Amen. Set XP to optimize for performance and set the interface to
classic and it is much easier on the eyes, and way faster. Makes
it stable also.

Right click on desktop - Properties - Appearance tab - Set 'Windows

Choose properties
In Properties, choose the Advanced tab
On the advanced tab choose performance.
Click on the button to adjust for best performance
Click ok
Click ok
Right click on an empty space in the taskbar
(you may need to close some windows to find a clear space)

better. With dial-up I don't expect much, but it would be nice to have a
page already loaded when I get back from the kitchen with a fresh cup of
coffee.

optimizing won't help the speed of your internet connection
much. But stuff running on your computer should be better, and it is
easier on your eyes than the bubble gum kiddie interface.
