First Freon was the culprit in damage to the atmosphere and now it's
replacement, R134a also has been found to be an environmental hazard and will
be
banned as of 2011 in the EU. The new refrigerant, known as R744, is carbon
dioxide
(CO2) based. R744 has a GWP of 1, the lowest possible level, whereas R134a has
a GWP of 1430. GWP is a new measure and stands for Global Warming Potential.
No word on when the U.S. will follow suit on the ban but it is expected to be
near simultaneous. The new refrigerant is fortunately 25% more efficient the
R134a.

Maybe. First tell me about the oil situation.
Propane is 25% more efficient than R12, which is
more efficient than R134a, and is mineral-oil
compatible. (With a little help from isobutane.)

Re: [MBZ] Who knows about Quincy air compressors?

2007-11-15 Thread Loren Faeth
Been to the factory. Interestingly enough, it is located in
Quincy. They build a decent standard type industrial compressor
range. Parts are available for most, I imagine. There is also a
shop in Quincy that handles repair parts for all kinds of
compressors. The heavy hitter there in Quincy is Gardner Denver, who
used to build lots of engine driven compressors, but now are into bigger stuff.

There is also a stove company in Quincy that builds custom commercial
stoves and ovens that dates back to 1830 or so.

Interesting place to visit, and just a few miles up The River from
Hannibal, of Mark Twain fame.

Not likely. The engine has a oil level sensor that turns on a red light

I always wanted a 10-22 International. Walnut stock all the way to the
 muzzle.
Back in the day, I think it was $74.50 for the .22 carbine, $87.50 for
 the
Deluxe Sporter, and $98.50 for the International (all three with walnut
stocks about 35 years ago)
A gun dealer near me had a set of Internationals, one in .44, the other
 in
.22 (the only .44 International I've ever seen). Wanted $600 for the
 pair in
the mid-1980's. I'd pay that $600 now if I could get them that cheap.

On the 45-70 front:
http://hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/buffalo.aspx
H&R makes a neat single shot, 32" barrel, checkered walnut, complete
 with
peep sights. Runs $300+, they call it the Buffalo Classic. I've got a
 basic
H&R (actually NEF Handi-Rifle) in 45-70. 22" barrel, matte receiver,
 black
plastic stocks. Got it on a distributor closeout for $170 a few years
 ago.

Weren't the early Winchesters in weaker chamberings like 32-20 and
 44-40?

Re: [MBZ] Diesel bulletproofness

2007-11-15 Thread Peter Frederick
You can kill a diesel just as fast as you can kill a gasser. They are
more tolerant of poor fuel, but lack of oil changes ages them pretty
fast, and they are generally more expensive to fix.

I'm thinking I'm going to play engine swap from my old car (275,000
miles and almost undetectable blowby) to the new one (about 290,000
with significant blowby). Synthetic oil makes all the difference, I'd
bet they were almost identical in condition at 150,000 or so when I got
mine.

With regular synthetic oil changes on a 60x, you should get a million
miles out of the bottom half. Probably a couple cracked heads along
the way, and a valve job every 250,000 or so.

You also have significantly less boilover protection, which is far more
important in Arizona than freeze protection in the summer. Winter in
the hills can get ya, though.

Running plain water is stupid, you will have SEVERE corrosion problems
if there is any aluminum in the cooling system (like the radiator and
head). They will corrode through in very short order.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_10/22 (no wiki on the .44 yet)

I always wanted a 10-22 International. Walnut stock all the way to the muzzle.
Back in the day, I think it was $74.50 for the .22 carbine, $87.50 for the
Deluxe Sporter, and $98.50 for the International (all three with walnut
stocks about 35 years ago)
A gun dealer near me had a set of Internationals, one in .44, the other in
.22 (the only .44 International I've ever seen). Wanted $600 for the pair in
the mid-1980's. I'd pay that $600 now if I could get them that cheap.

On the 45-70 front:
http://hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/buffalo.aspx
H&R makes a neat single shot, 32" barrel, checkered walnut, complete with
peep sights. Runs $300+, they call it the Buffalo Classic. I've got a basic
H&R (actually NEF Handi-Rifle) in 45-70. 22" barrel, matte receiver, black
plastic stocks. Got it on a distributor closeout for $170 a few years ago.

Weren't the early Winchesters in weaker chamberings like 32-20 and 44-40?

Mitch.

What I love to see is any ad which admits the car has x miles on it,
and then claims that it only has 1/2x on a new engine.
So it took you 60,000 miles to kill the engine in a brand new car,
and I should be thrilled to buy the car from you with 120,000 miles,
possibly because you wore out another engine right on schedule and
don't want to replace it again?

Pick it right now with alot of good parts, including a rebuilt engine

The great part of the auction was that the ad copy was terrible, the

100% sure we will be driving it back to KC with a minimal amount of
 work.

This will make a nice winter project.

Kaleb, will be sending you a parts request list soon. Hope you have a

RE the temperature of the thermostat... call Rusty, ask for a
thermostat, use the one he gives you. Leave it at that.

I've never changed an OM60x thermostat, but on the 617 I didn't use any
sealant, etc since the thermostat came with a gasket. I've never heard
of the housing breaking, but have heard of old bolts breaking.

If you have a digital camera just take pictures on your way in so that
you can put all the stuff thats in your way back in its place. Just
stop over-analyzing it and get in there! ;)

[MBZ] Thermostat Change 190D and Search Engine in Archives

2007-11-15 Thread Zoltan Finks
Okay, now that it looks like we are leaning toward keeping our 87
190D, I am back in the mode of needing to change the thermostat to
*hopefully* get the thing to run at 80 degreesC.

I have once again tried to see if there was a feature to search the
list archives, but it looks like we are just able to sort by subject
author or date. I was hoping I could go there and type in a search
field "thermostat and 190D" and get all the archived writings on the
subject. This would allow me to avoid making you guys go over subject
matter already covered, and thus keep your patience level in the
green.

But as such: What do I need to look out for in doing this thermostat
change? Bear in mind that most of my limited wrenching has been done
on late '60's Chryslers.

But as I look at (rather, try to see) the thermostat housing on the
190D, it's got stuff in the way, (I know: w w) and: 1. I have
heard issues of the housing cracking, and 2. I have heard of issues of
air getting trapped in the system.

Is the original housing metal or plastic? Which is better?

Do I need to apply sealant to the housing seal area before
reinstalling, or do I leave it dry?

What other issues set this apart from a simple "thermostat change"?

Somebody set me straight and help me do this job right.

Brian

The Quigley rifle was 45-90 or 45-120, remember in the movie he explains to the

They sell a Quigley reproduction I'm not sure who makes it, IIRC Cabellas

Ahh indeed they do, in 45-70, 45-110 and 45-120.

According to the movie it was a custom cartridge. It looked like a
45-70. I have seen some of the modern rifles chambered 45-70 but
they are pricey. One dealer even had a 45-70 sharps (original), and
I'd have loved to buy that. I'd settle for a 45-70 sharps.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Gun surprise

2007-11-15 Thread Gary Hurst
i have to go research this. the gun that won the west is the winchester
model of 1873, which i don't think was chambered in 45-70. the 45-70 also
dates to that time. 30-30 was later and arrived with perhaps hte most
famous lever action of them all, the winchester 1894.

now in the movie winchester 1873, jimmy stewart has to help the cavalry
fight off a group of indians. the army carries single shot rifles, putting
them at a firepower disadvantage to the indians, who use lever action
repeaters, thereby requiring the help of the civilians so they don't get
custerized.

it doesn't seem from here that we can easily make the connections between
the lame single fire 45-70 rifles and the winning of the west. where is the
smoking gun here?

Well, it was the cartridge that decimated the buffalo herds. That is
a nice rifle. Buy it for me Dad?

A lot of federal troops in the west had 45-70s. Most were rolling
block or drop-block single shot rifles, as in the Sharps I saw. It
was a model 1873, I think 187? anyhow. The 30-30 came in as a
civilian rifle. I am not sure if the government ever used the 30-30
officially. If so, it would have been in the 1870-1905 era. 30-06
was standard military issue from 1906 until the m-14 came out with
.308 1960 or so. 308 was superceded by the .223 in the M-16.

Picked up a nice 240D manny W115 (1975) on Ebay in Manhattan, KS.
$510.01. Looked at it on Wednesday. Charlie (not on this list,
unfortunately...too busy fixing everyone's cars) and I are gonna fix her up
real
nice. White exterior, nice red interior...and there is a 220D at the U
Pick it right now with alot of good parts, including a rebuilt engine
 (which I don't need).

The great part of the auction was that the ad copy was terrible, the
lady knows nothing about the car and "it starts when it wants too." I am
100% sure we will be driving it back to KC with a minimal amount of
 work.

This will make a nice winter project.

Kaleb, will be sending you a parts request list soon. Hope you have a
 115 in your back yard.

[MBZ] Some numbers on how much energy to make a new car

2007-11-15 Thread John Robbins
Ignore for a moment the CO2 == global warming that the article implies
(since I know that will spawn a 200 email debate), and just look at the
amount of CO2 and electrical energy required to make a car. Those of
you with free time that like to play with numbers can quantify the
debate of maintaining an old car vs. buying a new efficient one.

I believe they are making some modern rifles (designed to look like
historical models) chambered for 45-70.Also, IIRC, the rifle T Selleck
used in "Quigley Down Under" was a 45-70. The studio had 3 of the rifles
made by some custom gun maker in Wyoming? Idaho? somewhere up north.
Selleck is a big gun collector and one of the perks he gets is the option to
keep any/all of the guns used un his films. Star power -- it must be nice

Hi Curt,
Great rifle you have! Excellent Deer rifle - especially in brushy areas.
That .44 will knock down anything in its way ;-)

If the liberals have their way, you'd have to fill out the fed and state
paperwork and have a State Police background check before he could give that
to you. They talk about the great Gun Show loophole but there isnt one -
the FBI did an extensive study and even asked prisoners who *all* said they
never got guns at Gun Shows or Gun Dealers.

Enjoy that rifle - it should shoot great!

Chris

I had a girlfriend back when who had one of those things, one day she
calls me from work and says the car won't turn off. I say, what do you

mean the car won't turn off. Well, I can't find where to turn it off.

How did you turn it on? With the key in the ignition switch. Well,
turn it the other way and it will go off. I can't find it. What do
 you
mean you can't find it, its right where you turned it on. No its not
 there.

So I go to wherever she was, and sure enough, there is no key or
ignition switch, just a hole. The switch was mounted on the console
(where everything could fall into it, but that is another thing), and
poked down beneath the car, where salt and other road mess could get up

there into and around it. It just rusted out there where the ignition
switch hole was, and the whole deal fell down under the car while she
was driving it. I managed to crawl under (not a lot of room there, hot

stuff too) and get hold of it and turn the key off. Then sorta jammed
it back up in the hole so she could get home later. She took it to a
shop where they had some kind of shim insert to fix the thing -- "it
happens all the time on these cars."

So, there you go. Don't let your girlfriend drive it, or your wife
 either.

speaking of "Uh oh saab" I just bought a 1988 Saab 900 Turbo (may or may not
be an SPG). Anathema, I know.

Few questions: anyone have a transmission drain plug gasket? Dealer has to
order it and wants $8 for it.

Anyone know of a good local source for drain plug gaskets?

Anyone had to fix a broken motorized seatbelt? at the very least, to move
the buckle to the end of the track?

Other than that, it's pretty sweet.

Re: [MBZ] OT - 6.2 diesel suburban gotchas

2007-11-15 Thread Kevin
My 87 K30 crew cab dually that I just got running looks like it's getting
in the neighborhood of 17 mpg or so. TH400, no overdrive, 4x4, dually, with
what feels like 4.10 gears.

Sad thing is that's about the mileage of the 05 dodge crew cab dually 4x4,
with a cummins, six speed manual, and 3.73s.

Granted the cummins has almost twice the torque of the 6.2.

The 6.2 was quite a fuel efficient engine for what it was.

just bought an 88 900 turbo. Not sure if it's an SPG, but the guy claimed
it was. In any case, it's faster than anything else i've had (?) or at
least it -feels- faster. The PO tweaked the APG to increase the turbo
boost. Scared the snot out of the SO - her nail marks are still in my right

Re: [MBZ] OT - 6.2 diesel suburban gotchas

2007-11-15 Thread R A Bennell
What sort of fuel mileage can one expect from such a beast? I have often been
tempted but have not yet bought one.
I wonder if it would be significantly better than a gas engine in a similar
truck?

Put a real fuel filter/water separator on it. You can buy the Roosa
Master filter pair from a tractor salvage yard. Most John Deere
Diesels from 4020 on have them. Most of the problems of the GM
diesel stem from water in the fuel/plugged filter. The factory put
on an itty bitty filter, not much more than the MB see-thru
prefilter, that passes ALL water through to the nozzles, where it ruins them.

Side benefits of the Master filters: They are see thru; you can buy
replacements lotsa places, including every JD dealer in the
country. If you are stranded, you have about a 50/50 chance of the
nearest farm having spares; they filter out finer particles than the
MB OEM filters.

Re: [MBZ] new aquisition: Projeckt-Wagen #1

2007-11-15 Thread Christopher McCann
rust is not bad. No holes in the floor, for example. Door/panel rust can be
repaired (will use Bergsma's fiberglass method). Rocker panels need a little
reinforcement. Interior is fabulous, except for drivers seat. Totally dry,
except for valve cover leak. It was a good buy. Parts car on ebay in Cinci, OH
(too far for me) was at $175, needs new clutch, but that one had TONS of rust.

It is a RODBENDER. At 200k miles the cylinder(s) got ovalled out, it started

2007-11-15 Thread Christopher McCann
Picked up a nice 240D manny W115 (1975) on Ebay in Manhattan, KS. $510.01.
Looked at it on Wednesday. Charlie (not on this list, unfortunately...too busy
fixing everyone's cars) and I are gonna fix her up real nice. White exterior,
nice red interior...and there is a 220D at the U Pick it right now with alot of
good parts, including a rebuilt engine (which I don't need).

The great part of the auction was that the ad copy was terrible, the lady knows
nothing about the car and "it starts when it wants too." I am 100% sure we will
be driving it back to KC with a minimal amount of work.

This will make a nice winter project.

Kaleb, will be sending you a parts request list soon. Hope you have a 115 in

OK, here goes. When you bring it home and start finding
out all the things that _aren't_ so cool, expect much
ridicule from us instead of sympathy as you tell us
your Saab story. :-)

Does that help?

There's plenty of room in my life for non-MB's, of whatever
stripe. Just no pods. Never a pod. Also called A-B adapters,
as in 'Point A to...'.

There's an ad. out right now where somebody's looking out in

OK, here goes. When you bring it home and start finding
out all the things that _aren't_ so cool, expect much
ridicule from us instead of sympathy as you tell us

Does that help?

There's plenty of room in my life for non-MB's, of whatever

There's an ad. out right now where somebody's looking out in

No, that's not how they work. There is a failure mode where
the vacuum units can only hold _one_ speed, somewhere around
60 MPH. There's enough circuitry in any of them to cause
some really weird behavior when something goes wrong.

I've repaired around a dozen of these things, using nothing
but solder. (And one that required a capacitor, too.) You
have to be able to solder fairly well, however, it's a big
job and a fairly touchy one as well.

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/cwcruise.html

I figure on about two hours to repair one, not including
removal and installation, or paint stripper time.

Re: [MBZ] Stop me please

2007-11-15 Thread Rich Thomas
I had a girlfriend back when who had one of those things, one day she
calls me from work and says the car won't turn off. I say, what do you
mean the car won't turn off. Well, I can't find where to turn it off.
How did you turn it on? With the key in the ignition switch. Well,
turn it the other way and it will go off. I can't find it. What do you
mean you can't find it, its right where you turned it on. No its not there.

Don't let your girlfriend drive it, or your wife either.

The guy has been trying to sell it for at least a year that I know of (I

vauge description.

Anyway he's asking $2250, if the car is what he says it is I plan to offer
around $1500 which is what I paid for my 240D in similar condition.

My cruise holds well but only in about 10 mph increments. E.g. if I
try to set it at anything between about 60 - 70 MPH it will accelerate
up to about 70 and then hold steady. Is this just how they work or is

How likely is it that a key was left in the pan AT THE FACTORY in the
first place? THAT seems unlikely to me... I'd think the pan would be
about the last thing installed on a new engine and probably done at
its own "station" on the line. More likely, if the story is true at
all, it was dropped in during some subsequent repair or maintenance
job.

Should be one in that car, if it's like mine. I think the 560's

It's behind the glove box, right side. Black, oriented narrow
edge forwards, pins down. (The kick panel has the small relays
behind it.) Two rows of pins, one row longer than the other.
You jumper across the two pins in the socket like so:

A B
C D
E F
G**H
I

The last two paralleled pins closest to you, leaving the one odd
pin out. One is labeled 87 on the relay, the other is, IIRC, 30.
Be careful, 30 is hot at all times. I use a switch with two pins
salvaged from a wiring harness. I plug in the two pins, then I
flip the switch. Should be about 5A or so, if it's like my car.

There's one being pimped by a guy named Dennis Lee for gasoline engines
- he claims fuel economy improvements of 50% to 200%. Purely voodoo.

The guy also claims to have a "pre-ignition catalytic converter" that
reduces fuel to plasma and will enable your engine to run on any liquid
including steak sauce or pickle juice (but have you priced pickle juice
at the pump lately?,) a free electricity device (perpetual motion plus)
and a noiseless jackhammer.

There is a guy locally selling the "gas-saver" for $1,500 installed.
