Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com writes: I had a student a couple weeks ago on Republic. Sprint network when not using wi-fi right? Only a couple choices of phones too if I remember right. Still for the price I suspect its worth it. I don't think I have a contract with Verizon since my phone was grandfathered from the company. I should seriously think about dumping the big V and go with Republic. I had a Sprint phone before and the coverage was fine around here. I just bought the Moto G through Republic Wireless last month. Your other choice is Moto X. Yeah I guess that's limited compared to other carriers but how many different choices do you need in Android phones, really? It has the latest Android (KitKat) and a decent camera. It's my first smartphone. All in all I'm happy, so far. I'm on the $10/month for voice and text plan. It does use the Sprint network for cellular, and Wifi for data. Uses wifi for calls too when it can, which is great because cellular service is very marginal at my house. That was actually the main attraction of Republic for me. Calls over WiFi are not perfect, especially if a lot of other activity is happening on the network (e.g. a couple of kids on netflix or youtube). It's pretty agressive about falling back to cellular if WiFi quality is poor (this happens seamlessly) but I had to disable that on my home network because there's really no cellular to fall back to. Supposedly a good router with QoS capabilities can help, but if I have to go drop $200 on a new router I've defeated some of the savings. So I'm holding off, at least until I need a new router for some other reason. Yes, my 300D has 2 pans - one under the engine and another under the tranny. Wow! $20 for a W140 pan sounds like a awesome deal! I thought the pans were hard to come by or I would not have mentioned it. BTW I neglected to mention the seller was the company i bought my 1st Evaporator from - the one that leaked. I thought they would really give me a hard time but then ended up asking for a photo of the evap which I gave them with a arrow added to show the leak location.. The Toyota was having an equally tough time, he'd pointed his truck up the hill and was crabbing sideways up the road. I was having no difficulty at all, I had the 190D in 2nd and was idling up the hill. Finally the Thunderbird spun out, I nudged the go-pedal and navigated around him and just behind the Toyota. As I passed him the Toyota finally lost it and slid down the hill into the Thunderbird effectively blocking the entire road. I gave the 190D a little more go, grabbed third and never saw another vehicle behind me the rest of the way home. I already knew snow tires were worth it but after that I was completely sold. [MBZ] Not the best
Since its a glorious day I decided to take that Dodge with the Cummins for a ride. Out on the road it wanders like a bastard. Clearly something is loose in the front end. I didn't expect it to drive like an MB but better than this. I was also surprised how much pedal it took to get moving. On the plus side it shifts good on the minus it's LOUD. It's got a KN like air filter that I don't think is stock and while it doesn't seem to have the dreaded cracking 53 block the engine is pretty greasy. It also seems to have the stock fuel pump which isn't great if you want to keep the IP happy. Anyway I got maybe 5 minutes down the road and found a good open stretch so I pulled over to try it from a standing start. No sooner did the pedal touch the floor than it started to snort and buck. I got off it but the engine clearly wasn't happy. I found a space, pulled off and called 'em, your truck is broke. Turns out the owner (not the yard rat I'd talked to knew it was short on fuel. I'd noticed the light was on but the gauge is just under 1/8 so I figured it was okay. So here I sit with a dead truck. He says he's coming with fuel, we'll see how it goes. Probably true. Supply and demand has a lot to do with it too I guess. I bought mine here where there are very few. You folks were buying them cheap down in the USA where there tended to be a lot more of them. I suspect, unfortunately, that there are a lot fewer now as people don't take care of them and treat them as beaters or try to run the waste oil through them and beat them up in that manner. Re: [MBZ] adjusting valves
I have no real fear of doing it. It is a bit of a dirty job but I have become a nitrile glove believer so I should avoid getting black fingers if I am careful. I have done valve adjustments on many vehicles over the years but never on the diesel. It no doubt has needed it for a long while and I hope to notice a difference. One of the issues is hard starting once it starts to cool off in the fall and I believe that is an indication that the valves are likely too tight. My past experience with gas engines required one to turn to the specific timing marks etc. The advice offered on the diesels seemed to be just to turn the cam so that the point sticks up. Re: [MBZ] Not the best
Probably not the best idea to buy it if you don't really need it. I really wanted to try a diesel truck but I really do not need a 3/4 ton and so I stayed away. I am hopeful that the new 1/2 ton Dodge with the smaller diesel will prove to be a good truck and that the other manufacturers will get on board and start producing something similar. Although, it is hard to complain about the gas engines these days. My 02 F150 had no real issues with the engine and so far I like the engine in the 2013 F150. Not sure the diesel would be any cheaper to run these days with diesel costing more than gasoline. I brewed a batch of hoppy brown ale on Sunday, my buddy made a porter or a stout or something, it is dark. His started foaming quite quickly after I pitched the yeast but mine was doing nothing. So on Monday I took a coupla ounces from his carboy and put it in mine, within an hour it was starting to bubble and has been going big. Not sure what kind of yeast he had, but whatever... Science! My stash is getting low, I have a few bottles of porter left, a Bells Two-hearted IPA clone, and some of the IPA I brewed with cherry wood shavings from milling up wood for my cabinets, and fermented separately. The CherryPA is amazing, very subtle aromatic cherry flavor and the basic beer is really good too on these warm summer's eves (and it smells good too, very fresh!). I don't recall if it's been mentioned but (1) always turn the crank shaft in the direction of normal rotation and (2) it's easiest to turn the crank shaft by turning the power steering pump nut (vs the actual crank shaft nut). Re: [MBZ] Not the best
Is this not the pot calling the kettle black? You don't NEED a pickup at all, a car with a trailer would do you fine. You WANTED a truck which is something I can totally understand. The Dodge was way more truck than I need and we probably could get away with a car or small SUV but considering the mpg penalty of 4wd (not AWD, a softroader won't do) anyway a pickup is really handy. So the story ends that it was just out of fuel. The guy came with fuel and then we had to purge it. He'd been through this before and the yard monkey wasn't supposed to let me drive it in the first place. Apparently the gauge is optimistic. Truck drives a lot better with fuel in, it felt much more powerful and was easier to drive once I got used to it but it still needed front end work. Just when I felt like I had everything under control it would go all over the road... I sat in a Dakota at the same place but it was blocked in and the guy was already having a bad day so I decided to leave it. The tailgate doesn't have any non-broken hold up straps and wouldn't stay latched. The engine makes a funny little noise which might be just the belt, but the AC blows ICE COLD (which the diesel Ram didn't). It appears to be AWD with 4wd as an option which I thought was odd. Instant fuel mileage reads 12mpg which if its really AWD considering it has a 360ci is probably right. All in all I think this is probably pushing me back toward a new truck. -Curt From: Randy Bennell rbenn...@bennell.ca To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Wednesday, July 9, 2014 12:25 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Not the best Probably not the best idea to buy it if you don't really need it. Oh. I can position the cam shaft faster and more precisely by slowly turning the PS pump pulley with a socket wrench. My 1976 300D that I owned in 1983 - 1984 had an auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk, holding 12 or 15 gallons IIRC. Only needed to fillerup once per month. Either you're making a strange joke or you're the strangest person I know. Its too much work to put a ratchet on the power steering pump? Re: [MBZ] Not the best
NEED is a term that requires defining. I have made 5 trips to the lake so far since May. It is about 175 miles each way. We are always hauling something in one direction or the other. The cottage is old and I am trying to renovate but it is a slow process. My mother stays out there all summer but is 82 now so I don't want her to worry about the boat if it is stormy or rains a lot. Therefore we don't leave the boat in all the time. It gets launched and retrieved every time. This year the water is so high that we don't even leave it in over night when we are there. The dock is 2 feet under. The current boats are a 16 footer with an outboard and a 20 footer with an inboard outboard. Most cars these days are not really built to tow things like the boats. It might do it, but I would not want to use a car like my wife's Honda Accord to retrieve either of the boats. I also live in a winter climate. Last winter we had a lot of snow. My good wife gets around with the Honda with good winter tires. I truly prefer having the 4 wheel drive at my disposal. So, do I NEED a truck? Maybe not but it sure is nice. AND the supercrew with the big back seat and 4 doors and the tonneau cover on the box is really just a big car with a big trunk. I have a friend who is trying to sell a 2010 Lincoln Town Car and if I had a parking spot for it and some spare cash, I would be tempted. I think 2011 was the last year for those big rear drive LIncolns. This one is burgundy with a tan interior and has about 65K miles on it. I could have it for about $14K. I have also been tempted to buy one of the last Crown Victoria police interceptors. The local police are moving on to the Taurus and there are lots of the big police cars being auctioned off. I don't suppose the mileage would be much better than my truck with either the Lincoln or the Ford, but it should be able to pull a bigger trailer than the Honda. Although, I might look a bit odd hauling lumber down the highway behind a Town Car. I don't have a spare spot to park the trailer that I would need without the truck either. I could leave an old truck at the lake so that we could launch and retrieve without driving a truck back and forth to the city but that would mean another vehicle to maintain and insure. We did that for a while. I had an old Chevy pickup for a long while and it was out at the lake for its last few years with us. I also left the 4Runner out there for a summer. Still an issue of what we haul with us to and from the lake. A nice old MB diesel wagon with a small utility trailer might do but those are getting harder to come by in usable condition. I cannot say I want a mini-van. So, I do think that so far, I can justify the truck but I did not need a 3/4 ton and I did not buy one. I drove the 02 Supercrew for the previous 8 years or so and I liked it so I got another one. I did so partly because I wanted to offer the 02 to my younger son before it was totally worn out. If I had more parking spots and some spare cash, I could see myself with a Honda Civic to get to and from the office. However, I could actually walk in reasonable weather as I can almost see my house from here. So, I may not NEED a vehicle at all. I could ride to the lake with my son and send my good wife on errands with her car, and walk to and from work and be free of all the mechanical headaches that come with ownership. BUT what fun would that be? I wouldn't be able to post questions about how to adjust the valves etc. Randy On 09/07/2014 12:39 PM, Curt Raymond wrote: Is this not the pot calling the kettle black? All in all I think this is

The engine makes a funny little noise which might be just the belt,

[MBZ] Boxford?
Hey, How far are you from Boxford? I'm debating heading there to buy a marine stove: http://nh.craigslist.org/spo/4542124579.html I can't imagine anyone taking that thing camping but its probably worth what he's asking. I found a picture online of one cleaned up and it was pretty, the tank is brass... Anyway I'm debating, if I could get him to like $40 I'd probably do it. Re: [MBZ] Not the best
You don't have to justify your purchase with me, you wanted the truck, you have the means to support the truck, you got the truck, fine and dandy. Sounds like you're pretty well self actualized though. Some friends needed and SUV a few years ago have never realized they didn't need it. Now they're complaining about how the SUV is more expensive to maintain than their car... -Curt From: Randy Bennell rbenn...@bennell.ca To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Wednesday, July 9, 2014 6:21 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Not the best NEED is a term that requires defining. Kent Bergsma had a you tube video how to for valve adjustments that I can't find now. He showed how the big nut should be turned until the largest gap is found, and then you adjust the gap to spec, and then double check by rotating that big nut around again. [MBZ] Car rolls back in park
A few months ago my '83 300D would occasionally refuse to start. I would move the shift lever out of park, move it back into park, and then it would start. Yesterday the car rolled back when I put it in park. I can't get it to engage. I'm guessing the problem is in the linkage or the shifter mechanism, but I don't know which part I should check first. Has anyone else had that problem? Re: [MBZ] Car rolls back in park
There are two sets of plastic bushings. One set at each end of the round rod that connects the shifter to the transmission and another set on the shifter shaft where it pivots fore and aft. With new/good bushings it will be tight and smooth as butter. On the other hand it could be an internal problem (parking pawl) in the transmission. -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Peter Frederick Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2014 11:43 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Car rolls back in park Shifter linkage bushings have died and fallen out. Many thanks, folks. I seem to remember that a special tool is needed or one can be assembled out of washers and a (bolt?) I tried to replace those same bushings on the '83 240D stick-shift without success, but still have the bushings which might be the same since both cars are '83 123s.
