Re: [MBZ] OT: would you buy a rental car?

2007-10-19 Thread George Larribeau
The Idea of buying a rental car is hard to fathom. I guess mentally it is a
bit like the idea of marrying an ex-prostitute (sorry about the sexism).

There was an article in the National Lampoon Magazine in the mid 1970's
titled How to drive fast on drugs while getting your @#$%^%$# squeezed with
out spilling your drink. It was a very typical product of the National
Lampoon at the time. One of the references in it was a discussion on whether
rear or front engine cars handled best. The answer was that rented cars
handled best rental cars will go around corners faster that any other car.
They also will go into reverse at higher rates of speed .oh yeah some thing
about stellar off road capability. When ever I here of the idea of
purchasing a used rental car I always remember that article.

These days when I rent a car I treat it well however, 20 + years ago I was
a field engineer in the computer industry. Traveled a lot and rented a lot
of cars. All I can say about that is I would want to discuss the statue of
limitation with a lawyer before divulging how they were driven.

Re: [MBZ] I know Glenn, he used to buy from us.

2007-10-19 Thread archer
Rusty is doing a good job now, and his prices are the lowest I've found on
the web. For example, I recently bought a rebuilt A/C compressor/clutch for
an '83 240D from him for a price of $256.00.
Just now looked up the price of that compressor on:
http://autopartsguru.com/ and got the following prices:

MBZ060047
BEHR A/C Compressor
OM616.912 - 10 from 086379- 12 from 027799Delco R-4w/ Pressed-on Clutchw/

Metric Threads Available0.00
$1299.99

Ouch!

A number of years ago Rusty was having problems with his shipping
department, so I started buying from Randy Steele. It naturally took a lot
longer and cost more to ship parts from California to Florida, but it wasn't
too bad for someone who didn't buy a lot of parts.
Finally Randy got some sort of kidney disease and closed down for a while
IIRC, and then had some kind of arrangement where he was operating out of a
dealers parts department. That's about when I started ordering from Rusty
again.

One problem with Randys operation was that after he got computerized, he
didn't want to talk to you on the phone; he wanted you to order from his
website or by fax.

IMHO Rusty has a pretty good operation running now. The parts often get
here sooner than expected and his billing system is much better. There are
only two ways I can think of that Rusty could improve his system;

Confirmation of returned cores.

An adjustment of the freight/handling he charges for small parts.

My CPA wants some kind of credit form from a seller when I get a refund on a
paid statement. Without it, the credit must be verified on the credit card
bill, and by the time it arrives, I might forget to look for it.
(I'm still waiting for some kind of notification that the alternator core I
shipped to Rusty a while back was received and credited to my credit card.)
(-:]

Not long ago I ordered a few Red Head trim fasteners which Rusty put in an
envelope and mailed. The ten dollar shipping/handling fee was more than the
cost of the parts. If the parts had to be boxed and shipped via UPS the ten
dollar fee might be understandable, but $10.00 S/H for sticking a few
fasteners in an envelope and mailing them seem sorta high.

Other than those two little glitches, I've been very satisfied with Rusty.

mounts. That was after I took a filter bracket back within a year of
purchase, after it failed. They gave me a new one, free, but added
 the above caveat.

Funny you mention motor mounts because before I looked that was my
first guess at the problem. Can a bad motor mount be diagnosed
visually?

Allan,

Yes, but it helps to have a new mount to compare it with what you see. I
expect to see about 1/2 of rubber above the metal frame work of the mount.
If
the mount has sagged, all of the rubber will be down inside the perimeter
of the mount.I can't speak to all makes and models just what I own. On my
ML, you can barely see the mounts from anywhere! Figure 6-8 years on a set
of mounts, then they are either hard or collapsed or both.

One other thing, aftermarket mounts are cheap (I just saw two for $27 on
Ebay), but many will not last two years, hotter climates being tougher on
rubber
components, on average. Don't cheap out here!

I tried to look up my '83 Quantum TD -- but alas, it was too old to get
data. Last time I measured it was high 40s but maybe the odometer is off.

Also, I suspect the Buick Regal 3.1 is actually in the low to mid 30s, since
I seem to be able to drive forever before needing to stop for fuel (and it
doesn't have an overly large fuel tank). I can fuel up, drive four hours
round trip and come back still on half tank (going to and from the
daughter's college).

I see, they arbitrarily lowered the ratings on the old cars because
the 2008 test protocol gives lower ratings. IMO this makes the old

Re: [MBZ] reliability

IMO there is little doubt that Mercedes has had quality problems in recent
years if various rating systems such as Consumer Reports can be believed. I
remember years ago when MB was top rated. MB hasn't had a car top rated for
reliability in a number of years AFAIK.
Gerry Archer
'83 300D and 240D

No argument at all. Even dismissing 140s as an aberration, there have been
plenty of problems in the 210s and certainly the 203 (I am an expert, here)
but
about 2005 MB got their act semi-together and most of the problems tailed
off.
The '05 and later 203s and the facelifted 211s are vastly more reliable than
their predecessors.
As for cars like your 123s, their initial quality (which is what JD Power
and
Consumer reports surveys talk about) was not so hot and I speak from
personal experience. My '78 300D, bought new, was in the shop a lot with
various
warranty repairs. Failures were the AC condenser, the radiator, the water
and
power steering pumps and of course the vacuum servo water valve. And
thirteen
injectors.
I question whether you can compare survey results from long ago to how they
are done today. How were things measured? Who asked and who answered? I
don't
recall ever being asked about my '78, '85 or '89.
The main complaint areas today seem to mention electrical faults when in
fact it's electronic faults and the owners don't seem to know the
difference.

---
Consumers Reports send questionaires out to their thousands of members
yearly asking which problems they've had with their cars (up to five years
old). They tabulate the results and publish them. AFAIK that's the way
they've always done it. In general, since 1956 when I started subscribing,
they've been fairly accurate IMO.
J.D.Powers may be better now, but years ago it was widely assumed that they
were not independent of the Detroit automakers influence.

In April of this year CU came out with their annual auto report. CR wrote:
The following vehicles showed multiple used car verdicts that were much
worse than average, according to our survey respondents. They consistently
had more problems than other models overall.
The list included: MB M-Class V8, CLK, S-Class V8, and SL

Another list titled Vehicles to Avoid because of their unreliability
included: MB C-Class 4 cyl '02, C-Class V-6 '01-03 and '06, CLK '01-06,
CLS '06, E-Class '00-06, M-Class V-6 '00-03 '06, M-Class V-8 '99-00
'02 '06, R-Class '06, S-Class V-8 '01-04, SL '03-05, SLK V-6 '05

My daughters GL350cdi which was bought about two or three months ago has
been in the shop twice for a total of about 8 days. The Tampa dealer
refused to provide her a loaner car but the Gainesville dealer did. Of
course, this involved two 140 mile round trips. We're keeping our fingers
crossed.

Perhaps it is my imagination, but it seems to me that those of us driving a
Benz seem to get smacked at a much higher rate than the general
population. This must be the 10th Benz accident this year out of a sample
size of what, fifty individuals?

But on the other hand, I wonder what goes thru the mind of the mental midget
who realizes he is just about to smack into a classic Benz (with the
accident his/her fault)?

I am sure that a Benz driver is no more likely (and perhaps less likely) to
be involved in an accident than someone driving an American car. It is just
statistically interesting to me.

the web. For example, I recently bought a rebuilt A/C compressor/clutch

an '83 240D from him for a price of $256.00.
Just now looked up the price of that compressor on:
http://autopartsguru.com/ and got the following prices:

 Metric Threads Available0.00
 $1299.99

 Ouch!

A number of years ago Rusty was having problems with his shipping
department, so I started buying from Randy Steele. It naturally took a
 lot
longer and cost more to ship parts from California to Florida, but it
 wasn't
too bad for someone who didn't buy a lot of parts.
Finally Randy got some sort of kidney disease and closed down for a while
IIRC, and then had some kind of arrangement where he was operating out of
 a
dealers parts department.

There
 are
 only two ways I can think of that Rusty could improve his system;

 Confirmation of returned cores.

An adjustment of the freight/handling he charges for small parts.

My CPA wants some kind of credit form from a seller when I get a refund on
 a
paid statement. Without it, the credit must be verified on the credit
 card
bill, and by the time it arrives, I might forget to look for it.
(I'm still waiting for some kind of notification that the alternator core
 I
shipped to Rusty a while back was received and credited to my credit
 card.)
 (-:]

Not long ago I ordered a few Red Head trim fasteners which Rusty put in
 an
envelope and mailed. The ten dollar shipping/handling fee was more than
 the
cost of the parts. If the parts had to be boxed and shipped via UPS the
 ten
dollar fee might be understandable, but $10.00 S/H for sticking a few
fasteners in an envelope and mailing them seem sorta high.

Other than those two little glitches, I've been very satisfied with Rusty.

8 inches from the middle doorpost, give or take a bit. Caved in the
front door about a foot, and bashed in the whole front end from there
forward about the same amount. Spun me 90 degrees. I got bruised ribs
and some glass in my arm -- was back to work for half a day Friday,
accident was on Tuesday. Pics were posted to the board, I think the
thread was titled smashed 300D or something like that.

I was lucky in that the car spun, so I have no thrash injuries at
all, didn't hit the doorpost. The right headlight is loose, so you can
imagine what's bent up there --everything. Fender is pushed in past
the normal hood line, hood is bent, front doorpost is bent down enough
to kink the roof, and pushed in much further underneath. Radio and
climate control are crushed, so is the center vent in the dash.

No fun.

Re: [MBZ] Euro plates

2007-10-19 Thread RELNGSON
Volvo does a lot of factory deliveries and owners leave the Swedish delivery
plates (red tag left end, I think) as long as possible. Some used to mount
their state plates over the tourist oval plates (no longer used) which seemed
a
bit pretentious to me. The oval plates were referred to as Z plates since
their number started with Z and I still have the tourist plates for my
Porsche around someplace. Keepsakes.

German factory delivery plates look a lot like normal Germany plates, now.

2007-10-19 Thread Tom Hargrave
I agree, I own an on-line business myself and I am sure that a small
percentage of my customers will never buy from me again. My number one
issue is supply side distribution. If I could get everything in here
on-time I would be a very happy man. I've had to delay shipping $300.00
kegerator kits because $0.39 fittings did not ship to me as promised.

The other issue is customer expectation. Don't shop at Wal-Mart and
expect Macey's level service.

I'm sure that Glenn's issue is 100% justified. I'm just as sure that
reguardless of his issue, Rusty tried to make it right.

Great little work vehicle when needed. All wheel drive previa no

The BioD helps thicken the blood and does seem to clean the injectors

[MBZ] Driveline question W108: u-joint or support bearing?

2007-10-19 Thread David Bruckmann
Gang,

Need some advice about driveline on a W108 (280SEL 4.5). Under moderate load
(cruising), there's a seat-of-the-pants thrumming feel/noise. The vibration
goes away under heavy load, and is speed-related, but the sound does not.

I was under the car the other night looking at the driveline. It is a two-piece
driveshaft (thankfully not 3) with a centre support bearing. Flex disc LOOKS
fine, but I'm sure there's some other way of assessing that.

I noticed that the shaft could be moved axially at the centre bearing. It
wasn't loose, but it didn't require much force to move it. My understanding
from the EPC is that the centre bearing lives in a rubber mount. I'm wondering
if that looseness is a problem. Does it make sense that a weak support bushing
could permit such vibration? Shouldn't the driveshaft be balanced well enough
that there is essentially no lateral force there?

Visual and tactile inspection of the u-joints themselves did not reveal any
looseness nor evidence of grease leakage. I wasn't able to put tons of
rotational load on the shaft with my hands, but neither forceful not subtle
rotation of the shaft revealed any looseness. Among other things, I put a
finger in the joint intersections and rotated the shaft forcefully. No sign of
movement. I don't know whether a worn u-joint would be easily felt this way or
not. The car has less than 100k miles on it, which seems early for a u-joint
failure.

Is it just wishful thinking, or could the problem simply be a shot centre
bearing and support bushing? Can u-joints be assessed in place, or does one
need them out of the car to check for wear?

D.

Glenn, it has been so long that I really don't remember what we did to piss
you off, but obviously we did. We have thousands of satisfied customers and
a handful of those that aren't. We have been in business for 22 years and I
personally believe it is hard to stay in business that long pissing all your
customers off. I am very sorry that we did something to lose your business
and I would love to have the opportunity to win it back, but I understand if
Randy is taking good care of your parts needs. I wish you and him the best.
If there is ever an item that you can't seem to find, I would be more than
happy to try to help you.

Subject: [MBZ] MY 1985 300SD got hit ...

Well

My 300SD got hit, the vas majority of the damage is contained to the
left passenger door. I've shopped around at body shops.
Of course they have different answers on how to repair it.
One of the shops on the insurance company's list is in my neighbor hood
(family owned, independent) and is well known to my neighbor (he buys
and sell cars) and knows the owner of the shop.
He considers the shop to do excellent work and to be well above board
(as far as what ever relationship they would have over there contract
with the insurance company)
I am considering this shop seriously at this time.
They are recommending finding a salvage door.
Out side of inspecting the door before it is 'messed with' (to be sure
it is cancer free), any suggestions?

Re: [MBZ] loose air cleaner, W123 300D/ my $0.02/ check your mounts

2007-10-19 Thread Tom Hargrave
There are 2 failures, one where they compress and one where they tear.

If they are compressed, you can tell visually but you need to know what a
good installed one looks like.

You can check for a torn mount by putting pressure under the oil pan with a
jack. Just make sure that you spread the load with a piece of wood. As you
jack up the engine, the torn mount will become very obvious.

If you replace the motor mounts then don't forget the transmission mount.
It's the third mount for the engine / transmission assembly.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

By the way, a very sharp mechanic, at Tri-stars Petes old place,

 the above caveat.

Funny you mention motor mounts because before I looked that was my
first guess at the problem. Can a bad motor mount be diagnosed
visually?

Re: [MBZ] OT: non US license plate

2007-10-19 Thread Zoltan Finks
I must admit that on my dearly departed Saab 900, I got one of those
Euro plates and put it on the front. Here was my thinking (for those
who are bored):

The bolts that hold on the regular license plate were rusted in place
or broken off when I bought the car (had no front plate when I bought
it). After getting a ticket for no front plate, I finally took action.

On those cars, there is an indentation in the rubber bumper that is
the size of a Euro plate. I was going to get a piece of sheet metal
about that size and bolt it in place and then bolt the regular license
plate to that. It would be a solution and would look vaguely like a
Euro plate to the quick glance.

Then I discovered I could get a used Euro plate online - two of them
actually and with mounting rings for about $20. The plates were
supposedly from a car in Berlin. They had dirt on them and the
stickers were sloppily destroyed.

So I put it on the front of the car and couldn't bring myself to bolt
the regular plate onto it. I attached the regular plate off to the
passenger side with bailing wire.

Anyway, I hate to admit that I liked the look of the Euro plate on
that car, and would actually like to put on on my 123. (Especially
since the front plate mounting is so unattractive on these - just sort
of tacked on there and usually sort of bent up).

I know - the whole Euro plate thing is a juvenile trick often employed
by the ricer set, and sometimes by those with VWs and Audis that they
fancy to be pretty hot. Oh, and no offense to a certain distinguished
gentleman that has one that reads something like 2.316V. :)

Oh also, here in town, I have seen a couple of newer luxury autos with
Euro plates and the regular plates attached on top of them. Cars like
new Volvos with distinguished men driving. So in those cases I got the
impression they might spend part of the year in Europe or something?

I was in town out here in the boonies and saw a Volvo XC90 with

anything that I could identify the country of origin. It was a
tad shorter than a US plate, but much wider. I think it would
fit nicely between the taillights of my W123.

So I figured _the_ list could help my curiosity.

The format is AD:FXnnn with each n=a numeral.

 Is this conclusive for identification?

Or is European all I get? *smile*

Re: [MBZ] Reliability/1994

2007-10-19 Thread archer
Yes. That was the new model year that a Mercedes exec was bragging
 about
 reducing production costs by 35%.

 Meaning just what?

Meaning that they focused on costs rather than quality, resulting in
reliability issues. I guess they put pressure on the component suppliers
 to lower
 prices.

That was a trick question and you fell for it, quoting the party line
 without
 any real knowledge.

I owned two 201s and both had endless shop visits while in warranty and
 the
2.6's engine got new pistons at 70K miles paid for by MB. When I bought my
 '95
C280, the number of problems plummeted and it was clear that the car's
components were better built than the previous model. That's my personal
 experience
with the cars. This was before the wiring harness problems showed up, of
course. As far as W202s costing 35% less to build, this is the first time
 I've heard
 that one.

What I do know is this. Right about that time, Porsche was in dire straits
because their cars had become so costly that sales were in the dumper. And
 so
they hired a Japanese consulting firm to help them survive. The factory
 and
supply lines were revamped with just-in-time parts instead of stacks of
 stuff all
over the place. The old-timers either went with the program or retired. No
choice. And from that reorganization, Porsche's unit cost dropped 30% and
 the
company pulled out of it. Not only that, soon after they produced their
 very
first no-defects car in their history. The rework department's workload
 almost
disappeared. And now, their profit per unit is the highest in the
 industry,
 worldwide.

The actual cost vs. quality screwup was in the W203 and W211 models and my
experience with my '01 C320 bears that out. I expect my two day old W204
 to
establish a new benchmark in MB reliablity, based on pre-production
 testing.
The purpose of this tale is that I have suspected that Mercedes also took
 a
little advice from somebody about that very same time. Just speculation,
 you
 understand.
 RLE

Sometime during the (1970s-80s?) I remember various stories pointing out
that Mercedes was going to ship only their more expensive models to the
U.S., and that the final decisions about the kind of cars Mercedes would
build had been taken away from the engineering department and given to the
sales department.

It would be interesting to see a timeline on the changes in these decisions,
if any, since then.

IMO there is little doubt that Mercedes has had quality problems in recent
years if various rating systems such as Consumer Reports can be believed. I
remember years ago when MB was top rated. MB hasn't had a car top rated for
reliability in a number of years AFAIK.

[MBZ] MY 1985 300SD got hit ...

2007-10-19 Thread George Larribeau
Well

My 300SD got hit, the vas majority of the damage is contained to the left
passenger door. I've shopped around at body shops.
Of course they have different answers on how to repair it.
One of the shops on the insurance company's list is in my neighbor hood (family
owned, independent) and is well known to my neighbor (he buys and sell cars)
and knows the owner of the shop.
He considers the shop to do excellent work and to be well above board (as far
as what ever relationship they would have over there contract with the
insurance company)
I am considering this shop seriously at this time.
They are recommending finding a salvage door.
Out side of inspecting the door before it is 'messed with' (to be sure it is
cancer free), any suggestions?

Glenn, it has been so long that I really don't remember what we did to
 piss
you off, but obviously we did. We have thousands of satisfied customers
 and
a handful of those that aren't. We have been in business for 22 years and
 I
personally believe it is hard to stay in business that long pissing all
 your
customers off. I am very sorry that we did something to lose your business
and I would love to have the opportunity to win it back, but I understand
 if
Randy is taking good care of your parts needs. I wish you and him the
 best.
If there is ever an item that you can't seem to find, I would be more than
happy to try to help you.

True, used to, and you obviously know why but the rest of the world
doesn't. Inquiring minds want to know.

Re: [MBZ] IowaQ weather continues

We MAY get 1/4 - 1/2 of rain here after 31 straight dry days - a new D.C.
metro area record. And I just read that EL Nino is coming back, which means
dry trends will continue in the East.

If the parts had to come from MB, Rusty was charged that much. Recently
I ordered about a dozen parts that were OE (not OEM). Six injector
lines and all the rubber padding and clips for those lines as well.
Each injector line came in its own FedEx box, the rubber pads came in
another, and each different type of the plastic clamp came in their own
box (clamp 4 lines, 3 lines, etc). Think I ended up with about 11
boxes. That was a $10 shipping fee.

IIRC, Rusty lost a connection for OE parts (from somebody who was
competent) and now the only place he can find for OE parts is the
incompetent fools he uses now. My nearest dealership is 2 hours away
though so I'm stuck with that situation (and I imagine Rusty wants a
better contact as well).

My $.02
