Could well be wax or some similar contaminant from the road. I'd try scrubbing with Bon Ami. Don't use similar cleansers like Ajax---Bon Ami is only very mildly abrasive and won't scratch, others are harsher. I believe BMW officially recommended it at one point in a service bulletin for

Could there be some kind of chemical on my windshield making this happen? Maybe an old dose of RainX? Maybe car wash liquid wax? Is there any way to get it off? My favorite 'nuclear' solvent is acetone. Obviously you want to be fairly careful with it! -- Jim
