Re: [MBZ] Tire rotation interval

2019-03-24 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
If you rotate, 14k sounds like a loong time.
5-10k sounds more reasonable, that doc you posted combines it with oil changes
because that's when the car is in the shop, not because it's the best time to
do it.
Do the newer FSS go over 14k now? I thought 10k was the max on W210 FSS. My
Saturn tends to run around 11.7k with me driving it.

Re: [MBZ] Tire rotation interval

2019-03-24 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
On a W210 if you do not rotate the tires the rear tires, especially the
right rear, will wear out way before the front. The reason this question
comes up is I am about 3k miles away from a 14k rotation interval on the
01 E320 which had new Milestar 50k mile tires installed then.  I happen
to notice the right rear seems like it has way more wear that it
should.  I need to look at it further.  That just got me to wondering if
14k is too long.  I think I got it from the attached document.

[MBZ] Tire rotation interval

What should the tire rotation interval be on a W210, or any other
chassis for that matter?  I am showing 14k but I wonder if that is too
long?  I went thru a service schedule I found a while back and I am sure
this is how it was listed.  Does that sound right?

Re: [MBZ] I want to loose my lug bolts -- well that is disappointing

2019-03-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Hit the stuck bolts with the air wrench, just let it bang for a good
while, some fwd/rev trying to loosen them.  Finally sheared one off,
then the other.  Sigh.  So I got one most of the way drilled out until
time to quit.  That steel is tough, a center punch got dulled too.  I
used various sized bits to step up, kept the bit and bolt wet with
cutting fluid, after an hour the one is most of the way drilled out but
not quite.  Not real fun.  I guess I'll work on them again this week,
try to get that wheel off. BAH!

It looks like some old 126 wheel bolts I have are the same as what is on
this car, so I have a bunch I can use, don't have to order more.  So
that is a good aspect.

extreme sun/heat damage on the roof. Likely it sat for years outside.
Major body rebuild needed, with full paint strip and repaint.

predecessor, the OM636 could too.  An OM603 or 606 has enough torque to
really twist or break things.

Re: [MBZ] OT the car has a number of outstanding maintenance needs

2019-03-24 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Almost - the 51% rule for experimentals applies to the plane having been
built by amateurs, not necessarily by you. You do have to have done
documented work yourself, and pass an oral/hands-on test given by the
airworthiness inspector to get a "repairman's certificate" which allows you
to perform the inspections on it yourself, limited to that one aircraft.
Anyone can perform maintenance on an experimental and sign it off in the
log book. SO, the Tailwind W10 that I'm building was bought as a 90% done,
with 90% left to finish project. I will be able to test for a repairman's
certificate for it when it's signed off as airworthy by the FAA.

Certificated aircraft have a limited list of maintenance items that the
owner/pilot can perform (tires, sparkplugs, oil changes, and interior
items), all else must be signed off by an A, except inspections, which
require an A with IA (inspection authority). However, the A only has to
supervise the work, and testify that it was done correctly - anyone "under
their supervision" can actually do the work. I've done 95% of the work on
the Cessna, and have it signed off by one of the four A on our strip -
they have seen and watched my work enough to trust me.

I never finished the return online thing, because I didn't agree to
their terms. I went back and did it over and this time checked the box
that you could see the part was installed, and you can see it was. By
doing that their online return thing said someone will call me. So I
hope to hear from them Monday. The trick is to say you started to
install it and that you can tell the install had been attempted.

Either way, it is very frustrating to tear down the vehicle and not be
able to install the new part while the vehicle is leaking fluids all
over the driveway, only to have to put it back as it was; then wait a
week for the right thing to show up. It will all have to be done over
again.

My order clearly says LEFT. Their catalog clearly said LEFT. The
part number is what was ordered. But as of yesterday afternoon, their
catalog clearly says RIGHT by the part number they shipped. SO I guess
someone else already showed them they screwed up.

My guess is all you really need is the overall physical dimensions of the
installation (coil shape/size), voltage/wattage, and that it's for a coffee

This is a low-tech installation, in all likelihood.

60 is a lot nicer than 70 or 75. The sidewall on a 285 tire is still plenty
tall at 50 profile.

The width of the wheel is really the limiting factor for the contact patch.
I was going to have them widen my old 14" bundts to 8.5 or 9. Could run 50
series 285 or whatever. Then put thicker swaybars on and have some real
w123 performance.

Even with 55s, I start with sidewall pressure and work down from there if I
don't like the NVH.
It's not overinflated if it's the pressure the manufacturer specifies for
maximizing speed and load ratings. The Cruze is the quietest and softest riding

I like the 70 tires, and 65s seem to be ok.   Rubber band tars are for
idiots with more money than brain.  I watched some bozo blow 2 ties and
bend 2 rims hitting a curb because he was diddling on his cell
phone.  You would not believe how funny it was.  I saw him drifting
into the curb and then Pow!   Pow!!   You could see the air escaping
from the tires.  It was almost like 2 superman cartoon bubbles with
audible Pow! in place of written Pow!

Buddy of mine put 18s or bigger on his Jetta, within a few months dented all 4

Problem made worse by the fact that he won't monitor his tire pressures.

Tire pressures are critical on these low profile tires. They wear far faster
than regular rubber if not inflated properly - ask me about the set the wife
went through in 18 months - mainly my fault because I didn’t have the pressure
right - I was using the original tire stock pressure and not the pressure used
on the wheels’ application (2003 R230). Duh! A very expensive lesson.

I will say that the R129, when equipped with these tires and wheels, drives
like it’s on rails. A totally different driving experience compared to the
stock wheels and tires.

2019-03-24 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
