Yup. Everyone who said parking brake gets a prize.

The problem must have started a few weeks ago, when I tested the parking
brake and found it didn't hold. It turns out it didn't fully release,
either. I discovered today that the cable to the pedal had a big bow in
it where it had released, but the equalizer bar had stayed put.

Once I figured that out, I crawled underneath and pounded the equalizer
bar with a hammer until it was somewhere close to the released position.
The left rear is still dragging a bit more than I'd like, though, so I
may have to smack it a bit more, or cut the cable.

[MBZ] 107 fan replacement

2005-06-19 Thread Thomas Kase
Chris,

I hope this is the last post I have to make on the ninny topic - wear whatever
you want - in private - just don't run to the lawmakers or run off your mouth
about what others should be doing - the latter two qualifies you as a ninny -
the first is perfectly OK.

Personally, I am a stickler for wearing hearing protectors when I engage in
even marginally loud activities - but I'm not going to demand laws and
regulations...

Can we kill this topic now? Thanks.

Now, how about that LARGE electrical fan replacement for a 107 (450SL)? Any
suggestions? Anyone?

Thomas Kase

Thomas Kase sez:
Could the ninnies who like protective clothing and lack a sense of humor go
read the Consumer Report website or some other wholesome activity?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the number of head
injuries has increased 10 percent since 1991, even though bicycle helmet
use has risen sharply, and in many cases is required by law. But given that
ridership has declined over the same period, the rate of head injuries per
active cyclist has increased 51 percent just as bicycle helmets have
become widespread.

I just think you are much more likely to take a spill when riding trails on
a mountain bike, helmet or no. The time frame is the same as the rise and
maturation of Mountain Bike style biking. I fall down a lot more on trails
than on the road, and if I had full suspension, I would surely ride harder
trails. 'Course, that doesn't really defame helmets, though.

Am I a ninny to wear safety glasses when shooting my pistol? Or a veil when
working bees? I don't think every one that wears protective clothing is a
ninny. However, I don't think I would encourage you to wear any against
your wishes!

than a drop light . It only take a few turns to adjust the brakes,
and since you are loosing it, this will add more slack on the cable
.Try some PowerBuster on the cable .

the guy did have a gear shift knob with #5 on it, like he said..
This

I towed the dolly, just in case It turned out to be for real. The new
trucks has a 5 speed (has #5 on shift knob) , and just about as different
from the MB as could be. (long stroke, direct injection, way different
gearing) Its nice to have functioning cruise control with the controls
on
the steering wheel, lots of really fancy features about this truck, plus
it got 24+ mpg, the sound of that Cummins is nice through the 4 inch
exhaust system ...All in all a nice ride (for a truck)...plus, the turning
radius is much smaller than the old F250. The first thing I did when I
got
home was to hop in my 240d and go for a spin to the PO, now thats a nice
ride and I can visualize all the parts that are going round an round
inside the engine cause I put em there. I think that I could become
almost as familiar with that Cummins as I am with the 616, it will never
be as easy to work on or nearly as simple. (which may be the limiting
factor as to how familiar with it I'll become :-) ) The interior is nice
but MB tex is far superior and rugged. I wont to be able to wipe a grease
smug off the seat, which is gona be pretty heard to do in the
truck. Anyway its a lot nicer then my old Ford and I like that Cummins 6
cylinder engine but it ain't no Mercedes. Of course compairing the two

Lee,

I would definitely try adjusting the ADA, the pressure compensating device
on the rear top of the injection pump. Especially if the car did not smoke
too much at altitude. The turbo injection pumps go leaner as they age, I
don't
see why the NA pumps would not do the same. Adjusting the ALDA/ADA
compensates for wear in the pump, and brings back the IP calibrations towards
the
original settings

Most ADAs don't have a seal on the adjusting screw so it is easy to do.
Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw gently 1 turn CCW. Do not force the
screw! This because your ADA will only have two turns or less available
before
it shears off the screw.

Watch for much improved off idle acceleration. Even at lower elevations. A
0.050 shim under the ADA would be equal to two turns CCW on the screw. I
will give you a shim if you send me a SASE.

Let the list know how you come out.

[MBZ] It Arrived!

So, the 1990 300D 2.5 arrived via shipping from New Orleans for my wife- I'm
sad to say that it has a few problems. I think they can be fixed at a
reasonable cost- can anyone tell me rough numbers?

1.Broken Windshield
2.Rear Muffler
3.Motor Mounts
4.Alignment (steering wheel upside down!)
5.Fuel leak on a small piece under hood, photo at
www.immersionstudio.com/images/fuel.jpg -- what is this piece??

Of course, the motor mounts make the thing sound like a Mack truck-
unbelieveable difference between my 1991which has 71k. It shakes like crazy.

In the end, the sad thing is that my wife will probably not want to keep the
car and I'll need to sell it. She thinks it is just too rough for her.

Should I sell it as is or do the above repairs? I paid 6k plus shipping. My
1991 was 7500, a much better deal as it turns out! It needed nothing.

Looks like the fuel thermostat is leaking. Other than the windshield

either expensive or difficult to rectify. The car looks nice, and the

it a bit longer? Looks like a great deal to me.

RE: [MBZ] Pricing a 240 for sale

2005-06-19 Thread Tom Hargrave
Gary,

Assuming it runs, the value ranges $900.00 - $6000.00, unless Kaleb is
buying it, in which case they are all worth $500.00

Not long ago, Rusty sold an excellent daily driver for somewhere around
$4500.00 and I believe the buyer got a great deal.

The value varies because everything depends on condition. You can easily
throw $2.000.00 under the hood of a Mercedes in one weekend.

So, you need to assess the vehicles condition.

Can anyone shed light on the appropriate price range for a nice 79 240D?
I may be selling mine but I can't for the life of me put a value on it.
None of the appropriate sources really seem to work for 26 year old diesels.
This car has been in our family since new so I am afraid that I might try to
put some emotional value in it. Any ideas?

If you don't want to comment on pricing/valuing on line, email me off line.

Of course, the motor mounts make the thing sound like a Mack truck-

crazy.

In the end, the sad thing is that my wife will probably not want to keep the

Mercedes does NOT approve ANY oil additive - use recommended oil and
there is no need for any oil additive. Most oil additives are NOT

Buncha jerks here in Atlanta; never wave back, blip the lights, or honk the horn in return. No sense of pride. But I
swear, the second you fly past a late model CLK or SL in a 25 year old Benz, it's guarandamnteed that they will shortly
speed up and overtake you. And then they never wave, blip the lights, or honk as they pass.

Re: [MBZ] Normally Aspirated Diesel at High Altitude

2005-06-19 Thread Lee Einer

Thanks, Jim-

I backed the adjusting screw on the altitude adjusting box a full turn
and took it for a test drive. It seems to have picked up a little bit of
accelleration even down here at sea level. It will be a few weeks before
I can check it out in LV. If needed, I can back it out another turn at
that time.

One question, though- when backing off the adjusting screw, how will I
know how much is too much? Should I be watching for smoking under
accelleration?

Is there anything that can be done with a normally aspirated 300CD to
regain some of the performance at higher altitudes (besides adding a
turbo?)

Lee,

I would definitely try adjusting the ADA, the pressure compensating device
on the rear top of the injection pump. Especially if the car did not smoke
too much at altitude. The turbo injection pumps go leaner as they age, I don't
see why the NA pumps would not do the same. Adjusting the ALDA/ADA
compensates for wear in the pump, and brings back the IP calibrations towards the
original settings

Most ADAs don't have a seal on the adjusting screw so it is easy to do.
Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw gently 1 turn CCW. Do not force the
screw! This because your ADA will only have two turns or less available before
it shears off the screw.

Watch for much improved off idle acceleration. Even at lower elevations. A
0.050 shim under the ADA would be equal to two turns CCW on the screw. I
will give you a shim if you send me a SASE.

Let the list know how you come out.

[MBZ] FTP Server

2005-06-19 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
For those of you that don't know, I have started an FTP server which serves
over 30GB of Mercedes related content. CD manuals, technical information,
even Mercedes related multimedia content can be found there. This server is
a collection of items gathered over the years of being on Banned, Club and
Diesel lists. I want everyone to know that this server is open to anyone and
everyone. Perhaps Striplin will put a link in the list serv footer so this
information is easily accessible to everyone.

The user name is Diesel and the password is diesel. The host address is
telshena.dyndns.org. You can visit via web browser by going to
ftp://Diesel:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please make sure of the following: if you are using an FTP client software,
disable passive FTP transfers. If you are using a web browser such as IE,
make sure you have 'folder view enabled for FTP' sites checked and 'use
passive FTP' unchecked in the advanced tab of the internet options.

I know there has been an issue in the past with me not allowing passive FTP
transfers. FYI, this server is behind a NAT firewall and still functions
fully without the use of passive FTP transfers. I understand your pain if
you are a user behind a firewall, however there are other options besides
passive transfers which will still allow you to connect to my server. My
suggestion to those of you in this situation is to enter your firewall
software or router configuration page. Go to the section which deals with
port range forwarding and simply forward ports 20 and 21 to your local IP
address. I would be happy to provide more detailed information on how to do
this, however this information is most easily obtained from the company
website of you firewall software or router.

Thanks and happy downloading.

Regards,

Tarek Elshenawy
