"Tesla Fire in Texas Crash Was Not How It Was Reported, Says Fire Chief"
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36189237/tesla-model-s-fire-texas-crash-details-fire-chief/

   - A crash

and
subsequent fire of a Tesla Model S
    this past weekend quickly
caught attention online for its "four-hour" blaze, but that's not exactly
what happened, the fire chief told *Car and Driver* today.
   - The initial fireball was contained in a matter of minutes, and it was
just tiny flareups that were a longer-lasting problem, chief Palmer Buck
   explained to the *Houston Chronicle

*
   and *C/D.*
   - Although the chief acknowledges EV fires require different tactics by
firefighters, Tesla and government safety data asserts that traditional
internal-combustion vehicles experience one fire for every 19 million miles
traveled; for Teslas EVs, it's one fire for 205 million miles traveled.

Re: [MBZ] More PW funs

2021-04-21 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Yeah that’s mostly gone on the 2 E320s. More gone now that I hit them On the
back with the PW

Interestingly the old TD mats that are at least 25yo I would guess, probably
not original but aftermarket, are rubber backed and are fine.

One of the TD rear mats had a gob of what looked like dried chewing gum worked
into the carpet. I tried some Goo Gone to no effect. The googs suggested WD40
so I soaked it good with that and after sitting a coupla hours and scraping it
with a blade for awhile it mostly came out. About the only thing WD40 is good
for.

The TD mats look pretty good.

2021-04-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
From the disclaimers page: "PMC is not a publisher and does not publish
journal articles itself. Once a journal as a whole has been accepted for
inclusion in PMC, NLM does not judge the quality of individual articles and
relies on the scientific publishing process to identify and address problems
through published comments, corrections, and retractions."
So they're publishing it but not condoning the data or actually saying its any
good. This is not a "study from our government"Its not even a study, its a
meta-meta analysis...

I pulled the old floor mats out of the 79 300TD that is dissolving here. They
were pretty filthy from sitting for like 10 years in the car.

I hit them first with the pressure washer to get the surface crap off and
whatever was in the carpet. That actually got them fairly clean but there were
stains and such. I made up a mixture of oxy clean and Dawn dish detergent In a
spray bottle per a recipe I saw in the webbernets for car carpet cleaner.

then rinsed with the PW. They came out surprisingly clean but need to dry now.

The gray 99E320 and beige 95E320 mats I cleaned on Sunday with car wash

Re: [MBZ] suddenly the engine locked at idle without any noises 1990 Mercedes 300D Turbodiesel - $1, 200 (Salisbury NC)

2021-04-21 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I had a Ford 7.3 Diesel hydrolock at idle.. Sudden stop.. It had a head
gasket leak and had been setting for some time. I got it started to "check
what was wrong with it" [looking for frothing in the upper radiator tank]
it ran for about 15 minutes, then started running rough.. then sudden
stop... really sudden stop from about 800 RPM..

Tear down found water in cylinders 3&5 [pulled heads first] ... full tear
down found #3&5 rods bent. Pre teardown, I pulled the glow plugs [all of
them] and cranked the engine while watching for coolant out of the glow
plug holes... #3&5 squirted coolant, so at that point, A tear down was
going to happen.

The buy price went down a lot when I pulled the glow plugs and squirted
water... I bought it. then spent another $4,000 on parts and machine shop
to build the engine. 4 years and 200,000 miles later, it is still going
strong, after everything was made right.

This car suggests to me, it may have done the same thing.

When I did my summer internships at NASA Langley 74 75 76 second summer
I worked in the Real-time Simulation group, we had a whole room full of
CDC computers down the hall, 6600s, 7600s, STARs.  I would wander in
there and just kinda walk around a look at them.  My phone these days
will probably do more than that whole room would do, but still it was
way cool.  We did not have any terminals to do much, I think some of our
programmer types had them to tweak the simulations while we were running
the simulator.  Even at school I think my last year, grad school 77, we
got a coupla terminals to submit and run FORTRAN jobs but they were
kinda clunky though easier than dealing with punch cards.  I think we
still had to walk over to the computing center to get the printouts, we
might have had a printer in my building, I forget.  I got yelled at a
few times by the computer center guys for running aerodynamic
simulations that hogged a lot of resources and took several minutes to
run, it really pissed them off.  So after that I made them more refined
to hog even more resources, it got to where they would only run them
overnight and left nasty notes on my printouts.

That's because you can't buy white polyester short sleeved shirts, skinny
black ties, can't smoke Luckies while working, and black thick-rim spectacle

After you deduct the $5k it costs to locate a competent mechanic that can sort
out the fuel system. Pre-facelift R129s are nightmarish in this regard, not to
mention some of the other issues they had.

That was an interesting watch. I was into the X-15 stuff when I was a kid,
but had no idea there were so many flights. I liked the parts about the
ablative coatings they were using on it, and how they designed the turbines
in the engines to run on the fuel and use it to keep the engine nozzles
cool. That was pretty neat.
