Re: [MBZ] Prevost house

2022-12-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Don,
Thanks on the Champ. It is a true barn find, well hanger find, actually.
It comes with a full set of engine and airframe log books from the day it
left the factory in 1946, which is incredible. In digging through the
current history today I discovered it has been setting in the hanger where
it is since the owner bought it 23 years ago, and not been flown...
previous story was 12 years... paperwork says 23 years... so next comes a
full inspection and return to legal flight status.
A fun airplane to fly, if you are not in a hurry... haha... Life in the
slow lane = driving a 240D to the airport to fly a Champ... then driving
home... that should take up the whole day..

[MBZ] 2007 E350 4 MATIC - 141k miles - $4,800

2022-12-26 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Price is on the high side with the rebuilt title. Driver's seat has a cut on
it. Would also need to check the VIN for bad engine. If engine is good might be
within negotiating range.

up a while from the previous seller.  Hopefully this guy gets hung out

about a guy who raced at Bonneville and set all kinds of records with a

good watch and lots of historic info and commentary from his son (or grandson,
whatever)

Racing on a Ribbon of Salt celebrates the vision, stamina and prowess of heroic endurance
land speed racer "Ab" Jenkins, and his legendary race cars.

I came across this film a couple months ago and have watched it at least half a
dozen times since. The story of Ab Jenkins and the Mormon Meteor was new to me
and incredible to behold. He was the first person to test the Bonneville Salt
Flats on a motorized vehicle just to find out how fast he could go, and he
didn't stop there. His feats of endurance are ledgendary, and the story of the
evolution of speed at Bonneville is epic. A truly must see film for anyone.

Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt
/Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt/ tells the story of David
Abbott “Ab” Jenkins, a building contractor from Salt Lake City, Utah who
decided to try to single-handedly break every existing land speed record on his
beloved Bonneville Salt Flats.

Ab began racing with a 1935 Duesenberg Special that had a streamlined body and
a supercharged 420 cubic inch straight eight that pushed around 400 hp.
Eventually, Ab repurposed a Curtiss Conquerer aircraft engine, a 1,570 cubic
inch V12 that put out 750 hp and built a custom chassis around it. In those
days, Bonneville had a 10-mile circular track, so many of Ab’s records were for
high-speed endurance runs of 12, 24 or even 48 hours. Many of Ab’s records
still stand today, which is incredible since nearly a century has passed since
Ab ran on the salt flats.

Re: [MBZ] ACD

2022-12-26 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

There's a documentary on Amazon

 Boys of Bonneville

about a guy who raced at Bonneville and set all kinds of records with a
Duesenberg, the history of the whole effort was really interesting.
It's a good watch and lots of historic info and commentary from his son
(or grandson, whatever)

Racing on a Ribbon of Salt celebrates the vision, stamina and prowess of
heroic endurance land speed racer "Ab" Jenkins, and his legendary race cars.

I came across this film a couple months ago and have watched it at least
half a dozen times since. The story of Ab Jenkins and the Mormon Meteor
was new to me and incredible to behold. He was the first person to test
the Bonneville Salt Flats on a motorized vehicle just to find out how
fast he could go, and he didn't stop there. His feats of endurance are
ledgendary, and the story of the evolution of speed at Bonneville is
epic. A truly must see film for anyone.

Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt
/Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt/ tells the story of
David Abbott “Ab” Jenkins, a building contractor from Salt Lake City,
Utah who decided to try to single-handedly break every existing land
speed record on his beloved Bonneville Salt Flats.

Ab began racing with a 1935 Duesenberg Special that had a streamlined
body and a supercharged 420 cubic inch straight eight that pushed around
400 hp. Eventually, Ab repurposed a Curtiss Conquerer aircraft engine, a
1,570 cubic inch V12 that put out 750 hp and built a custom chassis
around it. In those days, Bonneville had a 10-mile circular track, so
many of Ab’s records were for high-speed endurance runs of 12, 24 or
even 48 hours. Many of Ab’s records still stand today, which is
incredible since nearly a century has passed since Ab ran on the salt flats.

Detroit Diesel is a very common engine on those older buses. A/k/a the
Screamin' Jimmy. Two stroke diesels. The EPA put them out of business as they
did air-cooled Porches and VWs.

Re: [MBZ] Prevost house

2022-12-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Correct. The older Prevost all used the Detroit 8V92 engine, which means it
was 8 cylinders, V configuration, and 92 cubic inches per cylinder.
The early engines used strictly mechanical injection and timing, and in
their day there were very skilled mechanics who could make them sing a very
happy tune pulling down the road while loaded.
Then came the EPA [and California CARB Rules], Detroit changed the 8V92 to
DDEC [Detroit Diesel Electronic Control] and the 8V92 continued on for
another decade. Finally EPA raised the emission limits to a point of
"unobtainium" for the two stroke design, and Detroit shifted to only
producing 4 stroke, emissions compliant, computer controlled engines [still
calling the computer DDEC to keep control of the Detroit moniker.
The Mercedes 40 ft. Double Deck bus I own has a late generation 8V92 DDEC
engine.. and yes, I own a "big set of wrenches and a big stack of hard copy
manuals" to work on it. 20 Ton jack stands, anyone?

for and then discovered it was so rusty underneath that the engine was about to
fall out. After over 10 thousand dollars of welding in new steel framing and
other repairs it was safe to drive.

As I understand it, DOT inspections are not required for private "RV" titled
coaches. Many have so much deferred maintenance and worn parts that they should
not be considered road-worthy. And they get worked on by people who have no
business touching them, to say nothing of charging money to work on them. Rule
of thumb is to budget an additional 50% of what you paid to correct all the
past maintenance mistakes and replace worn parts.

On my 98 Jetta the starter is the front motor mount, or they share a bolt

The engine ground also shares that bolt. I didn't realize it the time I took it
