Well the stop lever is limited in travel by the valve cover, the shutoff
is internal to the engine. I suppose I could unhook the linkage and see
what happens. I also wonder if it is because of the amount of fuel I am
delivering.

related?

Need you ask? If you can't push the stop lever and have the car stop,
neither can the shutoff diaphragm.

[MBZ] 1994 S320

2009-06-11 Thread Bill R
After the Compass / CVR / Rav4 /Subaru looking one of the folks my wife
works with just listed a 1994 S320 for $5,500, but 'will make me a good deal
on it'. It is a third car and is not being driven. From the total mileage
it has been driven less than 10k per year over its life. He had the
transmission redone last year - and [unfortunately] put on new 20 tires
and custom rims. He says the paint and interior are perfect and everything
works. He also claims to be able to get as high as 28 MPG highway with an
easy foot on the pedal, but does say when you put your foot in it, it does
not get good mileage.

I suspect the rims will probably turn us off, but if the rest of the car is
not too scary we might pay to have an evaluation done. I can't recall if
this is one of the ones with wiring harness problems, and I know that this
model has a history of evaporator problems and I think oil leaks from the
head.

What other thoughts about the good and bad do you have about this car?

Thanks - BillR

Everyone needs to drive a W140 at some point in their life.
You will only get close to 28mpg going down hill - but that won't
matter after your have been driving it for a while.

Re: [MBZ] 1994 S320

2009-06-11 Thread E M
I've always loved the cars, and even looked a couple a few months back.
Wheels aren't at big deal as I'm sure there are lots of original ones around
for not a lot of money. I see original rims on Craig's list all the time.
I'm not 100%, but I think the wiring issues were '92-'95, but I'd double
check that. Many say the car struggles with the 6 cylinder, and the 8 gives
a lot more grunt for not a lot of extra fuel. The car is more at home on
the highway, than climbing mountain passes.

Not a cheap car to run when things go wrong, but considering it was probably
one of the best cars made, it was never intended to be run on a budget. If
I could find a really good one, with all papers showing it had been loved
over the years, I'd take it.

Also, when I opened the LR door this AM rain water that was trapped spilled

Re: [MBZ] W123 Door full of water

2009-06-11 Thread Rich Thomas
I am guessing (without actually examining the patient) that a door seal
is not, and water is getting in behind and running down the door to be
trapped below. Water can be funny, capillary action can actually draw
it uphill a bit (contravening my previous statement about water flowing
downhill, though that is its preferred mode of travel). First thing I
would do is take some paper or something, see if you can slide it in
between seals and frame easily, that will show a gap where water can
migrate. Do you see wetness anywhere else on the door frame/seal above
where the water is? Next thing is to look at the door window seals, it
might still be getting in around there somehow, but how it is getting
down inside is a mystery, unless... I would also look more closely at
the door inside drains, make sure you have them open (and they should be
there, small, but there).

The only other thing I can think of is water getting in the vent holes
back behind the rear side glass, where the gutters are, and somehow
getting down near the doors, or maybe the side back window seals near
the door, running in there somehow. You could do some spot testing with
a hose once everything dries out, just direct a stream of water here and
there, see if it results in the result you are seeing.

[MBZ] OT: Rental car this week

2009-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond
So this week I'm back in southern California. I flew in late on Monday thinking
I would get a better rental car, WRONG! I've got a PT Cruiser.

Actually if I'm honest I'll admit that its not anywhere near as crappy a car as
I thought it'd be. Its UGLY sure, and the headrests are about the most
uncomfortable I've ever seen...
The floor mounted shifter is kinda cool, the gauges are mostly obscured by the
steering wheel and the radio controls are annoying although it does have an aux
jack...

I'll tell you what though, I've been thrashing the crap out of the thing, every
freeway onramp I've taken has been at full throttle and the thing that
surprises me is that there isn't the torque steer I'd expect from such a
reasonably powerful small car...

I wouldn't buy one but its not all that bad a car.

Because the drains don't appear to be there does not mean they are
not supposed to be there. They could be plugged up with bondo, or
rustproofing or some other combination of gunk. The bottom of the
door WAS built with drain holes. Door rust generally starts around the drains.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Rental car this week

2009-06-11 Thread Rich Thomas
I had one of those a year or two ago in BNA, and even though I have a
fairly skinny butt the seats felt like I was sitting in a 5 gal bucket.
I can't imagine a fatass sitting in one, though I guess the padding
would help. I thought it was buzzy and noisy, and the radio was not
particularly intuitive (whatever happened to a tuning knob and a volume
knob and a few buttons to push/hold to set for the stations?). Once I
figured it out it sorta made sense in a Chinglish kind of way. The
first one I got from the rental place (just a few thou miles on it), I
got about 100 ft and the RF half shaft/CV was clunking and screeching,
so I went back and got another one. (CV joint, whussat? Uh, that
means the wheel might break or fall off if I hit a good bump.) When I
got back a couple days later they still had that first one on the rental
lot. But you are right it was a reasonable mover and easy on gas.

Make sure you have some wrenches readily available to make sure the engine

I also wonder if it is because of the amount of fuel I am delivering.

If you have monkeyed with the injection pump, all bets are off.

You'd probably be better off with 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck than 15w50.

There's a good chance that your oil burning is caused by stuck rings. I
would try to run it hard as often as possible, and keep running Mobil 1
(hopefully 5w40). The carbon could clean out, and your compression return.

If your crankcase breather is clogged, it can also cause the blowby
gases to force out past the oil seals, and make the engine blow oil out
on the ground. This could be the cause of your oil loss, and the blue
smoke could be an injection system issue.

I suppose it is possible for the engine to be just worn out also, with
300k miles!

I don't see any any drain holes inside the RF door. The bottom inside of
the door cavity appears solid.

Also, when I opened the LR door this AM rain water that was trapped
spilled

out but from the rear edge, and there was no sloshing behind the door
panel. Can you explain this?

I think most of the electrical harness issues were with the 94 to 96 gas cars.?
This I understand will go bad if it has not already been replaced.? I had a 94
e320 and it had the harness replaced.? I also had a 94 c280 and it had not had
the harness replaced but had the check engine lite on most of the year that I
owned.? It was never a significant problem, but it only had about 120k miles on
it.? I understand that as they get older the isulation on the harness gets more
brittle, shorts more and more and deteriorates after that.? I understand also
that the actuator switch for the accelerator can go bad also.? When I bought
mine, I took it to the local MB dealer and that is how I found out both the
accellerator switch and harness had been replaced on my e320.? my 2 cents, hope
is helpful

I'm not 100%, but I think the wiring issues were '92-'95, but I'd double
check that. Many say the car struggles with the 6 cylinder, and the 8 gives
a lot more grunt for not a lot of extra fuel. The car is more at home on
the highway, than climbing mountain passes.

Not a cheap car to run when things go wrong, but considering it was probably
one of the best cars made, it was never intended to be run on a budget. If

Re: [MBZ] 1994 S320

2009-06-11 Thread dave walton
I was waay off on the price for that 300TD. The seller never responded
to my questions - which kept me from bidding.

I replaced the glow plug and engine wiring harness on my 94 S350
shortly after I got it (2001?). The insulation was cracking and
exposed bare copper. They must have used the same source for both
diesel and gas vehicles. Had to replace the kickdown switch in 2005 or
so, but the normal position of the accelerator is firmly against the
floor so that was no surprise.

A good 140 is a fabulous car, though a '94 is not quite the best of the
bunch. I assume at this point the evaporator and head gasket have been
done at least once, but check the records. Also, check the harness.
They fare a little better in an S320, with that small engine in a big
bay, but they all crumble in the end.

There's not much love for the six-pot 140, but they get along just fine
and you won't miss a bigger engine in Florida, although you will miss
28mpg as there's just no way. A good deal if he still has the original
wheels and it truly is in top notch condition. But a '98 or '99 is
still a better car.
