Thanks Russ,
Yep, I'm working on the W123 240D - I can easily see the front drains - and
blow them out with air. The rear ones are my problem. I looked for the
rear exits but without success - will have to look in the wheelwells as you
suggest.

I'll try the "feel" method as you suggest - I'm pretty sure I have some
aquarium tubing around here. That and my air gun will hopefully work. I
assume the drain hole opening starts at the top of the C Pillar?

This time of year as the pollen and various reproduction system fall from
the trees they seem to target my little cars! And the birds dont help
matters. We have lots of trees for the shade in the summer time - but it's
a double edged sword.

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] W123 Sunroof drains

2007-05-08 Thread Russ Williams

Larry,

If they are similar to the 123 & 126 bodies there is 4 of them.
2 in front located at each corner, Drain lines go down the A-pillar.
2 in the rear again at each corner. Drain lines run down the C-pillar
and exits in the rear wheel wells.

What I use to clean the drain lines out was a 4' length of 1/4" Aquarium
air line tubing attached to

to my air nozzle.
The Front one's you can see if you stand on the door frame. The rears
You may be able to see with a flashlight.

I just did it by feel. The S/R pan goes back pretty far.

Hopes this helps.

Not sure if you can see the drain holes - you'd have to stand on the door
frame and peer horizontally to the back while shining a light into the dark
area. But trust me - there IS a hole in each side recess between the roof
and the sliding panel. I forget where the water exits but it is probably
somewhere near the rear axle.

[MBZ] '85 300SD engine mounts and shocks

2007-05-08 Thread Christopher McCann
How many mounts and shocks are there on the OM617 engine in this car?

AND, how long should they last, approximately?

Mounts are two years old and one of the shocks (at least) is about the same age
and I am getting some shaking...NOT rack damper bolt type loping.

Thanks!

Chris

The sunroof on the SD is making a groaning sound when
I hit the button to open. Will have to manually open
through the trunk and do some maintenance.

Does anybody on the list have a good write up on
cleaning and lubricating the rails and anything else
that might need atttention after 26 years?

According to this[1], it would be an OM616. Might make a good

Especially since you can put the front seats back to touch the back seats...
I can adjust my car so I can't get the clutch all the way in. Plenty of legroom
in a 190D.

My problem sometimes is there isn't enough footroom. My feet can get a bit
clasutrophobic, or even stuck...

Some of them have a hand lever added to the left brake pedal, so you
could try to brake and clutch at the same time. On ours, the hand
brake took so much effort to get any braking, that you couldn't keep
on the right brake the clutch and the left brake at the same time and
have any effective stopping power. (at least when you are a 98 lb
kid) I might be able to do better now! On the 2 cyl JDs, you could
stand on the brakes, and it would stop. On the IH Hs we had, same
thing, they'd stop, and they'd literally spin in a dime. FOrd would
never spin on a dime. The square dancing tractors use IH model Cs,
cause they are smaller, lighter and easier to load and unload, and
still spin on a dime, enabling the tractors to square dance.

We had an 8n, a 9 n then a Golden jubilee, then a ford 901 The frame
size of the 8n and 9 n is handy, but they have drawbacks, especially
in hilly land where you need brakes. After the 901, Dad bought his
second shiny new JD, a 1530 we still have and use. That it an 8n to
the 3rd power, without being much bigger. it is now 33 years
old. After we sold the 2440 last year, the 1530 is still the new
tractor on the place.

That would be very interesting. Back in the 70s, I spent
considerable time thinking about building a diesel engine for my BMW
R75/5, while trying to keep the appearance as close to stock as
possible. The big hang up was the injection pump. I wouldn't use
any pump available then, because they were all too big and heavy for
only 2 cylinders. I didn't think any of the tools I had access to
then could hold the tolerances required to build a pump of at least
the quality of a bosch pump..

I think a /6 (5 speed) diesel would be about the perfect
motorcycle. The stock engines are pretty torquey. I can only
imagine how torquey a diesel BMW would be.

Our Farmall 200, tricycle gear, spins on either wheel nicely.

sort of car from the year of my birth, so since I'm into MB diesels, it
should be a 1972 220D. It could either be a 1972 or 1973 model as long as

[MBZ] W123 Sunroof drains

2007-05-08 Thread LarryT
Evidently, my SR drains are clogged. If only I could locate access to it so
I can blow it out. Yesterday I found my retractabe seatbelt - drivers
seat - was damp. I assume the water is entering the SR area, and filling
the B Pillar with water. Does that sound resonanble? Does the bottom of
the B Pillar drain to the rocker panels?

Should I drill a hole in the bottom of the B pillar to allow water to drain?
I could plug it afterwards -

Ideas?

2007-05-08 Thread Loren Faeth

There is no left/right headlight business on the combination
switch. The fork happens at the fuse box. No relays. Check that
fuse box connection again.

All of the 190Ds I've ever driven (3) were 2.2l 5spd.

I think the only 2.5 manuals found in the US are frankenbenzes.
Like ours, a mix of 2.2 (84) and 2.5 (86). As I said before, we

First I would hit the right side of the center console, on the carpet just
right of the heater and radio. This is where the vacuum unit is, they are
know for having bad solder joints thus hitting there you will often hear a
click and then things start working in which case it will need resoldered.

Additionally things are of course to check that the fuse is good, and you
have good vacumm supply. Either one will cause vents to fail to defrost.

I have had to replace the vacuum actuators and resolder the vacuum switch
module on all my W126 over the years. Note if you remove the dash to
replace

vacuum actuators consider replacing the AC expansion valve as that on the
SELs they are pain to replace with dash in place.
