Well, fool that I am it turns out that in the haste of the on-the-road
repair attempt I had jumpered the wrong two pins on the fuel
pump/kickdown relay. (Pin 87k is not the same as pin 87.) When I
jumpered the correct two pins the pump ran. (That would have made
getting it home a lot easier!)

can't be too old - if the Becker still picks up FM stations then it should
be fine.
Problems - iPod volume set too low, Becker not set to the broadcasting
channel, or too much interference from powered (real) FM stations.

It worked great but I have an aftermarket stereo.
I'd take a portable radio out to the car and try tuneing them together.

I also had shifting problems. Coming down the mountain, it slammed into each
gear pretty hard. I thought I had toasted the tranny on the 30 mile climb to
the peak, but the lower I got, the less the problem. The SD also SMOKED on the
way down. It NEVER smokes and hasn't since.
Easy fix -
In short, not enough vacuum under the hood, and too much in the air. ;)

As long as your radio can pull in 87.7 or whatever the lowest freq.
is the chingazo should work. Maybe the chingazo is junk and the
becker is fine. Or the Becker just does not pull that low of a signal.

If you haven't adjusted your ALDA, adjusting it CCW about a turn and a half
will do wonders. As your SD went higher, the ALDA naturally reduced fuel to
minimize smoking. The springs and such have weakened in your injection pump,
also reducing fuel delivery at any given point,
