The way I remember it, the M112 used to pollute its catalytic converters
if you ran it on 87. Perhaps

There is one rural convenience store here that only sells 87 and diesel
but I can't think of any other place that doesn't offer 87-89-91
choices.
In Michigan the common choices
Quite the opposite in your case...

Weird, where is it that 91 or 93 octane isn't available?
There is one rural convenience store here that only sells 87 and diesel but I
can't think of any other place that doesn't offer 87-89-91 choices.
93 is harder to find (and expensive).

Are you at a high elevation? I remember visiting Boulder CO years ago and I
vaguely recall the gas sold was between 85 and 89 octane?
If 89 is the best you have I guess that makes the decision for you, unless you
want to look into using "octane-booster" additives.

I used to use 91 in my 2005 E320 but no longer available here so I have
used 89.

I don’t see it any differently than the same car being run on 87. I wouldn’t
advise doing it long term, but as long as you’re not mashing the throttle all
the time or running at high speeds or under heavy loads.
The ECU would compensate for any difference in fuel quality, I would expect.
Not
Well honestly I don't know. Would a tank or two of 89 hurt anything, probably
not. In a modern car the computer should compensate. But why did MB specify 91
if they didn't think it was necessary. That is my view.
