Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Swap
Yes, many years ago; 'don't remember a lot of it. 'Oughta read it again. Wilton Cap'n Eddie the race car driver never had a driver's license, even in the 60s. Before WWI (the war to end all wars) no DL was needed Afterward, he was so famous. He said if he got stopped he pulled out the gold 'Merkun Legion membership card the Legion had given him and showed it to johnny law. Johnny, on reading the name on the card, would strike up a conversation with the war hero driver/pilot and never ask for a real driver's license. Re: [MBZ] Max's bandaids Was: Prepping for the Q.
My '84 190D had more repair than original pipe. I had already replaced the section with the mufflers but the section from the manifold to the mufflers was just tinfoil. When I started I'd wrap it with some thin metal and weld that on. By the end I bought repair pieces from FLAPS and welded them in. I finally got tired of it and replaced the pipes when it failed 3 times in one week each time just beyond where I had put in my last repair... I've got a snowmobile muffler I've been repairing for years, a replacement pipe is more expensive than the whole machine. Once the snow flies this year that one is for sale, I've already got its replacement. -Curt From: Curly McLain via MercedesTo: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Curly McLain <126die...@gmail.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 15, 2015 11:46 PM Subject: [MBZ] Max's bandaids Was: Prepping for the Q. >This is when a lift would be nice to have. My rusty 240D has lotsa banaids and hose clamps. So many that I had to use coathangers to hold it up in the middle. It would sag between the bandaids and hang down and scrape the pavement. I need a new front section some year if the car lasts that long. On my 110s, the vibration would crack the pipe in front of the muffler, sometimes ruining the muffler. At the time, welch's grape juice came in a 6 oz. smooth side steel can. Those made perfect bandaids for the small OM621 exhaust pipe. I got to where I'd never try to have the pipes put together as designed. I'd use the can and 2 hose clamps to make a "flexible coupling" and never again had a muffler ruined. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The classic center has some really lovely fuel hose, BTW. Jaime Grainger USED to have a ferrule crimper that would do fuel hose, air hose up to garden hose. You had to buy each size ferrule separately. I had one in Hawaii that I used to make up air hoses to the correct length for each application, and sometimes fix a water hose. I wish I had brought it along. Grainger does not sell them and I can't find any place that does. It is almost a "must have" around a food plant. I did notice the local shop that makes up hoses also has one (manual) in addition to the hydraulic one they use for hydraulic hoses and larger low pressure hoses. it has an upper and lower half with several different sizes, and a handle that squeezes the two crimper halves together to crimp the ferrule. One of them would be very handy for someone like you Jaime, or kleb that has a lot of cars. Mine are functional only, so I don't care if they have SS worm clamps. For me it is a lot easier to open the worm clamp to change the hose the second or third time. This can be dangerous! Another excuse to buy a tool! http://acehose.com/brass-hose-fittings-couplings.htm Wow! $300 for the crimper for small hose? We need to get HF to make in China for $39 with a starter set of ferrules. None of these are as good as the Grainger one. It had more sizes and was about $125 in 1990 or so. But it is wonderful to have one. 40-50 years ago a lot of FLAPS and hose shops had them and it was not expensive to have the ends crimped on. Now, thanks to the walton mentality, it is all about selling you a $15 hose in place of a buck hose and a buck fitting and providing the service of crimping on the fitting with a ferrule. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Prepping for the Q.
Dwight sez: Well menu has Karen's famous, clam chowder as usual & Curt's chicken & his beef. New this year will be steamed, hardshell clams. Tell him we don't judge on car condition. Also veggies & fruit & the longest running MB informal gathering in New England. And MOST IMPORTANTLY - nice people who love Benzes. Unfortunately I won't be there this year. Sounds like good food and good fun. I am intrigued about this sentence: MOST IMPORTANTLY - nice people who love Benzes. Are ya importing some Southerners or Westerners? Where are these Nice people coming from? I thought y'all noreasters there were either feisty, terse, curmudgeonly or some other form of social misfits. (Just teasin) Best wishes for your event! Too bad Lt don went AWOL. I'd a liked to see his Q be an annual thing. Not as much list member density around him though. Maybe next year you can take it on the road and venture further south and west to allow more "nice" folks time to get there. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Are Exide batteries any good?
Not really relevant to me this week. I have a bad battery in the 4matic but I'm just going to use the 2003 Johnson/Autozone from the 300SD, but is this a good deal? Exide group 49 Global Extreme, 40 month free replacement warranty, $115 at Menards through Sept 27th: http://www.menards.com/main/p-2783768-c-9100.htm?tid=8507614064172518297 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Are Exide batteries any good?
I like the Sears Diehard. Even though two of them went south on me within 2 years, they were easy to exchange under warranty. Thus the name Die EASY Those are crappy batteries. They were crappy batteries and died easily 40 years ago. No snears anywhere around to replace the dead ones either. Exide should be fine. There is a group 93(?) that is interchangeable with the same CCA, but they are cheaper. Advanced auto website will give you both choices. So you can find the group number that way. For a group 49, that is a good price. the 93 should be about $20 cheaper. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
