Hi Wilton - Not sure who this is directed to, but the iPhone and lots of
other similar phones do all of this stuff - including having MS Office on
them. To use the internet and email I think you need to have a data plan
for them. I'm too cheap, especially when I can get it for free.

You do have to have a 'hotspot' to download an send emails, but I have
 done
it when travelling, though not when moving ... you are never in a hotspot
long enough. The more expensive option [which I don't use] is to have a
Bluetooth capable telephone and link the IPAQ to the phone for continuous
 on
the go communications and GPS extras. Doing much writing is troublesome
 on
it though. You can write on the screen [good handwriting to text
 software],
use the on screen keyboard, or do what I do and get a Bluetooth mouse and
keyboard [I use an iGo Stowaway] for actual composition. You can surf the
internet, bid on eBay items, or check email. It connects to your home
computer via USB connection for Outlook, and also has Word, PowerPoint,
Excel, etc. in Mobile form. I did about 25 pages of my current writing
project on it by going to restaurants early and writing while waiting for
the rest of the crew to show up. I'm sold on it - though I would like to
have a phone built in. I always get a Square Trade warranty on the
electronics I buy on eBay, and after 2 years of continuous use they sent
back my $375 for the used machine because they couldn't repair it. I
 bought
a Sony UX380N ultra mobile PC for $600 [a full computer in a very small
package], then decided I would rather have the IPAQ RX5915 so resold it
 and
bought another IPAQ for $112 [I found one cheap because I didn't need all
the extras, I still had those]. I use it for GPS, Google Maps, music and
can watch videos, though I never got the correct software to do that
properly. [I use a 4 Gb SD card for extra storage]. I also use it to
 play
Monopoly, Yatzee, and a dozen other games during short waits. Could be
 that
one of the new Smart Phones would be good for you as they also have that
stuff built in and are a phone. I'm just not willing to pay for a data
plan. Users choice, but I wanted something I could wear on my belt and
 use
a lot every day, and this is it for me.
 BillR
 -
Looks like IPAQ would have one with the cellphone and internet feature.
Getting one with the cellphone feature sounds like a good idea since that
would eliminate one carry-around item. Come to think of it, believe I did

 see where some cellphones now have GPS.  GPS plus cellphone plus internet;

all in one. That would be the thing to have.

In the US, all 85`s are W123s (if imported by MBUSA) The range of years
(for W123) in Germany was different than here. I bleive in Germany, it
went from 76 to 85. The W124s started a year earlier over there also. We
get every thing a year after Europe for some reason.
I looked for mine for a very long time. 3 months after I bought it, it
was totalled, so i didnt get much time behind the wheel, mostly fixing it
up. I only put a little over 200 hundred miles on it.

[MBZ] More from Chrysler

2009-05-21 Thread Tom Hargrave
product and viability plans presented to
the U.S. Treasury, which include our receiving continued funding for the
development and deployment of advanced technology vehicles from the DOE
section 136 fund. Together with our alliance partner, we will focus our
resources on how to use Fiat’s fuel-saving technologies and our ENVI
electric-drive program to meet the regulations, support our revitalization,
benefit American consumers and help the country achieve energy security and
environmental sustainability.

As we move quickly through the restructuring process, we have received
interim approval for an additional $860 million in debtor-in-possession
(DIP) financing today from the U.S. government. Of this additional loan
amount, $600 million will support GMAC to provide a seamless transition as
it begins providing floor-plan financing for our dealerships as well as
consumer loans to our customers immediately upon the close of the
transaction. An additional $260 million is to replace funds transferred to
Chrysler Canada, as agreed upon in the pre-petition funding from the
Canadian government.

Finally, when we emerge from bankruptcy and complete our alliance with Fiat,
it will be under the leadership of a new chairman. As I mentioned to you
before, when the new company emerges, it will be an appropriate time for me
to step aside and return to Cerberus as an advisor. Today, we announced that
C. Robert Kidder, the former chairman of Borden Chemical Inc. and of
Duracell International Inc., will become chairman of Chrysler Group LLC,
which is the name our organization will go by once we emerge from bankruptcy
and complete our strategic global alliance with Fiat SpA. With his broad
expertise serving on numerous world-class boards and his accomplished
business background, Bob Kidder will provide the leadership and strategic
counsel that will help to create a strong global competitor moving forward.

I want to end this note by telling you how much I appreciate your hard work
and continued focus during this turbulent time. Thanks to your efforts,
Chrysler will be positioned for long-term success when it emerges from this
restructuring process.

That part where he addresses the jettisoned dealers who operated in good
faith, invested loads of money, and who are left holding inventory,
facilities, staff, and customer commitments must have been cut out of my
copy. And how the union gets their (large) piece of the pie. And how
the president and US gummint engineered this whole thing in
contravention of existing laws, e.g., a little principle called due
process, that are supposed to deal with these kinds of situations.

Did anyone else get that in their missive?

See here for another perspective, one that rings a bit more true:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124277581459836917.html

Fairness in a law-abiding society is due process. In the Chrysler
bankruptcy, the administration hijacked the legal forms for a political
end that it could have delivered honestly by the government buying
Chrysler out of liquidation and handing it to the UAW.

Re: [MBZ] OT Garmin kudos

2009-05-21 Thread LWB250

I have used Garmin products for about 5-6 years. I have one of their handheld
units (eTrex Vista) that I have used for backpacking/hiking and it kicks butt.
I have both the navigation software as well as the topo maps for the US and
Alaska.

It locked up on me one time, and after a very pleasant 30 minutes or so with a
very patient Garmin employee, they ended up sending me a replacement.

I am getting ready to purchase GPS' for our service vehicle fleet, and would be
interested in hearing about anyone's current experiences with their in-car
products. I don't need BlueTooth or anything fancy, just a navigation GPS that
I can load latitude and longitude points into for cell tower locations.

I would add that I have an older Tom Tom in my car that a friend gave me.
While it works fairly well, I don't like it was well as the Garmin for a number
of reasons. I keep my eTrex Vista on my motorcycle - not for navigation, but
because it records tracks and allows me to keep a log of where I have traveled
on my bike.

After 10 minutes talking to a young guy at the local stealer, explaining
to him what this part was

 http://www.buymbparts.com/item.wws?sku=W0133-1633859itempk=72149mfr=Febiweight=0.12
he finally finds it (or at least I think he does, he didn't really know
what it was) once I give him the VIN of the TD. It's $97.20 GAG!!!

Rusty's price is $25.96, here has it for $23.95

 http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1979/mercedes/300td/diesel_injection/vacuum_pump_repair_kit.html

I know there is a little overhead associated with running a dealership,
but 4X the price?! Must be paying for that Maybach studio.

Re: [MBZ] HELP! LOW/NO OIL PRESSURE

2009-05-21 Thread ernest breakfield
not positive which way it would work on that year/model, but regardless,
it would make sense to deal with the known instrumentation problem
first, rather than ASSuME the gauge is indicating a larger problem.
at the very least, put a mechanical gauge on it to try to verify if
there really even *is* a problem, before you start getting worried about
chasing down bigger potential issues...

cheers!

a question for the veterans; isn't there a ground behind the
instrument panel that's known to occasionally be a problem with these
things? IIRC, isn't its failure mode pretty-much exactly like the
wonkiness with the temp and fuel gauges that's being reported here?

cheers!

'82 300SD 314k daily driver. Runs great. Lately, I'd been noticing
oil pressure seemed a bit low at idle, but my idle's set too low, so
I didn't think much of it. Today, I notice a half-bar at idle.
Slipped it into Neutral, and it came up to a bar. Next short trip,
same day, OP fine until car warmed up, then it went down to barely
off the peg at idle. Turned around to come home, and OP gradually
tailed off to nothing. Stopped the car. Checked oil level, which was
fine. Oil seemed a bit thin, but not watery by any means, and the
engine was hot. Looked like plenty of oil sitting on the cam when I
took the OP filler cap off to check. Started up again, and had
between 2 and 3 bar at 2k rpm. Had just a few blocks to go, so drove
it back. Needle was quite erratic--would go up to the top peg, then
fall down to 0. WHen revved up it would suddenly jump up--most of
the time. Sometimes it wouldn't move at all. Got home, with no
other signs of low OP--engine ran fine, no unusual noises, no blue
smoke.

What gives? How can I test the gauge/sensor? Is there any way I can
temporarily wire in an aux OP gauge to check? If so, how. I have a
somewhat jumpy temp gauge and fuel gauge, and the tach is inop most
of the time, so I'm hoping it's just electrical. Is there a
pattern/failure mode for 617 oil pumps? Could something be
intermittantly plugging the pickup tube screen? I'm trying to think
of everything I can here. Car is parked until I figure this one out.
Any advice/test procedures appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

adding much to the discussion on the MB list. We remodeled our
kitchen! Some of it was done by a contractor and I did some of the
work (only the easiest stuff where I couldn't hurt myself too bad).
I thought you all might be interested in seeing the results. This is
just a small collection of the pictures. I have many more pictures
of the final result. Our house was built in 1929 and we tried to
keep some of the architectural character of the house. It had lots
of cool arches and really beautiful woodwork. It was a small kitchen
and we also had a Breakfast nook that was really just a small room
off of the kitchen that ended up being not very usable. So, we tore
out the wall between the two rooms and expanded the kitchen. It
practically doubled the space in the kitchen. So, here are some of
the before and after pics.

Florida is a no-fault state, too. The fun part is fighting it out with the
insurance companies. I've had State Farm for nearly 30 years, and they always
gave me full replacement value on any car, regardless of age. All I had to do
was provide legitimate current market sales information for them to honor the
claim. I started providing it to them up front when I bought a car so they had
it. Even if there was a claim later on and the information was dated, there
was a trail, so to speak, showing what the value had been at the time of
purchase.

Good luck!

(I am SO glad I don't live in a no-fault state now)

2009-05-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I wish 6 weeks. Its usually 6 months or more. In fact, I have some
stuff that I still have not received that was ordered 6 years ago.

Gary Hurst wrote:

notes: Hi! I just wanted to say that I am thoroughly impressed with
your customer care and lightning fast shipping! I placed my order
LATE yesterday, and received my order at about 11am this morning! :O
Incredible! Keep up the good work! :)

i get customers complaining when they get their online order in 2
business days as they are used to getting their order is 1 business day

and then i get to listen to kleb and luther talk about how it takes
them six weeks to get parts that don't even fit when everyone else
gets them in 1 or 2 days and they fit fine.

you two are just hapless and hopeless morons

The offset is the same. Don't know about the width.

But if you put none-steel wheels on, make sure you get the
longer lug bolts.

Or if going the other way, use _only_ the
short-for-steel-wheel bolts on the steel wheel and NOT the
longer for-alloy wheels.

speaking of parts prices!! Blew a hose on the old benz the other day, so
have it parked. Looking over the hoses, a few of them needed attention on
close examination. Called the dealer, where I get most parts. Upper rad
hose, $124!!! Huh ?? Oh yeah, has to be ordered from Germany too. Umm, ok.
Looked up Rusty's site. I'll be in contact tomorrow or really next week.
Geez, even with exchange, tax, duty (whatever happened to all this free
trade stuff between Canada and the US?) and taxes, still worth calling Rusty
on this one. Might as well change several of them while in there. If one
went, the others are probably not far behind.

Re: [MBZ] Hydraulic leak, 300TD suspension

2009-05-21 Thread Fmiser
I Found the leak!

It's the high pressure hose where it passes by the thermostat
housing - but not at the support, out in mid-air on the
underside. So it seems it's probably coincidence that the leak
showed up after pressure washing.

I thoroughly cleaned the oil off, jacked up the back of the car,
put 200+ lbs (100 kg) in the back and started it up.

For those not familiar with high pressure hydraulics, leaks can
be physically dangerous. I was wearing safety glasses and thick
leather gloves. I did _NOT_ reach around the hose while there
was pressure on the system. A pinhole leak in a high pressure
line can act like a very sharp knife and cut a finger off.

The normal flow through the filter stopped, and when I reved the
engine I saw oil by the thermostat. I shut the engine off and
looked closer. And there it was.

Tom at BuyMB said Mercedes part. About $150.

I'm thinking I'll try a local hydraulic shop.

Anyone know how bad it would be to drive the car without oil in
the system?

speaking of parts prices!!
Geez, even with exchange, tax, duty (whatever happened to all this free
trade stuff between Canada and the US?) and taxes, still worth calling

on this one. Might as well change several of them while in there. If one

He pays and so he should. My attitude is that if you do, let's say, ten
grand in damage to my property, you are responsible for that amount. I think
it's just swell that you have paid a company to cover your financial
responsibilties up to a certain amount, but that has no effect on me because
you are
still responsible for the amount to make me whole again.

I would be going after you in court for the full amount and you can deal

At an MBCA event at Phil Smart MB in Seattle last Saturday, Smart himself
(age 87) gave his usual speech, adding comments about the auto business and
it's present problems but he also revealed what the cost was just to keep the
doors open in 2008.

One million dollars per month.

And yes, they do not sell parts at the MBUSA suggested retail prices. So, I
have purchased some expensive items in the past from a California dealer at
discounted prices that they offer to MBCA members.

[MBZ] NO/LOW OIL PRESSURE UPDATE

2009-05-21 Thread Dan Weeks
Today I removed the dash cluster and removed and cleaned all the
grounds and replaced the cluster. Found the OP sensor on the filter
housing, cleaned the connection. Started the car, and still have the
same gauge behavior: gauge pegs as usual on startup, stays there for a
few seconds, then starts to drop, eventually hitting 0.

I can't find a mechanical OP test gauge anywhere in town. Guess I need
to order the one from Harbor Freight, or just order the sensor from
rusty and try replacing it.

While I had the dash out, I jumpered my dash light rheostat as someone
on the list suggested, and now my dash lights work, so that's
something...

Thanks again for the advice, all.

than the on screen map. When got to the last turn before the motel, the
voice and the arrow at the upper left corner said to turn right, but the big
arrow in the middle of the map pointed left. Best to listen, not watch.
Several of the resturaunts in the points of interest were no longer there,
one is now a bank. Guess I need to update the list somehow. There was no USB
to computer cord with it. I'll have to find one from one of the cameras -
later.

[MBZ] Diagnosing strange noise at highway speed

2009-05-21 Thread andrew strasfogel
My 1983 W123 300TD wagon makes a strange whooshing noise starting at around
45 mph. Sot of like WHUH, WHUH, WHUH. The noise is irregular/eccentric
in cadence, does not change in pitch regardless of road speed, and
disappears when the speed drops down below 42 mph. This is NOT a grinding
noise (wheel bearings) and does not alter in pitch when i turn the car one
direction or another. Bearings were replaced recently. There is no
shaking, which might indicate a tire out of round/balance. Could this
moaning be coming from the engine or transmission? If so, what might cause
it? Anyone else experience had this kind of noise? Definitely is coming
from the front of the car.
