I had a similar trip to VA to pick up a 87 300SDL I bought years ago. It was
February when I went down, and I too discovered as I headed north home to NY
that I had no heat. I watched the outside temp gauge go from around 50 in
southern VA to -2 when I got home. I shivered for hours.

Part of that trip reminds me of a trip I took from State College to
Virginia Beach one night while attending Penn State. The rest of my family
was down there at a house along the beach and I wanted to join them. My
car at the time was an old Austin Marina 4 door, 4 cylinder, 4 speed.

Sometime after I left I lost the brakes or at least most of them.
Since I
was driving in the very early morning during the week on mostly 2 lane
roads through the countryside, I made it without incident. REALLY

The 2-speed automatic was good to some 45-50 mph in first gear.

Pffft. The 60 has the 144 in it, and when I started driving it it
had two dead holes to boot. Makes a 240D seem right sprightly.
(With all 6 it's perfectly tolerable.)
