Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-11 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I think we are looking through the wrong end of the telescope.
The question that really needs an answer is not "Were things better 30
years ago?" rather.. the question that needs answered is:
"Is life truly better because of all the technology changes, the social
changes, the automotive changes, the work place changes, and the family
life changes that we presently have?"
And:

> "Do we work less and actually produce and earn more [in real value], do
>> our children actually learn how to survive and thrive in life, and are we
>> safer, richer, more fulfilled in life, than our ancestors of 30 years ago
>> [or 50 years ago]?"

2020-04-11 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Lol, I said nearly thirty years ago that desktop publishing (and by extension,
social media now) would be the end of civilization. Any idiot can publish
things now -- back when it cost a couple hundred thousand dollars to get
something in print, the trash got filtered out. If someone wanted to crank out
their screed on a mimeograph, everyone knew it was probably junk.

Now it's hard to tell the difference, and there is NO filter on anything. We
are drowning in garbage.

The good thing is that this has happened before, multiple times, and once
people figure out they are being fed garbage they tend to wise up a little.

After all, we had rampant yellow journalism around the turn of the last
century, and now newspapers are considered reliable sources. It's just gonna
take a while with social media -- we will get there, but not soon.

Me, I'm about done with the noise. Had to upgrade to a "smart" phone because
Verizon is planning to end support for 3G/1x, and my old phone was getting
unreliable (and had trouble with "smart" text). I hate it. Endless "upgrades"
for junk I don't use and will never use, hard to type on (my thumbs are bigger
than the chicklet sized letters on the keypad), stupid touch screen is never
working right, and the damned buttons are almost impossible to use without
accidentally pushing the wrong one.

To say nothing of the ridiculous GLASS front and back and the super fragile
OLED display that fails when you drop the phone (because the connections come
apart in the wiring).

3-4 stations sounds good sometimes.  All the tech is nice and having the
power of the internet is great, but it seems like information overload
at times and I would gladly give all that up to live back in the simpler
times again.  Maybe I should sell off everything and move out to the
woods or something.

It’s really sort of sad. The seller is clearly attached to it if you read the
listing. It’s pretty junky and really has no functional purpose. You couldn’t
even salvage parts off of it, it’s so beat up.

I can see where it would have been cool for a little kid, though.

Phase one is complete. I have removed the donor engine from the 84 300D
with a bad transmission. I am in the process of replacing the the front
seal and checking other components and replacing as needed.
Next phase is removing transmission from 2nd donor car. (83 300D). I’ve
been told by several that the 240D transmission won’t hold up to the
additional torque of the turbo engine.
I will need a new/used exhaust system. Does anyone have any information on
a used stainless system that is for sale. Rick was able to provide one for
my last project (85 300D) that is currently in Texas and being used as a
 daily driver by my daughter.

The Europeans eat geese, and ganders. The introduction of turkey to the dinner
table across the pond is a very new marketing triumph. Way back in the day (I
attended British international schools for a few years) the holiday meal had
roasted geese, hams, or beef as a main dish, along with all manner of root
crops, blood puddings and other not so tasty courses.

Re: [MBZ] Drop forged crankshaft (video)

2020-04-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s what the foundry floor at Kohler (plumbing) looked like in the 1980s.
Even though the guys were supposed to be wearing all sorts of protective gear
they would leaving it laying around. These were all WWII vets who were much
like the guys that were in that video.

A real man didn’t have to wear all that pussy stuff. A real man breathed in all
that foundry sand (and died early from silicosis, too.)

Every employee in the company had to get a lung volume test upon employment.
Anyone who worked in or around the foundry got tested every three months after
that. It was funny as heck. You stood there with this mouthpiece connected to
what looked like a vacuum cleaner hose and a pair of clips to hold your nose
closed. You had to take the biggest breath you cold, then exhale as forcefully
as possible with this mouthpiece in your mouth. Sounds simple, but think about
having to blow as hard as you can with your mouth wide open.

I kept cracking up because the nurse that did my test, an older, somewhat
corpulent gal, was standing there yelling, “BLOW, BLOW, BLOW!”

It made me laugh. It pissed her off.

[MBZ] 300D Engine transfer to 240D

2020-04-11 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Phase one is complete. I have removed the donor engine from the 84 300D with
a bad transmission. I am in the process of replacing the the front seal and
checking other components and replacing as needed.
Next phase is removing transmission from 2nd donor car. (83 300D). I’ve been
told by several that the 240D transmission won’t hold up to the additional
torque of the turbo engine.
I will need a new/used exhaust system. Does anyone have any information on a
used stainless system that is for sale. Rick was able to provide one for my
last project (85 300D) that is currently in Texas and being used as a daily
driver by my daughter.
