My Factory Crated new zero time engine arrived with a blank spot and I
watched the dealer stamp the original serial number on it. So other than all

which engine is in the car.
Now maybe if the engine was replaced

Is there a way to know if a rodbender has had the engine replaced? Is
there a casting number or some other indicator that would indicate it
has been done?

Take the VIN at the dealer to pull a service history? Supposedly the
good engines are factory rebuilds, I'd assume most of these were
installed by dealerships.

I go with 'ask the dealer'.
Serial numbers not matching does not mean the current engine in the car escapes
rodbender status. It could have come from a salvage vehicle, or worse yet, have
been rebuilt by incompetents.

Why would you care? Even the bad ones are good for a few weeks
No
I bought a factory engine for the '76 300D once - they were on sale,
supposedly one of the last two in the Chicago warehouse. It had a blank spot
where the serial number was supposed to be. I heard somewhere that a dealer
was supposed to stamp the original engines number there. Can't verify that
Those test will indicate that there is a problem but not the exact
nature of it.

Local dealer quoted me $140 for a rod, then charged me $190 when I
went to pick it up. I replaced 3 lifters and a few bolts and got to
buy lots of new tools that I'll never use again.
Overall it was a good experience. Cylinders were okay. But I know it

If the cylinders and pistons are good, you can fix it for something like
$250 a rod (x6) plus gaskets, rings, etc. I'd budget $2000-2500 if I
were doing all the labor myself.
AFAIK, only MBZ seems to be able to redo the block so that the engine
will last hundreds of kilomiles after the rebuild.
In my case - no. Although I don't have a clue how to interpret leak
down test results, so I did not bother.
You have to pull the head and measure how much each piston protrudes
above the block at the top of it's stroke. Removing the vacuum pump
makes it easier to turn the engine by hand if you

It should show egged out cylinders and pistons
Are the rod bender motors fixable or is it just a matter of the cost of doing
it? For example, if the rods are bent
and the cylinder worn oval, can it be bored or sleeved? If you have one that
appears to be alright is it wise to
fix it before it gets worse or is it considered hopeless?

It should show egged out cylinders and pistons after the rods
have been bent a while. (of course, the blue cloud behind
the car indicates much the same thing)

Check the turbo seals -- lots of oil in the intake with no significant
blowby means the bearings in the turbo are shot, allowing the shaft to
eat the seals. Lotta oil up the intake, usually, followed by serious
oil smoke out the back on acceleration. Usually accompanied by a
lazy turbo
I seem to remember something about NOT sleeving the 350, but the 300 is
sleeved at the factory. New sleeves, rods, pistons, and bearings were

Engine can be rebuilt, but it will likely cost more than a new one,
