If your climate control is working right you won't notice the A/C is
on in the winter except that the windshield will stay clear. That's
what the second button from the left is for. :)

The only way I would part with it at this point would be if someone offered

My sentiments exactly from one SD owner to another! The only other
possibility would be if I found someone who would allow me to trade it for a
300TD Turbo Diesel in equivalent condition which is very doubtful.

I don't really need AC in Iowa -- nice but not the requirement you have in
Jax.

I will fly down to my folks' condo at Crescent Beach, give you $1000 and
drive the car home.

Re: [MBZ] 240

2008-02-12 Thread E M
I dropped a guy a note today on the 560SEL I mentioned in an early post.
Wished him luck in getting his price, but if not, keep my email and drop me
a line in a month or two. I'm not very good at haggling, and I'd rather
just let people figure out for themselves when they're asking too much. I
left the door open for him to adjust his price.

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Wonko the Sane
Gotta put in a BuyMBParts plug here.

I occasionally (normally?) buy just what I need. Last time, it was four glow
plugs.

I simply asked Rusty on the phone to ship cheapest possible means, and he
dropped them (or someone dropped them) into a padded envelope and sent them
to me 1st class mail. ... $3 shipping vs. arm/leg UPS charges.

Service like this you can't put a price tag on. I think the MBA word for it
is Good Will.

Lot of us up north forget to run our a/c regularly during the winter, me

to do it tomorrow, but it's hard sitting in the car with a/c on when it's

On my 111 coupe the new headliner involved removing front and rear glass
plus the wood in front, plus 20 hours skilled labor, then reinsertion of the
glass front and rear by an expert, and finally the nerve-wracking
re-installation of the bowed wood w/s pieces and rear view mirror. I

That is what I learned to fly in except that my instructor had added a
nose cone and windshield. It was a lot of fun but a bit heavy. I now fly
a Challenger single place. A lot more fun and lighter! I attached a

While talking (e-mailing) about cars and motorcycles on Joe Amelia's
SL list - years ago - a Dr. reminded us of the old saying - a
motorcycle is flesh around metal, while a car is metal around flesh.
He also remarked about being the track Dr. somewhere in the NE - and
finding the remains of a motorcycle rider - fully armored body on one
side, and helmeted head on the other side of a tree.
So - do what makes you happy, but be aware of the risks.

personally accomplished the final work ticket items. Did I ever mention
that my motto is "why do it right the first time?".

Sell them a 240D, a bit less temptation, and even if they had

Re: [MBZ] CHevy 305/350 WAS- High mileage badges

2008-02-12 Thread Curt Raymond

In my quest to replace my aging Dakota (211,000 miles and rust) I came across
an '87 K5 Blazer with a mere 89,000 miles.
Checking fueleconomy.gov its only about 1mpg worse on the highway than my
Dakota...
Boy I like the old body style Blazers, big and confortable. Good in the woods,
not bad on the road and really not all that bad on gas all things considered.
That and a bigger snowmobile trailer might be a good fit for my needs for
relatively little money.

I had a 350 with TBI in my 87 4x4 Blazer with 4spd 700R4, it was OK,
kinda agricultural but solid and you can get parts at the 7-11. When
that started burning oil I had an old guy (in his 80s now, complaining
but still doing engine work, built AJFoyt's first race engine back
 when)
build me up a 350 -- he put on Vortec heads (they flow better,
 aluminum)
and an Edelbrock intake, ZZ4 cam and some other stuff, but we used the
TBI on it. It never did run right -- I think the cam/heads are not
 well
matched to what the old TBI computer can do. I found a laptop program
and made up a cable to watch the computer, it looked like everything
 was
fine but it runs rich. Wouldn't pass emissions (at the legit places)
 so
I sorta retired it. I still have that truck, been trying to sell it
 but
body is rusted and no one will pay for the engine/drivetrain which is
quite solid, so I might strip it down, keep the good bits, and scrap
 the
rest. It would run well with a 4bbl or a newer FI set up, but the 4bbl

won't pass inspection and a new FI is pricey. Before I had him do
 mine,
I drove a truck he had just built/put a 350 in, that thing about scared

the scheiss out of me. I punched it going about 60, tranny downshifted

and the rear tires screeched and let go, I backed off then and said
"good enough for me."

I have my dad's 96 Chevy truck now, with the 305. He got the smaller
engine when he bought it thinking it would be easier on gas, but there
is really no difference between it, my old Blazer, and the 2000 Burb
with the 5.3. The 305 is same as 350 with just different stroke I
 think.

2008-02-12 Thread Gary Hurst
rusty insisted i give him my best .38 for his son's old diesel 240. the gun
is $750 band new, so maybe 400 as is.

now my 3" stainless chiefs special is on the way to gone, so i have to carry
the giant old model 19 down my pants. this would have been a typical
service pistol 50 years ago, so it's a pretty tight fit.

wonder 9s and 40s are sweet and `1911s have manly style, but there is still
something cool about an old school .38, no?

Re: [MBZ] MBTex/leather interiors on eBay - reputable?

2008-02-12 Thread R A Bennell
Would ultimately like to do that. As I said, the carpet is getting a bit crispy.

Going off on a tangent, are the interior upholstery pieces available
individually or just as the whole set? I
wonder what color match would be like with old stuff. I have a hole in the seat
on the driver side base because the
horsehair pad wore out and the previous owners didn't do anything to protect
the cover from the springs. I have
since repaired the base with the means shown on one of the websites but did not
try to repair the small hole.

$550 for Tex seat covers is something I would definitely consider after I
get the more important things sorted out like the AC compressor and
radiator. I think that the Tex holds up much better than leather. Are the
door panels Tex in all cars, or do the cars with leather seats also have
leather on the door panels?

For the price of a good used fender, he'll throw the rest of the car in, and
deliver to your house too. :-) I'm not 100%, but I thought we had '86 D's

[MBZ] OT: New Subaru diesel

First in-depth story I've seen about Subaru's first-in-the-world boxer
diesel engine. Same horsepower rating as their normally aspirated
gasoline four, but nearly twice the torque. Nice.

personally accomplished the final work ticket items. Did I ever mention
that my motto is "why do it right the first time?".

I guess Rusty could defeat the "$75.01" game by lowering his prices so much
that it would be almost impossible to assemble an order costing more than
$75.00, thus requiring "value shoppers" to pay a hated shipping charge.
Diabolical!!

I have a picture of one (911 with a small block), but not sure I can
post

a
lot easier to just rebuild what the car came with.

I have a picture of one (911 with a small block), but not sure I can post
here. A friend is thinking about a small block in his 928, but I think a
lot easier to just rebuild what the car came with.

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Tom Hargrave
"Free shipping" is based on order amount because "free shipping" is used
to motivate customers to buy more. It's the same with my business. I
offer $10 off any order $125 and up or $25 off any order $250 and up.
And because of these specials, the majority of my orders fall into the
$125 - $150 and $250 - $300 ranges.

I used to do the same with orders to Rusty when the 300SDL was my main
driver. I'd order parts and would add in oil & fuel filters to reach the
"free shipping" point. This really is the best way to order from Rusty
anyway, regardless of who is really paying for shipping. Once you pay to
ship the part you need, you pay very little extra to throw in a few
filters and a can of diesel purge.

Thanks, Tom

Subject: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

Tom,

You are right on target! Remember TANSTAAFL?

"Free" is one of the most overused terms in all advertising! The
more appropriate statement would be "Orders over $99 shipped at no
direct charge to you." We all should know that those $'s are
somewhere in the "cost of doing business" and incorporated into "mark
up".

Personally, I would rather just pay the product price plus the going
UPS/USPS/FedEx shipping cost.

As a business owner, I certainly would want to know how much my "free
shipping" costs are (% of total $'s of orders over $99) and spread
that cost when pricing my products.

One more thought - Actual shipping costs are based on weight and
volume (size of box). Why is "free" shipping based on order amount?
Just an inquiring mind!

Take care,

Chuck

Don't know the history of it. My guess is some kind of minor
collision, maybe someone backed into the door in a parking lot or
something. Seems to have been repainted, and now is rusting. That

Hope these tide you over until I take more. The car came from Allan, by the
way, so some of you have probably already seen it before.

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Tom Hargrave
I handle my online shiping issue by offering $$$ off orders over $125.
But even with this, I still get "will you give me free freight on this
order? XYZ company will."

I always respond with "No problem at all but let me adjust your price to
their selling price first and remove the discount I just gave you."

Some still don't undertstand and I ask the m to shop at XYZ company.

Thanks, Tom

We only offer "free" shipping because my %%$$##@@ competitors do. Before

there were 42,976 other people doing this we charged shipping on all
orders.
I wish we still did, we spend an enormous amount on shipping.
