Possible he is listening to the tow shop that quoted him a huge repair bill
to "fix the damages" and he is not mechanical enough himself to understand
the "Upsell" that just happened..

I'm betting the quote came to over $2,000 for "transmission repairs and
damage done by the belt".. The non mechanical customer only heard bad
noises and sees transmission fluid scattered everywhere.

Go look and touch it.. first.

I'm guessing 116 or 107. If I were in the market for used I'd be
looking for 126 arms rather than anything older. If 107 arms fit,
the later 107s would be a good source too.

If you had been paying attention you would know that I am the happy, proud
owner of a set of Goform 195-70-HR-14 all season ties for my 1983 300TD.
They have good traction in wet or fry conditions (especially dry!) and give
me another 25 percent boost in fuel economy.  What's not to like?

I think it depends on how long it takes to wear them out.

I put a set of Altimax HP (440 treadwear) on my Achieva 7 1/2 years and 
26000
miles ago. They have about half the tread left, and don't stick to dry 
pavement
as well as they did new. They'll outlast my ownership of the car, but if I 
were

keeping it forever, I'd surely be replacing them before they wear out.

Sounds like what happened with my '84 190D. Scary noise, big hole in the front 
of the engine (timing chain cover), oil everywhere, mechanic didn't want to 
touch it.I got the car for $250, Fred gave me a timing chain cover. I drove it 
for 5 years, last summer I donated it to Tom's organization for which I'm 
sorry. ;)

The biggest killer in North America is heart disease. If you really want to 
save lives go there. I couldn't find any real statistics for train accidents 
that were limited to just the US but even looking at the list worldwide it was 
a really small number...
Polluting somebody's water supply might not kill them but it puts a crimp in 
their quality of life.

I don't have comparative statistics (not so easy to find unbiased info), but
my impression is that rail shipments go through populated areas and have
killed many people. One incident I read about in Quebec killed 47. The stuff
I read about pipelines is that they pollute when there are leaks, and that
the leaks are fewer, but spill more oil. My bias goes to saving more lives.

Depends on how you define dangerous. Pipelines leak and spill oil, one of
the big concerns the Keystone folks tried to ignore in Nebraska was
sensitive ecosystems. They claimed their poop don't stink...

The important thing is that rail transport of petroleum is dangerous. Look
at the number of disasters this has caused. Pipeline is much safer. The oil
will be moved somehow.

We have too much crude on hand and not enough ability to process it for 
domestic use.  At current prices (retail) the industry loses money if that 
floods the market.  The consumer is at the mercy of the industry.   petro folks 
can not stop production or reduce it more than it is at the moment.  Product 
has to go someplace.

Yeah more or less the same thing. I believe there were just minor 
timing and carburetion differences.


That engine was also used in the bus. That might be an 
interesting car to get. I have a 6 cyl 911 engine with 5 speed 
transmission in an 82 bus that would fit into there right easy 
and probably make it go just a bit better.

to go find my "For the Complet idiot" book. I think that sounds vaugely right. 
The engine is only a relative cousin to the upright engine in the Beetle 
anyway, more like the pancake engine in the Type 3. I *think* the Type 4 engine 
is the same as in the late bus.

I think it depends on how long it takes to wear them out. 

I put a set of Altimax HP (440 treadwear) on my Achieva 7 1/2 years and 26000
miles ago. They have about half the tread left, and don't stick to dry pavement
as well as they did new. They'll outlast my ownership of the car, but if I were
keeping it forever, I'd surely be replacing them before they wear out.

That happened to me once in the '90 300D 2.5T - nick in alternator pulley
shredded the belt. Replaced the tranny cooling hose, belt, pulley,
re-filled the tranny, and it was good for another 50,000 miles when I sold
it.

Oops, here's somebody who thinks it's only 1981-1984 W126 arms that directly
swap in,
says something about newer ones having a more advanced setup to deal with brake
dive
and squat, so you have to replace it all if you use the newer setup.

There is some variation on length of auctions.  I much preferred the one day 
live with humans bidding against each other.  You could look at the product for 
obvious issues.  Otherwise the product is AS IS.  I have yet to get too screwed

I purchased Kumho Sense and Goform tires for my 300TDs and have no
complaints whatsoever.  OTOH, I don't drive 50K miles/year either, more
like 7.5k miles.  For mounting Just Tires has good coupon deals
occasionally, around $12 per tire IIRC.

My last tire problem was in 1971; none since buying my first Michelin then; 
10+ cars/vans and well over a million miles since.  Uh-oh!  'Hope I didn't 
just jinx it.  Part of the value of a car & tires is feeling comfortably 
safe, especially while at 75+ mph cruise.

26000
miles ago. They have about half the tread left, and don't stick to dry

You know what I just remembered, I never did get around to putting in an auto 
antenna lock out. Back when I had a car with a working auto antenna I found 
that if it was very cold out or we'd had sleet or freezing rain the dang thing 
would get frozen down. No amount of siliconcarne spray would help it.
I figured the best solution would be to put a toggle switch at the antenna that 
would leave it up for the winter...

Other than a black car in a nasty hot climate, i see nothing that 
scares me except the missing air cleaner.  I'd want to know how long 
that has been missing.   If the air cleaner was in place, Id say 
nothing there scares me.   M103 is perhaps the last of the DIY 
repairable engines

good tranny 75, put the bad parts in the dump and drive a good car.   
Runs like a top, really, but there is no longer much below the

[MBZ] HID Bulb replacement

Bought a pair of 4300k D2R bulbs off eBay for my 1997 S420. I believe it was Mr
Cathey who said that the stock bulbs were 4300K.

Last summer, I could plainly see that there was a wire bail holding the bulbs
in, but could not figure out how to unclip it. 
Finally today I put on my reading glasses and could see that the right side of
the bail had to move in and down to unclip. 
Pulled the dead OSRAM out, put in the new Chinese POS, and to my eye the old
Phillips on one side looks identical to the new Chinese. 
$8 a pair is a lot cheaper than $40 each. 

One interesting thing that happened was I could see smoke rolling around in the
headlight when I first turned it on, and it smelled like toasted electronics.
The 2nd time I turned it on, no smoke. Seems like there should be no oil or
other smoke producing residue on a brand new bulb. 

The halogen high beams sure look yellow next to the HID low beams.

first with a paper towel and alcohol!

You know what I just remembered, I never did get around to putting 
in an auto antenna lock out. Back when I had a car with a working 
auto antenna I found that if it was very cold out or we'd had sleet 
or freezing rain the dang thing would get frozen down. No amount of 
siliconcarne spray would help it.
I figured the best solution would be to put a toggle switch at the 
antenna that would leave it up for the winter...

Easy.  Put it up and pull the plug in the trunk.  It stays up.  In 
the spring, IF you feel llke it, you can plug it in again...or not.

[MBZ] Merry Holiday, just divested myself of used MB parts

SWMBA arrived the other day from the Great White North of America.  I had taken 
over much of the abode with a myriad of MB bits and bobs.  An unhappiness 
ensued which led to the dismissal of most of my car parts.

I just got done loading a gentleman's F150 long bed with the bulk of parts for 
cars of the W110-W140 era.  I made out like a bandit!  About $4k worth of parts 
all for $500.  This should make the next ten days bearable for me.  Then SWMBA 
will depart once more to the land of midday dark for another six months.

Gotta throw the b.s. flag on that, relative is an engineer "in the 
business" and explained how the oil is sent in measured slugs, water 
between slugs, and the size of each slug is known and transmitted to 
the receiving end.  When somebody's slug is short, they immediately 
know they have a problem, usually even before receiving the slug 
they would see a pressure drop.  The valve timing at the receiving 
end has to be very precise to separate the slugs.  "This is Joey's 
oil, goes into that tank.  Next is Bob's oil, goes into this tank" 
24 / 7 operation, somebody (usually many somebody's) are there ALL 
the time, making sure the oil goes to the right place.

that is true.  In my limited experience with a propane pipeline, the 
operators immediately saw the drop in pressure, but instead of 
calling out crews to shut off the valves, they decided at 2 am it was 
easier to blame the pressure drop on instrumentation than to call out 
2 guys to shut off 2 valves.  The result was 3-4 dead.  Neighbors had 
to  find the valves, cut the chains and shut off the valves


The resultant explosion was heard 80 to 100 miles away.  Any 
surviving wildlife cleared out for a mile or two around, and it was
