Re: [MBZ] Was Speedy Gonzalez, Now timing chain and rails

2009-02-21 Thread harry watkins
Wilton, I think this is a 617 engine but there are many tips and pictures
that may add to your pile of information.

http://www.dieselgiant.com/replacetimingchain.htm

Seems like I remember someone used bungy cords. They were attached to the
hood and regripped ever so often to keep the chain tight all the way
through.

Harry

Yeah, I thought somebody was gonna jump on that. Before I commit to the
Indy, I'll read some of the procedures/tips you guys have written. I may
have to do it myself, anyway. Any tips, steps, procedures?

Finking out? After replacing the evaporator? I've replaced the chain in

615,

616, and 617 engines, and replaced the heater fan in a 115 chassis. The
chain is a lot easier. Just keep it tight on the cam sprocket - I used

wire.

Go slow and carefull - not a problem. It did take a while to peen the new
link - a heper to hold the backing bar would be nice.

Our spread has dropped recently, but then it went back up a little.

$1.989 for regular, $2.249 for diesel.

I usually polish the slip rings with a pencil style typing eraser. You can
tell if they're rough then.
(Do they still these? Don't know what I'll do when this one is finally worn
down to nothing).

Hi Wilton,

Maybe you can walk us through the timing chain change when you do it. Are
there any neat tools to hold the cams in place when you remover the chain,
or do you follow the procedure I read about one, where you feed the new
chain onto the link of the old, and feed it through? Have to be real
careful with one, so as not to skip any teeth I could imagine. ;-)

2009-02-21 Thread Peter Frederick
You usually have to push the new brushes up to get them on the slip
rings, but the regulator should fit into the hole with ease.

There are other problems beside a bad regulator, though -- worn slip
rings that eat the new brushes off very quickly, and internal shorts,
etc., but none of those usually result in an overcharged battery.

If you cannot get the new regulator in correctly, I'd replace the
alternator.

Re: [MBZ] Viton tubing for injector return lines

2009-02-21 Thread dave walton
The cloth type self-destruct on removal. According to Mercedes, you
should NEVER reuse them.

Re: [MBZ] Blower control unit

2009-02-21 Thread Archer

Does anyone know how to get the blower speed control unit and the
temperature control unit out of an '83 300D Turbo without taking out
the dash cover?

Gerry

I believe they just unplug from their socket. They're very
replaceable, anyway. No need to take out the dash or anything
like that. The power resistors do get hot. Not blued metal
case hot, though.
-- Jim

Unplug all wiring and check for continuity again. This will make sure
it's not a wiring issue.
Luther

Thanks Jim, Luther. Was afraid the units might be bolted in where I
couldn't get to them.

Sincerely,
Gerry
