If you are talking about making some sort of extension to be able to
plug one end to the harness in the car and the other end to the seat
brain box with the seat out of the car, that might work. Would have to
find some sort of connector though that will be able to plug into the
car end though.

OK Don wrote:

The extension wire will run from the harness where the seat would have

it as needed, and not invoke the memory function.

The reason to make different extension wires is have the proper plugs.

rumor has it that Robert wrote:

That makes sense to me, but when I asked about this soon after I had
purchased the car several years ago I was told that the dealer who had
sold it (and who was no longer in business here at that time) had used
the system of selling the car titled according to the date of sale rather
than otherwise, regardless of how long it had been in his inventory. This
seems strange to me that he could have legally done this but I was
also told that if the car was indeed a '76, the glow plug switch would
have been incorporated into the key ignition switch as it was in later
years instead of on a seperate pull-switch, as it is in mine. Also I was
told that the oil filter could be accessed from under the hood in '76,
while I still need to be under the car to change the filter in mine. The
date of manufacture is stamped as 9/75, so I guess it could logically go
either way as necessary, and this car must have been built near the time
they made those changes. Anybody have some more comments about this I
 would like to hear them.

Sound to me like the difference between a W115 and and W123. 240D was a
model available on both chassis. And the years overlapped. *grin* Makes
for a whole lot of fun for _us_ to figure out!!

My book says that in 1976 the production of 240D was nearly 16,000 W115

Hi Tom,

Yep, that's a W124 chassis, 124.133 to be exact. The engine is an
OM603.960, six-cyl turbo with aluminum head. T'was only imported to
the USA in 1987. There was a 5-cyl version imported from 1990-1993
(124.128 with 5-cyl OM602 engine), that model has less power but
better fuel economy. A more detailed look at stengths/weaknesses is at

emergency brake not releasing, calipers sticking, low, low tire pressure.
After your
run to work, or back, carefully feel each wheel for excessive heat build up.
Your flexible brake hoses may be due for a change if they look original.
Feel the tires for heat build up too.

[MBZ] Rear suspension link replacement - update

2005-12-27 Thread Aaron Lam
Hello all,

I recently replaced the camber strut, thrust arm, and torque strut
links on my 1987 300D. The old torque strut bushings were OK, but the
thrust arm was pretty shot. The camber struts looked like they still
had some life left - ie, no cracks in the bushings. Prior to replacing
the links, I had some slight (but visible) negative camber in the rear
but tire wear wasn't uneven. With the new links, there is no
noticeable negative camber (and as a result I get slight tire rubbing
on the rear fenders, which I didn't have before, doh!) and the rear
sits about an inch higher than it did before. Of course, I torqued all
the fasteners down only after raising the rear axle such that the
distance from the center of the hub to the top of the fender was the
same as when the car was sitting on the wheels.

My question is this: Do these cars settle down or experience camber
changes after a bit of driving, when the rear links are replaced? I
didn't touch the rear tie rod yet, and as I understand it, this is the
only piece on the rear suspension that affects alignment values.
Thanks for any input,

-Aaron

Re: [MBZ] Germanic inter-species crossover wheel adaptation?

2005-12-27 Thread Lee Levitt
Casey,

5 bolt Audi wheels have the same bolt size and pattern but the
center mounting hole is slightly different (I can't remember
whether it's larger or smaller...). As a result the wheels will
not be hubcentric (ie either they won't fit or they won't be
centered on the hub, which will lead to vibration at speed).

Aftermarket wheels (BBS, OZ and some others) have multiple
hubcentric ring adapters available, so you can adapt their wheels
to either Audi or MB. The rings run roughly $15 to $20 per ring.

The Audi OEM wheels don't have the same flexibility as the correct
opening is cast into the wheel.

If you want to go to 17 wheels, I have a set of OZ Superleggera
wheels available :)

A more detailed look at stengths/weaknesses is at
this link (text file):

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/articles/124.1x3_buying_tips.txt

BTW, I completely agree with Casey's assessment. :) My dad sis each
have one too.

Re: [MBZ] Rear suspension link replacement - update

2005-12-27 Thread Peter Frederick
Aaron:

Jack it back up and release all the bolts -- you tightened them too much before
you lifted the suspension. The sleeves must be completely free before you lift
the axle or you get excess lift. The tires should not ever touch the fenders.

Easy enough to do -- I need to finish my TE, and had to drop it down and
re-align the firsts links I put it.

Just remember that the sleeves in the bushings MUST be free to rotate when you
lift the suspension back up.

It helps to load the trunk with some weight, too, so you don't lift the car off
the jack stands.

wheels in the 16x7.0 and 16x7.5 size with correct offset, at pretty
decent prices if you're patient (say, $400 or less for a set with used
tires). Do you just not like the looks of most of them? I had a set of
202 Sport wheels, and 208 (CLK) wheels, on my white car. Photos here,
in case you missed them:

Has anyone successfully adapted wheels from another (preferably
German) car make into the MB realm? I'm fantasizing about upgrading
my 124 to 16 rims, but I'm not too smitten by the prices or choices
out there. These Audi units seem to be nifty looking and run the same
5x112mm bolt pattern, w/35mm ET as 17 AMG monoblocks:

That's interesting Dave because I have not noticed any settling in my
suspension work. I was able to get my ride height within 1 mm of factory
original according to the dealer's alignment machine that's referenced in
the FSM. Sometimes you may need to bouce the car, etc drive forwards and
backwards a few times to get things to settle before you finally tighten
everything down with the weight of the car on the suspension.

 Hi Aaron,

In my limited experience, any suspension work like this does settle
down after a few days/weeks or few hundred miles. Same with changes
to springs and/or dampers. As the ride height drops, you'll get more
negative camber. I'd leave it alone for a while and monitor the ride
height. When it seems to have settled, or appears that it's NOT going
to settle, then take it in for the final alignment at the dealership.
I assume you'll have the tie rod changed at that time? Also, did you
change the bushing at the bottom of the hub/carrier where the outer
spring link attaches? Any plans for a K-Mac kit?

Oh yeah - any photos? Would love to see that aluminium arm installed!

Subject: [MBZ] Rear suspension link replacement - update

Belt tensioner system and vacuum pump are really the
only two major preventative maintenance items on
602/603 engines. After these two updated you are

The awful random squeaky sound finally went away when
I replaced the belt tensioner system parts (shock,

At first I thought it was a failing vacuum pump
(catastrophic if it evers goes) that got me really
worried. I swapped my old pump on but noises still
remained. So I figured it must be the lower tensioner
lever as the front plastic dust cover was missing.
Sure enough, with all the new parts now the engine

soothing.

Re: [MBZ] Rear suspension link replacement - update

2005-12-27 Thread Aaron Lam
Thanks everyone! Perhaps the cause of my lack of negative camber was
due to the old camber strut being somewhat worn out...? Anyhow, after
driving around for a bit yesterday, I measured the height from the
center of the center cap to the tip of the fender, and it's about 14
- pretty much what it was before swapping out the links. I suppose I
should get the rear fenders rolled soon.

Peter: Yes, with stock wheels/tires/suspension, the rear tire
*shouldn't* touch the fender. I'm right at the limit of clearance - I
have 235/45/17 rear tires on a 17x8.25 ET34 wheel. Previously, I had
*just* enough negative camber to avoid rubbing, even with two
passengers and luggage in the trunk!

Dave: I'll take some pics of the aluminum arm soon. As for alignment,
I'm waiting for my new front LCA's to arrive, so I'll install those
and the new rear tie rod before taking it to the stealer for the final
alignment. The rear bushing at the wheel carrier end of the spring
link needs some funky special tool (which I don't have) and the local
MB indy can do it for about $100 (parts + labor) so I'll probably go
that route.

Re: [MBZ] I aquire massive amounts of inventory

2005-12-27 Thread R A Bennell
That's cool!

How about a right hand side mirror for a 115 - 76 300D?
Let me know if you find such a thing. I am used to being able to check the
right side mirror and am always surprised when it is not there.

Im sure you okieQ people from last year remember going over to Dan's.
Well he is getting out of the business and I have aquired all of his
inventory. MASSIVE amounts of parts. Just hauled the first trunk load
home today.

Re: [MBZ] Germanic inter-species crossover wheel adaptation?

2005-12-27 Thread Zeitgeist
Thanks for the hubcentric tip.

So, if the Audi hub centers are too small, I could theoretically take
them to a machine shop and have them opened up to MB specs--the
Vanagon guys do this all the time and claim it's relatively cheap.

Subjectively, I think VAG equips their vehicles with better looking
rims than DC, plus the pool of available rims in the used market is
considerably larger. Most aftermarket rims look, well...aftermarket.
I'd like the car to look somewhat like it came outfitted as such from
the factory...just disregard the large gaping intercooler hole in the
front bumper. I've priced tires and found 17 to be way above my
comfort threshold for an automotive wear-item, so 16 is the upper
most size limit.

Me, spend $1000 for a set of rims? I may be a diesel nut, but I still
have some shred of dignity left.

Dude,
Let me know how much time and money you get into cobbling up some used
Audi rims with the proper lugs and appropriate centers. Then mount up
some new tires and have them balanced. I have always been the epitome
of frugal, but as I grow wiser and older I see where I have been
wasting time and money trying to save both.

Re: [MBZ] Rear suspension link replacement - update

2005-12-27 Thread Dave M.
Sounds good, Aaron. I thought it would settle down after a little bit.
I'm curious what your final alignment specs turn out to be, with no
camber adjustment. Couple more questions:

1) 17x8.25 wheels? That's a rather unusual size, and sounds
suspiciously like the 500E Evo wheels! What shoes you runnin' on the
car these days? ;-) But yeah, you're on the ragged edge of tire
clearance without rolled fenders, that's for sure. Bet it looks
fantastic, though.

2) Did you go with Sportline front control arms, and are they early or
late style?

:-)

Subject: Re: [MBZ] Rear suspension link replacement - update

MB indy can do it for about $100 (parts + labor) so I'll probably go
 that route.

My driver's seat is looking like it could use some attention. Is there any
conditioner that can be used in cold weather (~30F)? I seem to remember
that

Leatherique needs warmer temps to work.
