Re: [MBZ] 560

2009-03-09 Thread LarryT
I wouldn't call he 560 rare - of curse it all depends on what specific 560
you're talking about. There was the top of the line 560SEL 4 dr sedan
typically with all the bells and whistles. Also, we need to know the
chassis type of the mod year as it could be a W126 or a W140. Both are
incredible cruising machine. Not inexpensive to own maintain but when all
is working preperly it is a true experience.

Again, depending on the chassis and model, it may have some built in
problems. Things like HVAC, dash, wiring, etc can be troublesome on some
vehicles.

Along with the SEL there's a SL and SLC - the roadster and coupe version of
the 2 dr sports car. Also, it was produced over a ~20 year time period

You asked about getting the engine/trans? Depends on what you want to use
it in. With a SEL or SL you could stuff it right in, but it's a lot of
engine. Depending on how it was maintained it may be a dream or a
igtmare --

Good luck - HTHs

A US-spec 560SEL is not rare. The Europe-only 560SE is very rare, and
the euro-spec engine is a lot more powerful than the US engine.

They were the top-of-the-line model at the time and are absolutely

LarryT
__

Since your wife will be going to the mall more often than you, probably
better to get a car with an automatic transmission. She won't want to be
pushing clutch pedals and shifting gears, so why not spend a little less
money and get a real Mercedes such as the MB SLR McLaren, the fastest A/T
car in the world; and for only $457,000?

http://www.thesupercars.org/top-cars/most-expensive-cars-in-the-world-top-10-list-2007-2008/

It only does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and only has a top speed of 207 mph, but
that's probably fast enough since she'll be talking on her cell phone most
of the time.

Your car, on the other hand, should definitely make a statement; so nothing
less than the second fastest car, the Bugatti Veyron, 0-60 mph in 2.5
seconds, top speed of 253 mph., and the worlds top price of $1,192,000,
would suffice. Rusty can probably get you a discount.

[MBZ] OT: The hits keep on coming

2009-03-09 Thread Curt Raymond
About a month ago I noticed a little pain in my shoulder from time to time.
About a week after that I was out scraping ice off the walk and threw out my
back...
My back is feeling much better and today I had a followup with my chiropractor.
I just happened to mention the shoulder to him and he ran me through a bunch of
tests. He thinks I've got a rotator cuff strain which has caused bursitis(sp)
which is basically just inflammation of the bursa (sp) sacs. He says its
probably not a big deal since we've caught it early. Heck man if his is early
I'd hate to hear how long people usually wait for this sort of thing.
In the last month its gone from a small twinge now and again to a lingering
burning ache with twinges that will levitate me out of bed in the night.
He did some ultrasound on it today and and upper back adjustment (if you've
never had an upper back adjustment I can't recommend it enough, makes me feel
like a new man) an it feels MUCH better overall although its snowing today
which seems to aggravate it.

MB content: I ordered a replacement caliper for my 240D yesterday, it should be
in by now but as its snowing I've got no getup and go to go get it, maybe this
weekend.

Curt, you can relax: your spelling was perfect.

I had major rotator suff surgery back in 3/2002, and have been pain free
since, although I now have a permanent weakness in external rotation in that
shoulder. The surgeon spent 3.5 hrs. sewing together the shreds of torn
rotator cuff, and didn't use a titanium anchor pin. The rehab was lengthy
but manageable; I was playing squash again in 5 months.

I was going to a guy for awhile for my back that was bigger than I am, built

I'd bet that at least 80% of people who work on computers could use the upper

Re: [MBZ] OT: The hits keep on coming

2009-03-09 Thread Curt Raymond
I threw out my back for the first time when I was 18. It made me a week late to
report at Boy Scout camp and made the first week of teaching Archery
interesting.

My wife says most of my problems stem from having hypermobility in most of my
joints but not spending much time on flexability or strength training. I spend
all week at the computer or in the classroom and on the weekend decide I can
toss around snowmobiles or firewood and whatnot like I do it everyday...

Here is a way to find a good CHiro.

Go to http://www.activator.com/ and click on the find a doctor link,
Curt especially.

Activator is way different than old fashioned Chiro or osteopath
physical manipulation. Activator method uses a small clicker to
move things back into place. Once you try it, you will never go back.

Re: [MBZ] Growly and vibrating tandem pump 300TE......fixed

2009-03-09 Thread Hendrik Fay
Looks like I owe Peter a cigar, it turned out to be the alternator
pulley being off center, genius auto electrician used the old non
springy spring washer to fasten the pulley. Came loose and wore an
oblong hole in the pulley, the auto sparky re-tightened it but did not
check that it was center, me being a trusting fool didn't check it either.

Anyway all is fixed now and everything is quiet, for the time being.

Don't forget the alternator and the water pump too And the fan is
not on the water pump, it's on a separate bearing, and that can be bad
too. Take the belt off and check everything for play and roughness.
If you did replace the belt tensioner roller, it should be good, but
this is the 21st century and there is no reason to think it's not bad
in the box.

Anyway this makes me think that the pump is not the culprit, now it's
onto the fan belt tensioner, although it is only a few months old,
maybe try a new tensioner dampener, as it is pretty old.

Ooooh the joys of working on cars.

OK so I put a new seal kit in the tandem pump but the noise is still
there, new hose from MB is 570 oz beans and they come from Germany.
The reason I am talking hose is that I rebuilt the original high
pressure expansion hose after it blew a hole in it. Everything was
sweet for a while but then this noise started.
My plan now is to take the guts out of the tandem pump (the little
pistons out of the SLS part and vanes out of the PS part) to see if
this eliminates the noise.

I have tried to find a SH hose but have not have much luck locally.
Does anyone see a problem with removing those parts out of the pump
and then running it?

Both fluids full up? Growling is usually cavitation from lack of
fluid. If fluids are full, start looking for a pump, I guess. The
pumps can be rebuilt, but getting the new seal in is a bear. I
ruined one, so my rebuild cost me $160 for the 2 kits. To get a
kit, you have to have all the info off the pump plate as well as
the VIN.

The tandem pump in my 89 300TE makes a growling noisy and vibrates

Got the missus to turn the steering wheel while I held the motor
at 1300rpm but made no difference to the noise. Power steering is
fine and ride level control seems to be working OK, fluid is being
pumped as I can see it flowing back into the reservoir.
Is this noise an indication that the pump is heading south, are
there any other tests I can do?
I eliminated the AC compressor but it may be the water pump but
like I said the tandem pump is vibrating, whilst the water pump is
not.
Ahh well the good news is that it is not the motor or the gearbox
because when the fan belt is removed the noise is gone.
Unfortunately I can't run components individually, this is an
advantage of the multi belt set up.

To date, the reputation of the 917 is legendary. Therefore, 50 international

built 65 units of the 917: 44 sports cars as short-tail and long-tail coupés,
two PA Spyders as well as 19 sports cars as CanAm and Interseries Spyders with

It won't unless:
1. you get one to the US
2. You add an extra quart to each gallon of fuel, to make it an
imperial gallon (160 FL Oz.)

Re: [MBZ] Anniversary: 40 Years of the Porsche 917

2009-03-09 Thread Loren Faeth
I have a front porsche and a side porsche. Both have probably been
on the house since it was built. then a few years ago I added a
small deck that could be considered the back porsche 911 because I
was building it and went in for a trink, and saw the WTC collapse on live tv.

Re: [MBZ] A few informal road tests

2009-03-09 Thread Luther

Toyota Prius
Geneva marked the European debut of the new Prius, along with the
promise that it will deliver an impressive 46 percent increase in
smugness levels. The new car's revised hybrid drive system is now said
to be even more complicated, guaranteeing that the self-righteous idiots
that buy a Prius will have even less chance of understanding it and
therefore almost no hope of realising that it involves carting around a
load of extra weight and rare metals and that if they really wanted to
save the bloody planet they'd get a small locally made diesel.

HAHAHAHA, that's awesome and right to the point!

[MBZ] OT: Computerz

2009-03-09 Thread Jim Cathey

SWMBA has decided that we need to give her mother one of our
Pismos (little does she know that I have a replacement lined
up!) and hook her up with Verizon broadband wireless. (They
have dial-up right now.) I got a PC5750 card today for $20,
so we should be set. We chose Verizon because that's the
phone service they have, as does SWMBA's brother's family,
who will actually be getting tagged with the bill. I suppose
we'll be tech support, and throw them money from time to time
for our share. (This is the cast-off Pismo, with the slow CPU,
no built-in Airport [which MIL can't use anyway], and a CD drive.
Bad Ethernet port too. Works pretty well, though, and it's the
one I end up using the most! So it'll be a good unit, if it
works out at all.)

Dumb?

Almost as smart as my hooking my parents up with a new mac mini after
playing nursemaid to the turd of a series of PCs they had. Since I
set that little joy up, not a call for tech support.

[MBZ] That MB pick up is actually rare

2009-03-09 Thread Hendrik Fay
A few days ago someone posted this
http://santafe.craigslist.org/cto/1061700386.html I posted that on the
ozbenz forum, knowing that the sponsor has a soft spot for those old
monsters (particularly the bus/coach variants) and apparently there is
not a whole lot of those left with a factory tray fitted. Most having
been driven into the ground or butchered.

So that may be a good deal, depending on condition.

Not really. With the Mac, once it's working it's likely to _stay_
working - unlike the other commercial choice

And if you will be doing admin duties anyway, use a system you
like and know.

_I_ think Linux on it would be ideal!! *grin*

Both my mother and mother-in-law are now on Debian
machines that I can ssh into to admin. Since I was doing the
admin anyway, it's better for all involved that I can do it
without driving miles measured with three digits.
