yeah, but the conversion kit is about 2 grand, isn't it? If I wanted a 123
gasser, i'd opt for a southern 280e

You can get a Weber conversion kit from JAM Engineering if you don't
want to mess with the Zeniths.

On second thought, I think the Holley EFI conversion might be less costly,
or about the same. Still, I'd opt for a fuel injected gasser. Those
blankin' Zeniths never work right. Course, you could put an OM 616 pr an
OM 601 into it and have a nice car.. if it weren't rusty

You know, you can get those webers pretty cheap used, and they don't
usually wear out. You'd possibly need to come up with adapters and such,
but if you're getting them piecemeal you could probably save some cash.
I've seen the webers with adapters for other applications go as low as $150
instead
Zenith's are a little different from the other carbs, once you have the
service manual for them ( 108 service manual) they are easy to set up
correctly and perform perfectly.
I have no problems with my 230 220S and 280S after I got the grasp of the
jets and fuel flows from the carb diagram.

The kit is about $900. I was thinking they were less than that; I
recall spending about $600 on the kit I bought for my '66 230 but that

Dan,
These are not impossible to tune - you just need to know how. The secret is
to use a mechanics stethoscope to listen to the whistle in the manifold
during idle. A carburetor venturi will make a sound (whistle) as air is
passing through the tone changes with velocity. Both will have the same
I've got a line on a '69 230 that looks like it's in great shape, but
the carbs are screwed up. Asking price $2500.

Yep, Rick, that's the one--did you have your eye on it as well?

Nah. I monitor all the CL benz listings in the midwest to post what I think
are the best deals (usually diesels) on here. If I know someone is looking
for something specific I will post that too.
