I've been thinking about this and the first thing you may want to check is
to verify if your servo is moving at all. A real good check is to turn your
engine on and run it for a few minutes then shut it off and listen to see if
you can hear the servo returning to the park position. If you're not sure,
then pop the hood and repeat the test. If things are quiet it should be
fairly obvious if is running. Let us know how that goes.

[MBZ] A Touching Christmas Story

2008-12-14 Thread MG

Just so you know. Seems everyone can have a bad day some time.

Manfred

 A Touching Christmas Story

A Christmas Story for people having a bad day:
When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce
toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the
Pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which
stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were
about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out,
Heaven knows where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked,
the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot
of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drank
all the cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally
dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces
all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice
had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and irritated Santa marched to the door,
yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big
Christmas tree.
The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a
lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to
stick it?'

And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas
tree.

In that case, jack the car up in the rear and support on jack
stands. There are four mounts, the front ones go in one way, the
rears the other.

You will need to drop the exhaust (not remove, just lower). You may
need to remove the speed sensor at the differential to prevent
pulling the wires off as well.

Remove the two bolts, one front and one rear while supporting the
subframe with a jack, then lower the subframe until you have
sufficient clearance to use a cup type puller to remove the mounts.
A piece of plastic pipe and some steel plate should work, but they
may be pretty well stuck. As noted, one goes in from the top and I
don't remember at the moment which one it is.

Once the old ones are out, pull the new ones in (silicone grease or
dish detergent will make this much easier), lift the subframe back
up, and install new bolts. All the necessary bits come with the new
mounts.

Repeat for the other side.

Watch for stress on the brake lines -- you may want to remove them.
This is a good time to change the brake fluid if you have not
recently, too.

If you also need new differential mounts and rear suspension links,
it's only requires removing the driveshaft and brake lines to drop
the entire subframe off the car

2008-12-14 Thread Hendrik Fay
Thanks for the info Peter, how does one check the condition of the diff
mounts in car?
Also according to the official MB line on sub-frame removal the exhaust
has to come out, part of the SLS has to go, blah blah blah, fuel lines,
more blah blah blah. Personally I'd be more inclined to remove the brake
calipers instead of messing with brake fluid, as my car has ABS it is
going to be more technical to bleed the system.
I found a website which shows a home made tool
http://mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=149722 which don't
look too hard to create. A member of the Ozbenz forum beat me in an ebay
auction for the proper MB tool to do this job and I asked him if he'd be
interested in selling me the tool after he has done his cars but I think
by the time that happens I'll be too old to do much of anything, except
talk about the good old days when I was able to work on cars and chase
nursey around the old folks home. Although according to Murphy's law,
the minute you finish the home made tool (after much cursing and burning
of hands) the phone will ring.

piece of plastic pipe and some steel plate should work, but they may
be pretty well stuck. As noted, one goes in from the top and I don't
remember at the moment which one it is.

Once the old ones are out, pull the new ones in (silicone grease or
dish detergent will make this much easier), lift the subframe back up,
and install new bolts. All the necessary bits come with the new mounts.

Repeat for the other side.

Watch for stress on the brake lines -- you may want to remove them.
This is a good time to change the brake fluid if you have not
recently, too.

If you also need new differential mounts and rear suspension links,
it's only requires removing the driveshaft and brake lines to drop the
entire subframe off the car

[MBZ] approximate cost of OM603 valve job?

1. Can the valves on the OM603 be ground? I think some valves cannot be ground.
2. If they can, what is the approximate cost of a valve job for this engine?

We've had many pinto wagons in the family, and also, we had a couple Murcury
Bobcat hatchbacks. They included a brown '72 Wagon with the automatic, 100%
dependable but SLOW, a blue '74 wagon, parts donor for the '72,
orange '78 with primered orange front end since it had been wrecked by the
PO, light blue '79 Bobcat hatchback, a very good runner with 135K on it and
still kicking when we sold it), '80 yellow Bobcat hatch for parts, and the
white '80 Pinto Wagon with 80K original miles. They are easy enough to work
on, but I much prefer the MB diesels, of course.

I drove a 71-1/2 Pinto Fastback (the one with the big back window) as the third
in the chain of hand-me-downs through the family. Dad bought it new for Mom,
big brother got it next, then I got it. It was in good shape when I got it,
despite my brother having owned it (not a car person) and I recall putting many
trouble-free miles on it. Mine had the 2000cc inline OHC 4 banger which was
only used for a couple of years. A good engine that was tough to kill.

And yes, it was one covered by the infamous exploding gas tank recall

We had a couple in our family, including a wagon. Ok, build
 quality wasn't
anything great, but then again, a Datson 510 was nothing to
 write home

 that name tag at the

All of our Pintos were dark green, the wagon had the classy

No, there was a metal frame to the lift gate with a large window in it. I
think it was only made for a short time, as there were issues with identifying
the proper model year on it a couple of times. That's why I said it was a
71-1/2.

I really wanted one of the panel wagons but could never find one in decent
shape.

[MBZ] 201 ACC pushbutton unit

2008-12-14 Thread Loren Faeth
In housecleaning, I came across a ACC pushbutton unit for a 201. It
has a manufacture tag on it 12-84, so it was surely from an 85
model. It is complete in the wood panel (with temp control) and also
has the fan push button unit. If anyone can use it, it is for
sale. It seems to be different than the ones in 124 and 126 models
from 1986-1988 I have had. Anyhow, if anyone wants it make me an

It is, it has an extra main button, and a separate AC control
selector among other differences. Also, there are two versions
out there for the 201, so it wouldn't hurt to post its part number.
So, early and late 201 are incompatible, IIRC.

[MBZ] I make it back, Walmart hell

2008-12-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well as we left off I was going to go back to walmart first thing this
morning to get that tire mounted for the trailer. So I show up first
thing. Wait for 20 minutes for somebody to show up to help everyone in
line. They say sure they will take care of it, will be 2 hours though.
Crap. Ended up being nearly 4 hours before they got to it. All the
had ahead of me was 2 cars needing tires, and one of those was only
getting 2 tires. Geez, they are slow. So when they get to it, the
start to proceed to tell me how they cant do it because its a used tire
etc. I tell them I have been there nearly 4 hours to be told this, and
its just going on a trailer. Finally they go ahead and do it. Takes
them less than 5 minutes of course to mount the stupid thing. Why the
hell they could not have just had somebody mount it real quick in the
morning I dont know. Anyway, that put me way behind so I got to run
into the ice storm on the way back. Actually when I hit the rain it was
not quite cold enough to freeze and it stopped long enough for me to get
home anyway.

Re: [MBZ] I make it back, Walmart hell (TRAILER TIRES)

2008-12-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well here is the deal, since I have had my trailer, I have been all over
the country with it with no spare at all. Well, the original tires
started getting worn so i started throwing a wheel in the back for a
spare. Well, one time I had a tire go flat and I needed the spare.
Would not fit. Crap, should have checked. Anyway, got another tire
mounted and continued on. A few weeks ago, I buy a new rim to use as a
spare off a seller on ebay. First one is wrong size. 2nd one (arrived
friday before this trip) wrong size, so lets see what the 3rd one is. I
would have had the spare mounted to it had it been the correct size. On
another subject, a little while ago I replaced all the trailer tires
with some good used michelin car tires I had. The one that started to
blow out was a little dry rotted I think but not sure if that had
anything to do with it (belt seperation I guess?). Anyway, have been
thinking now, is it OK to run car tires on a trailer? I have done a
little short bit of research and some say yes, some say no. Seems car
tires might last a little longer that trailer rated tires, and trailer
tires I think you are only supposed to go up to 65mph with them. Also
car tires are cheaper but the air pressure rating is usually much lower
than trailer tires, and the weight rating is lower. For instance, on
tirerack.com, the only trailer tires I see are goodyear, with a load
rating of 1820lb or so. With car tires, I find some humho tires with
rating of sometihng like 1598 or so. The reviews in the goodyear
trailer tires look like they have blow out often. The load star trailer
tires that came new on my trailer did not seem to last long before they
were bald. I think car tires might last longer. Anybody got any thoughts?

Thats funny. My grandparents used to have this 68 Olds Delmont 88 they
bought new. My dad then got it after they bought a new 86 Olds Cutlass
Cierra and he drove it, mostly to the fishing hole. Anyway, it got the
nickname of land shark because it was so big.

[MBZ] rant about tires

2008-12-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
OK, just bought brand new tires for the 190D, got another 190D that
needs new tires. The 140 diesel will need new tires soon. The 140 I
just picked up will need new tires if I keep it. The trailer probably
should have new tires. The big dollar one is the truck, its going to
need new tires real soon, almost down to the wear bars. Those are
expensive. Crap.

Everything except disposal fee -- I kept the old tires to give to Debbie's
brother (he is building a hot rod). Didn't get any special (road hazard?)
warranty other than the 80,000 mile warranty that comes with the tires. Yea,
they were pricey but should be the only tires I ever have to buy for the car
and they are supposed to be really good in snow and ice, plus perform well
on dry pavement. I spent probably $100 more than I would have spent for
budget tires, and it was worth the extra cost to me. And if the tires are
still good when the 300E dies, I will keep them to put on my next 300E.

The big enemy of tires is heat.

The greatest source of heat is tire flex.

Tire flex decreases as air pressure increases.

As I understand, truck and trailer tire ratings have a greater
overload margine than passenger car tires.

So, how much weight is on the tire? Are car tires an option?

[MBZ] Snow tires

2008-12-14 Thread OK Don
Since we're in line to get the ice/snow storm (only 30% chance
though), I went to put the snow tires that came with the car from
Donald Snook on this afternoon. When I let the first tire down, a LOT
of 1 to 2 cracks appeared on the sidewall. Crap - dry rotted tire.
Off it came, and on went the standard tire.

I need 2 more of the 8 hole wheels so I can get four snow tires, mount
them on the original 15 hole wheels, and have all the (8) standard
tires on 8 hole wheels.
To echo Kaleb's re-tirement lament, the van needs new tires as well.

I did find one 14 steel wheel from a 115 in the shed, anyone want it
for the cost of shipping?

I don't remember what brand snow tires I put on the car - you can ask Ok Don
and see if he likes them. I never did put four snow tires on the car, it
wasn't worth it to me driving in the limited amount of snow that we get here
 in Kansas.

2008-12-14 Thread Tom Hargrave
Good tires cost good money but cheap tires cost more in the long run
because you pay more to mount cheap tires more often.

holy CRAP, why would you spend that much on tires? Are they made of

WalMart is slow on purpose. The longer they take the more likely you
will buy something in the store.

You did buy something, right?

Subject: [MBZ] I make it back, Walmart hell

2008-12-14 Thread Tom Hargrave
I don't know but I do know that a neighbor was pulling a ski boat with his
3/4 ton Suburban and had 3 blow-outs in one year.

It turns out that the tires he was running weren't up to the load even
though the tong weight + 1/4 of the Suburban weight were well under what was
marked on the tire sidewalls. He went up one load rating and the problems
went away.

Well take for instance, how much does a 140 weight? Im not sure. Its a
heavy car I know that. Trailer is a regular old steel flat bed 18'
trailer. dont know how much that weights. Tires I have on now are 1499
per tire, so 5996 total capacity. Thats probably plenty for many small
to medium cars, but wonder if the 140 was too much weight

Anyway, have been thinking now, is it OK to run car tires on
 a trailer?

 Yes. Or no.

I have done a little short bit of research and some say yes,
some say no. Seems car tires might last a little longer
that trailer rated tires, and trailer tires I think you are
only supposed to go up to 65mph with them.

Most of my experience with trailer tires is 22 inch, so that
 won't help much.

  Also car tires
are cheaper but the air pressure rating is usually much
lower than trailer tires, and the weight rating is lower.

And that's why the answer is not clear. If you need the weight
rating, use truck or trailer tires - not car tires.

The reviews in the goodyear trailer tires look
like they have blow out often.

Maybe that's because only folks who actually haul weight
will spend money with the hi-load tires and because the tires
are being worked hard they fail?

The load star trailer tires that came new on my trailer did
not seem to last long before they were bald. I think car
tires might last longer. Anybody got any thoughts?

The big enemy of tires is heat.

The greatest source of heat is tire flex.

Tire flex decreases as air pressure increases.

As I understand, truck and trailer tire ratings have a greater
overload margine than passenger car tires.

So, how much weight is on the tire? Are car tires an option?

Re: [MBZ] lubricants

2008-12-14 Thread Tom Hargrave
The best grease for door hinges is white lithium. Unlike wheel bearing
grease, the grease flows easy into hinges.

BTW, if your hinge is squeaking then it may already be too late. On the good
side, GM hinge bushings are cheap easy to replace. They are actually
designed to be serviced in a few minutes.

What is the best lubricant/grease to use on door hinges? The driver's door
on my Cadillac is squealing like crazy when I open the door when it is cold.
The door opens fine, it just makes a terrible squeal.

Our car hauler weighs around 1800#. The typical MB I'd put on
it is something like 3400-3800#, IIRC. My pickup truck is 7000#.
The trailer tires are holding the car, plus another 2000# of load.

Tires I have on now are 1499 per tire, so 5996 total capacity.

So that's 6000# with four tires. Right around what the trailer
and car weigh together.
