My friendly local used car dealer was telling about the time they took a trade

bring it in tomorrow. After the deal was done and money changed hands, the guy
produced a salvage title for the trade in a couple of days later. The dealer

If you plan on keeping it until it's worthless, I guess you have to look at the

Yeah, I don't know about the V-12 XKE, but the XJS was notorious for melting
electrical bits, cracked vacuum lines, etc. etc. due to the low hood. The

2010-05-10 Thread LWB250
I don't know about the later V12s, but the early XJ sedans were normally
aspirated as opposed to fuel injected, and those six side draft Solexs were a
real PITA to keep synchronized.  I know the 1978 model would have been right up
there when it came to pollution control hardware, but I don't recall any
problems related to that with the one I worked on.

Back in the early 80s I worked for a guy who had eight Jags - I spent more time
taking care of cars than I did generators.  His 1978 XJ12 was a nice car, but a
real bear to work on and maintain.  I never had to do one but I heard stories
about having to almost remove the whole front clip to RR the water pump on
that car.

He had a late 60s XKE with the 4.2 liter six that I rebuilt.  That was a BA
car, for sure.

One nice perk - I was allowed to drive any of the cars home in the evening if I
wanted.  The wife and I went out on numerous occasions to the theater and opera
in the XJ12.  The only negative was the gas mileage.  That thing had two 16
gallon tanks for a reason

Re: [MBZ] OT Garage Door issues

2010-05-10 Thread R A Bennell
That sounds like good advice. I am running into other issues too with the new
opener so have ordered some different
parts to lower the door. Going to try the quick turn brackets on the top panel
as they say that will provide me
with an extra 2 inches. I only need about an inch. If that does not work well,
I will get the double track so, in
either event, I am going to have it apart again. I may then move the tracks
over a bit to give a bit more play.
That might do the trick.

The track roller shafts are supposed to slide in and out on the
brackets. If the brackets are too close to the tracks, the shafts
may not have enough room to slide. To me that is a very likely cause.

With the door down, check the gap side and see if the upper roller
shafts are jammed to the brackets. the bottom roller brackets on the
tight side should also be jammed as far in as they go.

There may be some adjustment to slide the brackets in toward the
center of the door.

1. they are pretty good that way. I have been checking with the
level and there might be a little variation, but
not much between left and right sides. I also checked at lunch time
and the left side is plumb but the right side
leans a bit toward the door. Not much though.

2. not sure what you mean by axles and wheels. Are you thinking
torsion spring setup with the cable winding drums
as wheels and the main pipe accross the top as axles or are you
thinking of the wheels that run inside the
tracks? If the latter, they move on their own as they are
essentially free to shift back and forth.

Unfortunately, adjusting the torsion spring stufff is time
consuming as the springs must be unwound before
anything can be moved about. When the door is down it is under a
fair amount of tension and when up, one cannot
really get to it as it is above the door.

It has to relate to the tracks and or springs in some manner as the
door panels were shimmed level before the rest
of the hardware was installed. It fit fine until I started testing
the up and down function. Then it tilted a bit.
As I said, I have tried tensioning the left spring a bit more than
the right on the assumption that might be what
was holding the right side higher but it does not seem to have made
much difference.

Just anxious to get the door reasonably right as I also need to
install a new opener and I don't want to do that
until I am happy with the door.

Thanks for your input.

1. Make sure the tracks are perpendicular to the floor.
2. Can you adjust the length of the axles on the wheels?
for instance, if the left side of the door is off the ground, can you shorten
the upper left axles/lengthen the right upper axles and make rotate the door a
bit to the left?

Use a 4' level, a little plumber's level is too short. If the bottom of

The torsion springs may not be the cause. The cables each go to a
drum on opposite ends of the rod that the spring acts on. If one side
has slack w/r/t the other, that side will sit low.

Lower it and release all of the torsion. Leave the spring loose

Verify that it sits right.

Have a helper hold one drum fixed so that the cable has zero slack.
Loosen the other drum and make sure it has zero slack, then reclamp it.

Carefully set the torsion on each side, but since the torsion acts on
an axle that the drums are on, it will only affect whether it doesn't
go all the way down...

Once they are set up, it is great, but sometimes you have to redo the
setup after the first cycle. Maybe the cables stretch a bit and one
does it more than the other...

It should be simple but it is proving to be difficult. I was very

Hi George,
I did the front end in my uncle's 300TD last year and found that the
lower control arms had corrosion where the bushings fit and was no
longer clean, round, etc. I exchanged the bushings to the dealer for
new control arms since I couldn't see the possibility of installing
the new bushings in these corroded holes.

So, I'm more curious about the condition of the control arms in your
case... are they really clean shiny metal where the bushing slides in?

After my experience, I decided that most cars this old will probably
have the same issue and I should only consider buying new control arms
in the future. They were not that much more expensive, considering
the time they can save.

Did you soap up (or otherwise lube) the bushings? That helps them
go in easier, maybe straighter?

You jest, but on the other hand someone posted here an eBay auction a few
months back for an SLC with a 617 in it (a 300SLDC?), and that was thought
to be impossible due to the low hood.

If you were going to klatta-ize a Jag, I think it'd be easier to start with
one of the many kits avalable to fit a Chevy 350, and then put in one of the
diesels that can bolt up to the same mounts and tranny, such as a GM 6.5
turbo or a Cummins 4BT.

[MBZ] W124 prices advise please ?

2010-05-10 Thread E M
Hey Everyone,

Decided to part with the old W124. It's an '88, with 360,000 kms. I've let
it sit, so it needs a new battery. Rotors a bit rusty too, but I have new
ones and pads. Biggest thing, needs valve guides. The body and interior is
very clean. Some rust starting around the jack points. I suspect a
previous repair not done as well as it should have been.

Anyway, I consider such a car as it now sits, to be a project car. That's
how I'll advertise it. Any thoughts on what I should ask? Realistic
prices, this is a project in my eyes now, so I don't expect to get much, as
I wouldn't pay much for a project either. Old mercedes are a dime a dozen
here too, so lots to pick from for those in the market.

Anyway, your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

The 6.2 or 6.5 might fit most places a 5.7 gasser will go, but a 4BT/6BT is a
TALL truck engine. Maybe a 6AT, which I believe is around 3.5-4.0L, and several
inches less tall than a B series?

All of the om617's do.
It is on the end of the injection pump nearest the oil filter housing,
and it looks like a bolt with a nut that's screwed into the end of the
pump

Do you have the updated rack damper bolt? The new ones are gold
colored and are SIGNIFICANTLY stiffer than the silver ones.

You shouldn't have to mess with idle speed.

What about the primer pump? Do you see any air bubbles in the lines?

2010-05-10 Thread LWB250
I am simply amazed at how sloppy a major new outlet can be these days.  For
example, this was on the home page of the Indianapolis Star this afternoon,
covering the possible closure of some Indiana National Guard locations:

Indian Guard says 3 armories will close
Tell City, Delphi and New Castle targeted; more than 150 soldiers, staffers to
transfer to other sites. - 4:09 PM

2010-05-10 Thread George Larribeau

Thank you everyone .
A Shop near work in Carrollton Texas, Arthur’s Mercedes-Benz Service
pressed them on and sold me one new busshing, ( I trashed one) used one
part that I supplied

the total bill was less that $90 I will remember them.

I have The right side arms are in , steering knuckle , spring in, shock in.
Right side has ams in, spindle in , will install spring tomorrow ??
then breaks, front wheel bearings, one abs sensor and some misc stuff
that I took off for access.

PS silicone spray is great stuff .
A swimming pool supply company Leslies sells this silicone grease for o-
rings that is made by Dow Corning, it is the closest stuff I have found
to chemistry lab vacuum grease. Great stuff on rubber parts.

It was going better than planed at firts, got the upper new control
arms installed, got the old ball joints pounded out of the
knuckles, and the new ones pressed in .(spring compressor and ball
joint press rented from Rusty (well - Tom Rusty is in our prayers)..
then came the lower control arms, removed pushed out the old bushing
and then (failure) I as of yet have been unable to completely install
the new lower control arm bushings. I got the center piece in and one
of the ends went on but the other end always would miss-aline and I
can not get it to go on straight. I started the job by using running
thread and bolts, washers, sockets and the like. but the last end
would not go on, spent 2 hours at a neighborers, using a press, in
the end I trashed the bushing.

Ant known tricks, the MB wkis have some exotic tooling ...

Does any one in the Dallas Texas aered know on an Indy shop that
would install bushings in controlars that were delivered (with out
the car)?

Tip for silicone grease, get the permatex silicone dielectric grease from
the FLAPS, it's amazing for anything electrical/vac/assembly related and
holds up nicely.

Glad to hear you got em in, and ya can't beat that price. :)

My 2 cents,

Walt
