[MBZ] What's this car worth?

2018-05-16 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Tricky business: BAT nice pastel gray 280E, super boring but slightly
rare. Some rust yet otherwise clean. Totally not a collector car --- or
is it?

Let's see who can guess the closest. I predict $4150.

[MBZ] Very odd electrical issue in SDL

2018-05-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I took the SDL on a road trip today and made a quick stop. When I got back
in the car and started it up, got back on the highway and set cruise everything
was fine. With the cruise in when I turned on turn signal I noticed cruise
would cut out for a quick second then kick back in. Just enough to cause a
surge. I also have the low washer fluid light on and it would blink at the same
time. Also, the acc seemed to cut out right when I hit the signal also. I tried
turning the key back off slightly while driving and it didn’t help. I did it a
couple more times and it got worse. It started cutting off and on constantly
like the low light was blinking and the srs light started blinking. Cruise
would surge off and on and acc would cut off and on. I decided to get off the
road and locate a parts store in case something was up with the battery. I
wanted to shut it off and restart it but wanted to be at a parts store in case
the battery was dead or something. As I was getting off the highway and slowing
down, as it was coming to idle the engine would buck. Like the idle control was
cutting in and out or something. When I came to a complete stop everything
returned to normal. As soon as I started moving again it starting doing the
same thing. I got to a parts store and there also was a HF across the street.
That was lucky in case I need to work on the car. I shut the car off and
started it back up without issue. After the restart everything was back to
normal with no issues. What is the common item here with all these systems? I’m
think it’s got to be the ignition switch is getting flakey. I guess I will
change it out when I get home.

Well I put a new fuel filter on and it started but was struggling to run before
now the damn thing won’t start at all. I filled the filter with fuel as when I
put the new one on it wouldn’t start and the new filter did not have any fuel
in it when I took it off again. I’m wondering if the fuel pump is inop. I
checked what seems to be the fuse under the seat and it looked ok but I did not
CHANGE THE FUSE.

The old filter looked clean and fairly new, fuel in it was clean.

This is the other weird deal, there are these staggered fuses in both boxes
(and there might be another one somewhere). So every other slot is numbered but
then in between the numbered slots are fuses of different amps that are
staggered across to other slots. One leg is where the numbered fuse is, the
other is in a middle row. I can’t figure that out, they don’t have other
numbers. I’m not sure what these are for.

[MBZ] 240 D manny $1200

2018-05-16 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
In the Mercedes W123 (North America) FB group by a guy called Anton Koncaba
Lincoln NE

Selling my 82 240D, manual everything. New looking seats out of the same year
300D. 272,000 miles, shows no sign of powertrain problems. Some rust but mostly
cosmetic, exhaust rattles and the muffler is in the trunk with most of an
exhaust to replace the current. Needs rear shocks but planning on putting some
on in a week or 2 unless a buyer is ok as is. I've been using as a daily for 9
months, block heater works great. New battery in Dec. Vacuum system needs all
new lines. Asking $1200, shittier Pontiac's go for that much. Honestly would be
a great project car, just enough is wrong that it'd be a joy to restore and
probably wouldn't cost much. Except the windshield would cost a bit, you don't
notice it while driving but it's delaminated in a couple spots you can see in
the picture.

Same here, I usually went 12,000 miles, and analysis indicated that 15,000
was easily possible. Soot was the most significant level, but was still
good in both OM602 and OM603 engines. Even with the oil sucker, I don't
like changing oil . . .

What do I do when, after removing the bolts, the alternator only wants to pivot

dislodge it?

Re: [MBZ] E300td oel and EGR?

2018-05-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So here we go again. My line of thinking has been that if you go synthetic over
Dino, can you double the internal? For example earlier engines like 617 and 603
have a factory 5k interval. Could you go 10k on those with synthetic? Later
engines such as 606 have a 7500 mile interval, so could those go 14-15k? I am
thinking so but others have said that is crazy don’t go more than 5k on M1
since it’s a group 3. If you go amsoil or one of those that’s group 4 you can
probably go 10-15k on. If I can double the interval it’s with it to me. I don’t
really need the cold start benefit. I am not sure if it’s a benefit on a 2-300k

This is with the pivot bolt completely out, I presume.

Can you get a long metal rod, place it on the alternator casting where
the pivot bolt goes through, and give it a good whack with a 2# hammer?

If that doesn't work, you would want to remove the metal which has
cold-flowed and locked it in place. I can't imagine that there is any
room to get a file or a grinder in there. Could you chuck up a small
shaft-mounted grinding stone which grinds on the end opposite the shaft
in a drill and have at it with that?

Socket? Or socket-drive allen wrench?

The latter is what is needed in this case.

That's what 13-3200hw.pdf says to do.

The spec is 100 Nm (73.8 ft-lbf). Yes, stripping out the hole would be

Tapped on the upper mounting ear of the alternator, forward then back then
forward again, with the 32oz ball peen. Opened up enough room to pull it out of
the bottom mount.

That was quick.
I'll finish taking it out when it's lighter outside in the AM, but it looks
like it is not a Bosch. Valeo?

I bought a 3 pc set at Autozone for $10 about 15 years ago.
The big one is 17mm, I think the middle one is 14mm, so the small one might be

Re: [MBZ] Here's a good solution to excess disposable income

2018-05-16 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
There was once a flying club near the University of Florida at a small field.
The members would crack the throttle on an old 40 hp J-3 Cub, prop it, and then
run around and get in before it started moving.
One day a ministerial student cracked the throttle from wide open instead of
idle, the plane started rolling, and he grabbed the end of a wing as it went by
and hung on. The plane made a full circle and ran into the side of the hangar.
The plane wasn't heavily damaged, and the student wasn't hurt, but the members
bought out his share of the flying club and suggested he take up another
pastime.

The 40 hp J-3 was an interesting plane. In a strong headwind you could almost
take off straight up. If you were flying to another town, you had better not go
if you had a strong headwind. You could run out of fuel or daylight before you
got there. That might have been because the engine wasn't in the best condition.
An auto mechanic down the road did the maintainence and rebuilds and the A and
E at the city airport signed off on them. That was back around 1960.

Autozone sells a nice socket set that has that 12mm socket. I have never heard
of putting sealant on the treads, I never have done it but I suppose it makes
sense. You can probably use whatever thread sealant is available. I’m sure
there is a spec for how tight to tighten the bolt, you want it tight but don’t
overtighten it because you don’t want to strip out the hole.

Good quality diesel oil like Delo 400 LE is cheap. I can do a complete change
with Delo 400 LE on the 95 E300D for under $35 every 5000 miles and not have
concerns. If I used Mobil1 it would be near twice the cost. Since Mobil1 is a
group 3 base stock it’s not that much better than conventional dino juice in my
opinion.

Oh yeah, if I drop another $20 on oil analysis I’ve driven my costs up even
more.

No pivots, tensioner pulley is elsewhere, but yes, both bolts completely
removed. Could get a rod as long as one of the bolts in there, but that's about
it. Fan and radiator still in place.

Would be a little afraid of breaking the mounting ear off the timing cover if I
gave it a stout whack with a 2lb. The front half of the upper mount has a split
steel sleeve pressed into it, I'm not sure if the lower mount has the same.
Could probably make more clearance if I could make the sleeve move forward a
hair.

[MBZ] E300D/2.5 Turbo Belt Tensioner

2018-05-16 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I looked at the sections of the manual I posted a few days ago:

13-1202hw.pdf
13-3200hw.pdf
13-343.pdf

and everything looked quite confusing.

Searching on the Web, though, I found:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/312419-diy-1987-300d-serpentine-belt-tensioner-replacement.html

with that, it didn't seem so confusing, so I took a closer look at the
belt tensioner on the front of the OM602 in our '90 E300D/2.5 Turbo and
found it was quite loose.

I went down to the local heavy truck repair shop (appropriately called
The Shop) which has done work on my trucks (and whose employees I have
befriended) and asked to borrow a socket-drive 12 mm allen wrench. They
had one and let me bring it home to use it.

I removed the bolt holding the idler pulley using my own 6 mm
socket-drive allen wrench and a 1/2" breaker bar. Yes, it was
appropriately tight so I did need the breaker bar.

I then removed removed the bolt and nut holding the top end of the spring
with a 13 mm socket.

I then put the 12 mm socket-drive Allen wrench on the breaker bar and
proceeded to loosen the bolt holding the tensioning lever to the front
cover. But it took hardly any torque to turn it! It turns out the bolt
was loose!

I have taken it out and found an oily mess, probably because the threaded
hole is open to the inside of the engine.

13-3200hw.pdf says to apply Omnifit 100 M orange sealant to the threads
to seal the threads and lock the bolt in place, but I don't have any of
that.

I'll have to clean up the threads in the front cover the best I can
somehow (anyone have any ideas?) and then use the Permatex Medium
Strength Threadlocker Blue I have.

I did notice that the two "end covers" to keep the dirt out of the allen
recesses of the bolts were missing.

When I replaced the belt tensioner on that engine shortly after I bought
the car, I used brake cleaner to remove the oil, then blue Locktite on the
bolt. Apparently it didn't hold so well - - - probably needed better/more

Re: [MBZ] Here's a good solution to excess disposable income

2018-05-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I did my solo flight in a 40 hp cub, at age 9... to short to reach the wing
tip, just big enough to hand prop the 40 hp. Rule was, always tie the tail.
safety first. Throttle friction set was not always reliable, and solo hand
prop safety required the tail be tied...

The rope trick worked perfectly. I could prop the plane, do engine warm
up... do run up to mag checks, then "pull the rope" and go fly.. Always
carried a ground stake along with the rope, "just in case" I made an off
field landing. 40 hp cub is a great way to build hours... lots of hours..
;))
and learn patience, since they were sloww... but forgiving...

Great memories.

[MBZ] E300td oel and EGR?

2018-05-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I got a filter yesterday and going to change the oel in this dizzel.
I'm guessing cheepcheep Delvac will be fine?  Don't want to go M1 and
pay for that.

I also got the Kumhos mounted on it, have not taken it out yet as it is
running badly now, again, going out to change the fuel filter and see if
that helps.  The tires look pretty good, no telling how they will be but
if they last a while it's all good.

I heard the vac valve or whatever it is on the fender that is connected
to the EGR making some kind of gurgling noise so wonder if the EGR is
not working right now.  I pulled the hose and it hissed so there was
vacuum in the hoses, I guess those are OK.  I think I'll just do the
rewiring bypass on the EGR and be done with it but need to get organized
to do that.

Re: [MBZ] Very odd electrical issue in SDL

2018-05-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
The only theory I have is that the switch did not ground out something and
maybe the amount of output from the alternator varies with rpm. What was really
strange is that if I had it in neutral it did not start the lights blinking off
and on, but would with actual vehicle speed. So maybe that was related to the
speed sensor somehow. I have never seen this issue before

HA, you're not even remotely a cheapskate. I'm a cheapskate, I've been driving
my $1500, '98 Jetta for 4 years now on basically no money, its been the most
economical vehicle I've ever had even surpassing my $400 240D which needed way
more in repairs. I've put ~90,000 miles on it so far (290,000) and other than
the rust I don't see any reason I couldn't put another  100,000-200,000 on it.
Sadly due to rust its probably going to get replaced this year...
