perhaps the actual modulator is toast, they do fail, to check em you
attach a vaccy gauge and see if it holds vacuum.
And change the bloody fluid and filters, even I am not that slack.

the hard plastic lines can crack, and the black connectors can crack

The modulator is suspect until you pull a vacuum on it and it holds.

If it started all of a sudden, more likely a vacuum leak. Hopefully not

I'd look for a vacuum leak on the modulator or the vacuum line to it.
Loss of vacuum will cause abrupt shifts.

Almost certainly not. If it's that old, yes well past time for a fluid
and filter change. Don't forget to drain the converter.
