Johnny B,

Are you talking about the "on hat rack/inside rear window" third
brake light on the 190??? I think, but I've been wrong before, that
the light from any 201 or 124 would fit...

Seems like the window angle is similar.

I'm looking for the third brake light for a 16V that is incorporated
into the wing.. Euro 16V's did not have that. And therefore,
got 1/3 more downforce from the wing.. Of course, that involves
going quite fast!!!

Take care,
Chuck

Says it's a 1985 350SD, and that it's a European model. It seems
WAY overpriced with a rust spot, dinghed up exterior and rear
bumper
damage.

It does have euro lights, although that doesn't mean much anymore since
they're so easy to swap. I think cloth seats are a better giveaway for Euro
cars than lights or even bumpers---nobody is going to go to all the trouble
to swap interiors. (I know that not all gray-market cars have cloth, but
many [maybe most] I've seen do.)

I bet some moron or prankster just stuck the 350SD badge on the trunk at
some point and it's actually a plain-jane 617, modulo the headlights. A
post-accident swap of a trunklid from a 350SD would be even more likely
except that if the low-res pictures are to be believed the "TURBODIESEL"
badge is there on the right side of the lid, which would read just "TURBO"
on the 350.

[MBZ] '78 450SLC ignition question

2006-05-21 Thread OK Don

It runs!!! It started right up!

I'm still adjusting fluid levels - coolant, tranny, etc. I need to put
the hood back on. I can't find the rubber mounts for the air cleaner -
will have to get another set.

Here's the question - there's a green wire beside the coil - what does
it go to? The coil? If so, which terminal (it can reach either one)?

For those who don't remember my trials with the SLC, two and a half
years ago it got hard to start one week, then the next week would not
start at all. It tried to run a cylinder or two, but not enough to
run. I ran diagnostics on the fuel system, ignition system, checked
cam timing, compression, etc. Everything looked good.
I had noticed over the previous two years that it would 'use' coolant
and oil if I made several WOT runs. I also found in tearing down the
intake system that all of the bolts on the right bank were finger
loose. Interestingly, I also found that the head bolts on that side
are so tight that I stripped the heads on some, and broke the U wrench
for those under the cam trying to loosen them. I've only been able to
remove three of the head bolts on that side.
I bought a used engine, replaced all the rubber seals, copper seals,
gaskets, timing chain and rails, had the head and valves
checked/ground, new valve seals, etc. There a lot of rubber seals in
the intake manifold and injection systems that were hard and brittle.
They have all been replaced. I took the best parts from the two
engines, new water pump, etc., and SLOWLY re-assembled everything.
Cleaning and painting all the brackets, visible parts, etc. also took
a lot of the time.

Today was the first time I tried to start it, and it started almost
immediately. I also found that my timing light no longer works, so I
need to get another one to set the timing a bit more accurately than
the "ear" method.

More updates as they occur ---

Re: [MBZ] 190E questions

2006-05-21 Thread Desert Rat

Kevin,while the 2.6 is a 6 cylinder gas, the 2.3 is a 4 cylinder gas engine.
The 2.6 is shoehorned in and is hard to work on and not much faster than the
4 cylinder model.

The early 190D is economical but not much faster than a W123 240D.

If I can be of any help out here in the Palm Springs area, let me know.

Very little dust and it doesn't stick to the wheels. They are also fairly

It's on the rear of the IP, brown with blue stripe vac line.

Yes, use the MitiVac -- must hold vac indefinitely when applied, and it
should shut the car off in a pump or two. Watch for slow leakdown --
they get pinholes and you will shortly go from slow to no shutoff.

Check the line for oil -- if there is any, you will have to flush the
line and column switch, else the rubber rots badly and you will be
doing another repair.

Those plastic lines are brittle by now, so be careful -- I've had to
splice quite a few, in particular the supply line for the shutoff
(brown plastic). That one in particular is long and subject to
vibration (assuming similar routing on a 602 -- up around under the
tranny vac control blue thing and around).

Check all the rubber connectors on the hard plastic lines, they are
likely either soft and porous or hard and shrunk, and hence leaking by
now. Cures all sorts of ills, such as ACC problems, slow shutoff, hard
shifts, etc.

Broken ball pin in #1 will do strange things for running, pull the

If the floor pan vibrates most strongly at the center bearing mount
(rear of driver's seat), it's the joint. Sounds a lot like a bad
muffler.

It can only be replaced by someone with the proper tooling ($600 or
so, but you get a nice greaseable joint). Best bet is a replacement
shaft, any breaker yard can sell you one, usually in the $100 range.
(German Potomac, European Connection in Falmouth, KY, etc).

A new tranny mount is cheap, and if your's is oily, probably too soft
anyway.

2006-05-21 Thread Bob Rentfro
I think "keeping cars driveable" and "keeping cars in storage" are two
different things. The only way to keep a car driveable, I believe, is to
drive it.
My neighbor growing up had eight cars. He had one of those eight "in
storage" ( he drove it to a Cord/Auborn show in Indiana once a year...I
don't know what he did to make it "be is storage" however). The other seven
he drove. You could tell what day it was by which car he was driving.

Because garages kill cars.

What are the tricks to keeping cars drivable that will be stored for long
periods? If you look at many of our signature lines, most of us have more
cars than drivers, and that is just listing the MB's. Since my brother
passed away and I inherited his vehicles. I now own eight cars and three
motorcycles. Many are projects, but I still have several daily drivers. So
how 'bout it? How does one properly store an automobile?

I store them on the roll. I try to run them all and drive them at
least once a month. Parts cars with engines get started periodically

$3.75 ea dismount, $3.75 ea to mount, $7.50 ea for balancing and
$4.00 ea for disposal ($81.32 for all 4).
I could have just done the work myself for free at Sunoco but I

New tires almost always feel great, when compared to the worn-out
tires that come off. I'll report my driving impression after 10,000mi

Re: [MBZ] Tire Purchase DIY

2006-05-21 Thread Mitch Haley

I'm happy with the tires I got for my Taurus at WalMart last Christmas.
The cheapest tires in the store, they stick as well or better
than the Continentals I had, and go through 1" of water at
50mph with no trouble. Tire guy put the wheels on with quick
burps of a air gun, backed up by what was probably the weakest
torque stick in his kit. He then put the car on the ground,
and hit each nut twice with the torque wrench. Then he handed
the wrench to the service porter, and drove around the building.
When he got back, she went around the car with the torque wrench.

Two months later, I broke a spring and it poked a hole in
a sidewall. The replacement was free, but they charged me
89 cents to dispose of the ruined tire.

I'm quite satisfied with Walmart tire service. OTOH, I
recently overheard a conversation in which it sounded like
they were insisting on overfilling a guy's Colorado in
an oil change. He was telling them what factory spec
was, they were saying it took at least a qt more to
hit the "full" mark. I should have told him to let them
overfill it, then check again after it sat overnight
and make them fix it if it read high in the morning.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Tire Purchase DIY

2006-05-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I bought a set of kumhos from tire rack to install on my 85 300D, have
not done it yet. Everyone here says they are great.

Tony Wirtel wrote:

---

I've liked Kumho tires for some time. Went to Sears to replace a set on
my wifes Passat and guess what- the tire that is dressed to look/sound like
their current 60k mile tire is actually only the new tread pattern onto an
old carcass, is good for only 40k miles and (drum roll please) is made
especially for Sears in China. Same price- no thanks. Didn't see the
Sears name on it though.

Now, all of my Kumhos (20 so far) as well as the 2 just bought from Tire
Rack instead of Sears have been made in Korea. Makes a difference to me.

If only I could mount the things myself. Local shop "forgot" that I wanted
to torque the rims myself; caught after the first tire was done. Somehow an
80# torque stick managed to apply at least 140# of torque. Neither the tech

[MBZ] more on the 2.5 turbo

2006-05-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I looked more close at the oil yesterday and it really seems MUCH
thinner than it should be and it seems to have a diesel smell, but hard
to tell. I started it up again stone cold and it fires right up, and
runs MUCH smoother than when warmed up. Idles ok with just a little bit
of a miss. The oil pressure only goes up to about 2.5 though when stone
cold, probably because the oil appears to be diluted with diesel. I
will probably change it and see what happens.

Thermodynamically, this would be worse than a zero sum, as their would
inevitably be somewhat more electricity consumed in the electrolysis
than would be produced by recombining the H2 and the O2. No process is
100% efficient.

You need to characterize the vibration for us. Circumstances,
frequency, etc. Once you've felt/heard them all, it's fairly
easy to tell wheel and axle problems from driveline problems,
largely because the frequency is some 3x for the driveline
due to the differential's gear ratio. Also, does swerving
or turning affect it?

I can't get the video to play, so I don't know exactly what's being
pitched, but I can tell you that anything that claims to produce energy
by burning water somehow is a scam. Think of water as pre-burned
hydrogen. It has no energy value. Yes, you can electrolyse it into
oxygen and hydrogen, which you can burn, but since the start and end
products are both water there can be no net energy gain.

Mid design would just be the C111 and the GT40, and front engine would

Somehow a=
n
80# torque stick managed to apply at least 140# of torque. Neither the tec=
h
or writer appeared to know what a torque wrench was.

I could have died a happy man and never seen a picture of that car.
That is what happens when cousins marry.
